About Pollyanna Butterfield
Christian and I bought Casa Andorinha as a ruin in 2005, we then spent the next 6 years renovating the property ourselves which was a lot of hard work but enjoyable. While we were working our two teenage daughters Lily and Maya went to school llocally in Alcoutim village. At the end of the day we all went home by boat to our land on the banks of the Guadiana 1km down river from Alcouitm on the Spanish side. There we live surrounded by our animals and garden. In our previous life Christian was a school teacher, specialising in French, German and Spanish. In his holidays he loved to sail which is how we came here in 1997 by boat and never left! I grew up in England studied Architecture at University but soon realised that working in an office was not for me and that working outdoors with my hands was how I wanted to live my life. So re-building Casa Andorinha was a great way of combining work, my interest in old building and being a Mum! Now that the work is done we are both enjoying taking things a bit easier and having the chance to be more sociable and meeting new people.

Excellent home from home in an unbeatable location.
The house exceeded our expectations. Spacious. Equipped for any requirement. Sympathetically restored, retaining the best of the traditional, with modern comforts.Lots of space, inside and out,to accommodate larger groups in comfort. Nothing to fault! Alcotim is petite. Charming.Easy on the feet and eye. And excellent long walking trails nearby.
Super house in quiet village
Super house with all you need. Splendid view from the balcony to the river and the spanish village cross the river.
Beautiful house,beautiful location
We spent 10 wonderful weeks from January to the end of March in this beautiful house, missing it very much.It has everything you could possibly want and overlooks the Guadiana River.Stunning views down the river from the top terrace.Lots of restaurants to choose from, one O'Seiro's does a fish barbecue on Tuesday's,very popular which overlooks the river. The beach cafe was another favourite. The house has 3 good sized bedrooms and a very large kitchen,a wood burner in the kitchen and the lounge, which wasn't used towards the end of our stay,as it was so warm. You couldn't wish for better hosts in Polly and Christian and the lovely new addition Django to their family. They are on hand by phone for any help.Lots to see around the area and walks.
There was a walking festival while we were there and went on the one walking with a goat herd in nearby C. da Seda.
Thankyou Polly and Christian for sharing your lovely house,if we get the chance we would love to come back.
Thank you John and Jenny for being great guests and the gushing review! We hope to see you all again sometime soon.

Characterful property with excellent views
We stayed for a week in this lovely property, but wished it could have been longer! We really liked the patio and terrace areas with the views of the river, castles and surrounding areas. Despite being located in a small town, we found the property to be nice and quiet. We had a super time and did not want to leave!
Chilled village with a relaxed vibe
Relaxing week away from the over crowded tourist spots
Fantastic spacious property in a great location.
My wife, two grown up kids and I loved the house. Stayed 11 nights. Plenty of space inside and great outside terraces overlooking the river. Perfect for chilling out and catching some sun. The house was spotlessly clean, comfortable and very well equipped. The town is relaxed with a good selection of bars and restaurants and it's not overrun by tourists, which is always a bonus. The prices were always very reasonable. The river beach area and bar, 5 minutes walk away, was fab and great for a swim on those very hot days. Minas de Sao Domingos has a fantastic fresh water beach too that's well worth a visit. Thanks for the tip Christian. Visited several towns in the area, Altura, Mertola, Castro Marim, took in some historical sights, as well as Alcoutim castle and always found the people to be very helpful and friendly. The Algarve coast beaches were superb and only about half an hour away by car. The little ferry from Alcoutim across to Spain is a great inexpensive service. Used it a few times to visit Sanlucar for walks or a bite to eat. Also, it was fun to have a go on the zipline just for the hell of it! All in all the house, the area and the weather of course were fantastic and we would certainly return. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the property to anyone. Polly and Christian, the owners, are lovely people and very helpful. If you are looking for a lovely property in a nice little town, you can't go wrong. We really didn't want to leave!
