About this property

San Antonio Carriage House: Hill country view, horses and live music

San Antonio Carriage House sits off the road on seven acres in the Texas hill country. The 1929 limestone cottage is a reclaimed barn with the original sliding doors affixed to the outside. Inside the spacious open area, you'll find an exposed limestone wall and concrete floors. The round window in the front has a unique architectural design of cut limestone. The seating area features a unique niche in the wall that looks like a fireplace mantel. The oversized bathroom/dressing room features a glass, walk-in shower with a rainfall shower head and a towel warmer. Every window in the cottage has a woodland view of trees, wildlife or horses. The front porch, with comfortable chairs, is a great spot for greeting the morning with a cup of coffee and pastries. Around the back of the Carriage House is a place to sit with a glass of tea or wine and enjoy the hill country views. Down by the old rock wall there is a fire pit so you can roast marshmallows or make s'mores. You can say hello to our concierge ponies, Jack and Starbuck, and perhaps offer them a piece of apple through the fence.

Local-flavor restaurants include El Chaparral, Grey Moss Inn and La Hacienda. There are food trucks and live music just a mile down the road at Dino's & Gino's Liquors.

Check out our other accommodation at the ranch, the Country Cottage (sleeps six) at
vrbo #373236.

If your trip takes you downtown, you'll be interested in our Alamo Heights CRAFTSMAN HAUS. Find more information at
homeaway #3581698. This charming 100-year-old home built by my great-grandparents features a wide front porch for lounging in the cool breezes, sipping lemonade and enjoying conversation. Step through the 100-year-old door into the living room with original hardwood floors and working fireplace. Curl up in a chair next to the fireplace for a cozy hour of reading. Or lounge on the leather sofa to watch TV. Further in the house, the gracious dining room has a table for four. You'll fall in love with the built-in china cabinet and the floor-to-ceiling windows that let in natural light. The Vienna bedroom has a sophisticated air with a mirrored dressing table and period accents. Open the closet door to reveal a full-length mirror. The Bavarian Room has a chic European feel with elegant touches. Both rooms have queen beds and luxurious sheets. The bathroom has a granite-like countertop and a vessel sink. The original hardwood floors in the kitchen have just recently been rediscovered! What a warm feeling to wake up to the smell of coffee and step into this kitchen with old world butcher block countertops and a bright view over the sink. A granite peninsula adds even more counter space. Coffee maker, toaster, microwave, wine rack and other modern conveniences are provided. The large backyard is furnished with outdoor seating so you can relax under the palm tree with the beverage of your choice after a busy day downtown.

Within walking distance: Starbucks, Local Coffee, BIRD Bakery, Broadway Daily Bread, Central Market grocery store and more. Restaurants include Cappy's, Cappyccino's, Mon Thai Bistro & Sushi, Paloma Blanca Mexican Cuisine, Lion & Rose British Pub.

Linda is a very gracious host and she lent me her large Craftsman Haus in Alamo Heights, San Antonio, when the Carriage house occupant wanted to stay longer. The Craftsman Haus is a great history and architectural experience (but with a modern, really well equipped, designer kitchen). It was built in 1910, and it is interesting to drive around the lovely neighborhood and reflect how this Haus survived through the world wars and two world pandemics and still remain among all the newly built surrounding homes, shops and restaurants. The Haus seems to be part of the Mengercottages.com, if it cannot be found on Expedia or Vrbo.

2022 Spring Trip

The property was more than either of us anticipated. Clean, quite, peaceful place to stay. Beautiful old oak trees and Farm/Ranch surroundings. Linda was warm and friendly willing to accommodate our questions and requests. Our purpose for this trip was to see wildflowers, which were few and far between due to the lack of rain in the area. The Carriage House is a definite place I've marked for a return visit in the future. MJH

Charming Hill Country

I arrived after dark and had a little trouble locating my cottage (it's dark in the country!) but once I was in, it was just so charming! I love the location because it's close to both the Hill Country, and San Antonio. My hubby opted out at the last minute, but I'm glad that I went. The horses were really sweet and it's just a great get away! I would stay here again.

Hill Country Getaway

We enjoyed our stay at this nice rustic cottage and property. Our niece liked the animals - she especially liked feeding the horses. Linda was very responsive, and it was a pleasure meeting her. We all appreciated the impromptu tour and learning about the history of the land and cottages.

Disappointed

The online description appeared to show a nice country getaway. But it’s actually next to a loud, busy highway. The cabin itself is RIGHT NEXT to a house, so privacy is limited. I guess it was the first cold spell of the season, so we turned on the wall unit, but it blew out terrible smelling air. So we turned it off. There are no trails or areas to explore except the barn. The horses were sweet. The cabin was damp and not in ship shape. For example, plastic bags were stuffed in one part of the wall (I guess for insulation, but I’m not sure). The TV was super old. We paid for two nights, but we left after the first one. If you want to visit Helotes, stay in San Antonio. Yes, hotels are generic, but at least you know what you’re getting. The proprietors were very nice and I’m sorry about this negative review. It’s probably better in the summer.

Relaxing and excellent location

We loved this property. It was in the midst of nature with horses outside our one of our windows. Location perfect. It was far enough away from the city to not be subjected to the hustle and bustle of it, but still close to the highway to get to the city if needed. The only thing is we had a hard time finding it as we didn't get in until very late and there are no street lights lighting the way to see any numbers on the mailbox. It was very clean and comfortable.

Excellent girl's road trip

My best friend and I stayed were going to Helotes to see The Mavericks in concert and needed a stress-free break from everyday life! The experience at this cabin was amazing. It was very clean and comfortable and had everything that we needed. We loved talking with other guests, feeding the horses, walking under the trees and were blessed to have some rain also. Loved sitting on the patio smelling the rain and watching the birds, horses., etc! Would definitely stay here again. Can't wait to go back with my husband the next time!

relaxing getaway

I chose this location because of proximity to Floore's Country Store (only 4 miles!), which is perfect for seeing your favorite Texas Country artist! But we got much more- relaxing country atmosphere and still easy to go visit friends and eat dinner downtown. Clean and cozy. Will be looking at the concert schedule at Floore's more often for another fun weekend in the Hill Country!

Nice place!

We were in town for our daughter's wedding and were trying to find something close to the venue that was dog friendly. We weren't sure about this place by looking at the pictures but we were pleasantly surprised when we walked in! It was very roomy and the bathroom was huge making it nice to get ready for the wedding. The only complaint was no creamer for the coffee but other than that it was great! Thanks!

Ideal in every sense

As you drive along the main road leading to this place, you see some of the local and traditional charm along the way. Old-town Helotes and Floore's Country Store, but also some restaurants worth visiting. Then, you take a quick turn to the cottages. There's a tree-lined road that leads to the charming cottage on the right, and the carriage house on the left. It's cool and quiet inside, and it's set up for familiarity and comfort. There are some really interesting books inside if you just want to chill. There's a pleasant walk outside, some nice drives. Bikes would be great. On your forays nearby, you can go see the river walk and The Alamo and some super shoppin' and galleries. You can head out to Gruene Town Hall and take a spin on the dance floor with a good band. This place is just a great location. And... the air smells good outdoors.

About the host

Hosted by Linda Klar

Host profile image
My great grandparents bought this property along with more than 500 acres so they could farm and run a dairy. Erich and Lydia Menger spent more than 30 years there. After their passing, their four children inherited the property. My grandmother, her brothers and their families continued farming but in 1973, it was decided to sell the property. As a little girl, I was devastated to lose my favorite playground. I vowed that someday I would by the ranch back. The man who bought the ranch sold off the acreage but in 2000 the seven acres that contained the original houses and sheds came on the market. With my husband's support, I WAS able to buy the ranch back! I also got the pony I'd always wanted from childhood.

Why they chose this property

We enjoy the wildlife, the history, the farm ways. We hope you enjoy the charming old rock house, the vantage points from which you can relax and see the mountains.
Our special location allows you to enjoy Old Town Helotes with cute shops, market days, bicycling and live country music. Seaworld and Fiesta Texas are just 15 miles away. La Cantera mall offers department stores and your favorite shops. UTSA and Southwest Research are close by. And you can enjoy a day at the Riverwalk downtown and the retreat from the sounds of the city to the peaceful chirping of cicadas.

Government Canyon State Natural Area is closeby.
