Welcome to Sugar River Retreat, a 50-acre haven near the Driftless Area, offering an idyllic blend of adventure and relaxation. Explore the pure waters of Norwegian Creek by kayak, passing under a historic covered bridge adjacent to the property. Fish from the dock on a private lake or hike trails that weave through this protected nature preserve. This secluded escape offers a rare connection to nature’s beauty in Southern Wisconsin’s breathtaking outdoors.

A $100/fee/dog applies. This is a mandatory fee. To help maintain a safe and welcoming environment for all, we require every guest to submit pet or assistance animal information through BetterPet Passport (powered by PetScreening). Guests will simply submit “household pet” information, request an accommodation for an assistance animal, or confirm they are not bringing a pet / animal.
It’s free, and only requires creating an account if you’re bringing a pet or animal. After booking, you’ll receive a link to complete the process. Thanks for your cooperation!
✅ This property has special local compliance requirements which include a signed rental agreement, ID verification, and a security hold of $1500 (which is not a traditional security deposit, just a pending transaction). As an optional alternative to the security hold, you may opt in to purchase a non-refundable damage waiver provided by a third-party insurance company. The optional damage waiver is $49 for stays up to 10 nights, with an additional $2 per day for stays longer than 10 nights. Damage waiver purchases are optional.
To make this process easy for you, we use a secure and very simple, app-free platform called Happy Guest. It is not an app, and you do not have to sign up for an account - it’s a safe and secure website. It also gives you a guest portal with all the info about the home and all of my favorite local spots.

What makes this property unique
Guests should note that at certain times of the year when the creek floods the access bridge into the property may be under water. In these situations we do have secondary ingress, and provide a phone number to call if you encounter high water around the bridge around check-in and in the guest book.
Travel insurance is available after booking and highly recommended for stays during the spring and winter months where your travel may be affected by seasonal weather.
The fireplace in the basement is not usable. The fireplace upstairs is usable.
A $500 hold is collected prior to your arrival at the property. This is similar to what hotels do when they collect a card at check in for incidentals and is not a deposit. It is released 5 days after check out according to the terms of the rental agreement.
LAWNCARE: The lawn is mowed on Tuesdays or Wednesdays weather permitting. We will contact you if it is scheduled for another day due to inclement weather or scheduling conflicts.
CAMERAS: We have cameras on the premises. Doorbell cameras are located at the front doors and monitor the entry and the driveway, and there are others monitoring the back door. Cameras are motion activated and record audio and video and are monitored infrequently (typically at time of check-in to make sure you made it in and after check-out, though we reserve the right to check more frequently if we receive notice of rule violations) Your reservation will be terminated immediately if you disable, unplug, tamper with, cover, block or alter the WIFI equipment or security equipment (cameras).
