The Olympian Connection. William Penny Brookes was born in Much Wenlock in 1809 where his father was one of the local doctors. The family house is in Wilmore Street opposite the Parish Church. In 1831, William Penny Brookes returned to Much Wenlock to take over his father's GP practice. In 1850 Brookes formed the Wenlock Olympian Class. The first Games, held in October 1850, were a mixture of athletics and also traditional country sports such as quoits, football and cricket. These early Games sometimes included a ' fun' event; once a wheelbarrow race, another year an old woman's race for a pound of tea, these events were not usually a part of the general programme. The Wenlock Olympian Society Annual Games are still held, every July, at the Windmill Field though this area is now designated the Gaskell Recreation Ground. From the beginning some events were open to all-comers.

Lovely setting
This is our 8th stay here. It's a lovely lodge in a peaceful, rural setting with a few other lodges surrounding it. It is really well equipped, comfortable an excellent find. We originally came for the steam railway that's nearby but our son lives close by so it's convenient for visiting. Jan and Paul are great hosts, nothing to much trouble and it's always spotless.

Check before you go!
Great location with plenty of walks right from the lodge. Nice walk through nature reserve and along river into Bridgenorth. Nice set out lodge and we loved the sauna. Unfortunately a lack of, possibly, maintenance of some of the electric items let us down somewhat. The dishwasher and bedroom TV both didn’t work. There was no bread maker which we had planned to use. Unfortunately the owners chose not to share this information until we arrived. This was a shame as we would have still gone but knowing ahead would have been nice. Both the oven and microwave could have been cleaner. Care was needed on the decking as this was very slippery. We would recommend this lodge if the above issues were addressed.

Why they chose this property

Location; Location; Location.
Shropshire is an undiscovered and beautiful County and provides a great opportunity to get away from the worries of the world. Shropshire has only one Motorway, lots of open countryside; villages; pubs; and super welcoming people.

The county of Shropshire covers a large area of 1235 square miles (319,736 hectares) and is situated in the West Midlands. The population density is 98 per square km.. compare that to the to the UK average of 273 per sq km and the 9 London boroughs with over 10,000 people per square km and you see how rural and peaceful Shropshire actually is.

Results from the 2011 Census show that there are only 306,100 people living in Shropshire compared to the UK population of 66,299,350 covering 242,495 km²
