Excellent house and property to host large groups with

We very much enjoyed out stay in the Hudson Valley at the Carriage House. It easily hosted a dozen adults and served as an excellent place to host an alumni reunion event. We would absolutely consider renting here again and recommend to others!

Extremely nice, clean and comfy house

We had a party of 12 and found this last minute house for our hunter ski trip at the president weekend, it's approximate 45 minute away from hunter. Although is a little far away from hunter, but the house is absolutely comfy and have everything we needed. The property manager, Jack, and his wife are super friendly. We definitely recommend any traveler who want to come over for skiing and even coming for the spring/summer time.

Charming Hudson Valley

This old carriage house sits down a gravel road on a large property that overlooks the Hudson. The house is rural and historic, with obvious signs of its prior existence as a carriage house. But it is well equipped and has numerous comfortable sleeping spots, well suited to our extended family of 11 converging on the Valley from several directions. Even with the charming hamlets of Germantown and Tivoli a few minutes away, we ate most of our meals in the dining room, cooking on the outdoor grill and indoor kitchen. After very easy arrangements--prompt and polite exchanges with the owner, we had an unforgettable weekend together at this great rental.

This is a beautiful property , close to the Hudson River, set in the woods.

We loved our stay at Northwoods. The converted carriage house has been beautifully done: fresh, new bathrooms, a fresh new kitchen, and all the modern conveniences. We stayed during a heat wave and the air conditioning was most welcome. The homeowner was most accommodating, making sure we had all that we needed. We would definitely stay at Northwoods again. Our favorite moments were walking down the hill to see the sunset over the Hudson River. I would say the only thing missing is a set of Adirondack chairs to sit in while we enjoyed the view! The Carriage House had a lovely yard too, complete with a wonderful deck with comfortable chairs. The house is very close to Rhinebeck, Germantown and Olana. Ripley, thank you for a wonderful stay at a magical place!

Fabulous escape to enjoy the beauty of the Hudson Valley, filled with history and nature and

We love vintage homes and the location of this property is stunning. The converted barn is spacious and has lots to offer for a family. You can stay in or go out to nearby towns like Hudson, Rhinebeck and Kingston. Eating out just needs to be planned as some places are not open every day of the week. There are nature trails, vineyards and farms to enjoy. The owner is warm and open to ideas - she was super responsive. Thanks, it was the shot in the arm we all needed :)

Fun Family Reunion

A terrific place for a family reunion. It's also known for memorable weddings. We had a wonderful time at this beautiful location. The scenery is spectacular; if you have never been to the Hudson River you are in for a treat. The house easily accommodates 12 people. The kitchen is very well outfitted with pots and pans, utensils, glassware and plates, dishwasher detergent. In fact, the entire house is well appointed - plenty of towels, soap, bath gel, hair dryer. The owner and the manager could not do enough to make us comfortable. It is easy to have a spectacular time in this comfortable home and its scenic surroundings.

A country overnight

We had planned a trip to Vermont from Maryland and wanted to break up the long drive to make it easier. As a treat to ourselves we wanted to stay in a country house or B and B rather than just a hotel. I am so glad we did! We arrived at the main gate and buzzed ourselves in (our hostess had provided us the key code earlier). We drove down the gravel wooded drive to the cottage not knowing exactly what to expect. We let ourselves in and found a very spacious open plan downstairs with a fully furnished kitchen and a fireplace all set up to use if needed. Beautiful hardwood floors! A very quiet country feel. We felt right at home from the beginning. A bit later we took a short drive to Tivoli to get a very nice meal. The second floor had an open loft area with bookshelves for reading and relaxing. The bed was very comfortable and we slept great! The bathroom was lovely and big. Our hostess had provided us with really nice towels. Everything was immaculate! We loved the peace and quiet and felt very relaxed. The next morning we took a stroll around the property through the woods and fields and even saw some turkeys. The view of the Hudson River and the Catskills beyond is gorgeous. Our only regret was having to leave so soon to continue our trip to Vermont, but we will definitely be back again! Can’t wait!! Wow great place! We absolutely loved it!

Couldn't have picked a better place to host us for our Wedding Weekend

We stayed at the Carriage House for our wedding weekend with our wedding party, and it was a fabulous choice- it slept 12 people comfortably and it had more than enough space (and glassware) for all our needs. The space was large enough to allow both the groom and bridal party to get ready at the same venue, while providing adequate privacy and enough bathrooms/mirrors etc. The design of the house is also amazingly beautiful with exposed wood, and skylights that flood the bedrooms with light. The owners were lovely and absolutely on top of all of the little details, down to getting us distilled water for the iron and making sure we had local goat's milk soap in the bathrooms

Special Hudson Valley

The converted carriage house had everything we were looking for: character, a beautiful location, spacious accommodations for our family of six adults and three children, and easy access to many family-friendly activities. Over the long Columbus Day weekend, we picked apples locally, took the spectacular Walkway Across the Hudson and went as far afield as the Storm King Art Center. The owner greeted us when we arrived, showed us around and responded to questions/needs promptly. This was a wonderful place for a special family weekend.

Hudson Valley Splendor

I lived in this refurbished carriage house for a year. Everything works well and the property --the house and the extensive grounds --is well-tended by a brilliant manager. The house is spacious enough to have overnight guests in total comfort. In the summer the place is heavenly and when the trees thin out there is a wonderful river view. The land is very well taken care of and perfect for long (or short!) walks. The owners are fair and cooperative and I was quite sad to leave when my lease was up and my own house was ready to be reoccupied.

Excellent stay

Hi - we had a great stay - the house is very nicely decorated and really brings in the barn feel with a modern twist. The house is on a huge property that is quiet and secluded - we roamed the grounds and danced in the barn adjacent to the house. The sellers were very hospitable and made it possible to come up late Thursday night. They are close to town and all the amazing towns of the Hudson Valley

Fall at the Carriage House

I recently got married on the same beautiful property as the Historic Hudson River Estate Carriage House. My husband stayed in the carriage house with his groomsman and their respective girlfriends/wives the night before our wedding. I joined them the night of the wedding, and we stayed an additional night on the property alone. Guests enter the property from a small tree covered country road that winds through the Hudson Valley landscape- including numerous farms and historic estates. Past the entrance gate is a long gravel driveway surrounded by forest on either side- it is a serene and park-like, and in fall the colors of the canopy of branches over the driveway is striking. The carriage house is modest in its external appearance, but is well appointed, charming and spotlessly clean inside. The owner has kept the structure's original details but modernized some aspects including the kitchen, bathrooms, etc, which make it very comfortable for guests, even large groups such as our wedding party. The kitchen is equipped with all the conveniences of home- even with some pantry items that rental homes don't normally provide (aluminum foil, plastic wrap, coffee). There was a grill on the back porch, which overlooks another historic structure and the forest. Adjacent to the kitchen was a laundry room with a brand new washer and drier (and soap!) which was a wonderful amenity! The second level of the house is extremely large and the historic details including the original wood floors and rafters make it such a lovely space to relax in. There is a small living room set up on the second floor with a new (pullout) couch and chair and TV. There are four bedrooms on the second floor as well, each with its own bathroom, which was so convenient for our wedding party! The rooms were comfortable and spacious (two are smaller and two larger rooms including the master) and equipped with new bedding and towels & toiletries for our guests. The master suite was just wonderful- it is enormous, with multiple windows and skylights, a large comfortable bed, and a beautiful bathroom. It is clear from the renovation that the owner thought hard about what would be convenient and comfortable for their guests. The owner and property manager was extremely accommodating and a pleasure to deal with. Overall, the property is quite picturesque, quiet, and peaceful and is located near by so many wonderful Hudson Valley sites. My husband & I will definitely be back soon!

August vacation at Northwood Carriage House

My husband and son and I spent the last couple of weeks in a very comfortable and delightful space at Northwood Carriage House. It was like being in an Adirondack camp, which brought me back to my childhood. The bedrooms were especially nice and unlike other rentals, the linens were tasteful, crisp and clean. The photos were accurate and the property is well cared for and the owner easy to communicate with. The towns of Rhinebeck and Hudson are equidistant and only 20 minutes away, not to mention the charming town of Germantown with a great gourmet grocery and lunch spot. I would definitely recommend this property to friends and family and I would go back in a heart beat.

Just delightful!

I stayed at the Carriage House the weekend before my wedding - which took place on the property. The owner went through great efforts to make sure all every guest's needs were attended to. The rooms were clean and cozy, the atmosphere was tranquil, and everyone felt at home. The skylight in the master bedroom was one of my favorite parts of the Carriage House, although this feature may prove to be annoying if you are trying to sleep-in past sunrise. The kitchen had all the necessary accoutrements to cook meals and there was even a grill on the patio outside. The grounds lead to a breathtaking, picturesque view of the Hudson River. This place is a hidden gem for anyone who loves being surrounded by nature and traveling off the beaten path.

Great Carriage House & Easy commute to Omega Institute

I recently spent 5 nights at this carriage house while I commuted daily to the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY. It was heaven! After a day of inquiry and education at Omega, I could retreat to this lovely, updated house to relax and unwind. Comfy beds, great kitchen, big TV (!), all in the tranquility of a magnificent private estate on the Hudson. The owner was most accommodating and gracious. It was a very pretty and easy drive to Omega that took me through the beautiful countryside with very little traffic. I highly recommend this house; in fact I plan to book it when I return to Omega for a retreat with several friends next June.

fabulous vacation spot

I spent a lovely week in this very special house in August. It truly has all the touches that make it feel like home. The bedrooms are comfortable with quality linens and fabulous bathrooms. The outside porch areas are a perfect addition to the beautiful and very secluded grounds. I highly recommend this house - perfect for children as well.

About the host

Hosted by Ripley Hathaway

Host profile image
I am a landscape architect who grew up on this property. I live just down the hill from the Carriage House and have spent most of my life along the Hudson River. I will be happy to pass along local knowledge about the valley, and to steer you to the best farms and farmstands, restaurants and movie theaters (including a drive-in), and any other activities you may wish to pursue.

Why they chose this property

This property has remained essentially unchanged since the mid- nineteenth century, when it was first developed by Robert Livingston. When you come here you can relax and experience nature as he experienced it, except now within the comforts of a modern home.

If you are a bird watcher, you will thrill to see our resident pair of bald eagles, or our flocks of wild turkeys. Other birds that are often seen include great blue herons, hummingbirds, pileated woodpeckers, and red-tailed hawks. Bring your binos and head to our promenade overlooking the hudson where you can sit on the benches we have there and watch eagles go by at eye level. No eagles the constant boat traffic is fun too.

We keep miles of paths cleared for hikes throughout the property. Pick up a picnic lunch at the renowned Ottos Market in Germantown and some local wine at Lawlors across the street and have a picnic at the Cheviot town dock where there are picnic tables and a grill. Ottos carries local beers too.

Want to go off property the local vineyards, breweries and distilleries have tasting rooms open on the weekends.

What makes this property unique

Your accomodations are down a gated, half-mile, private road which is accessible only to you and the owner. Outside there is comfortable deck furniture and Adirondack chairs, on which to finish that book you have been meaning to read, or to just relax.
Should the weather keep you inside, there is wi-fi and a flat screen TV, along with more old-fashioned pursuits like board games and books. Air-conditioned for the summer, and with a wood-burning fireplace for the autumn and winter (aged firewood is provided), there is really no "off season" here.
If you are attending a wedding in the area, this is a great base and is ideal for sharing. Our full-time property manager is always on-call, should any problem arise.
