"Lower Marlboro is a small, unincorporated community in Calvert County, Maryland. It's located on the east bank of the Patuxent River at the intersection of MD 262 and Chaneyville Road. Lower Marlboro is one of the oldest towns in Maryland and was originally called Coxtown. The town was a port of entry in 1683 and became a Colonial settlement in the 1600s. The earliest surviving buildings date from the 1700s.
Lower Marlboro was once a bustling port, especially in the 19th century. Ships would stop at the town to drop off or pick up supplies, particularly tobacco. The town's steamboat wharf was created in 1706 and was an important mode of transportation for local residents, farms, and businesses. The last steamship came to Lower Marlboro in 1938.
Lower Marlboro is a historic district. The town played a role during the War of 1812." -Bard AI
