About Carolyn Potter
I was born and grew up in Dublin and left home to get a job in the UK in the early 1980's when I was in my 20's. I now live in the UK but bought this apartment in Dublin many years ago after the death of my Mum, so that I have a place for my family and myself to visit, so that I get to keep my accent and my children get to know a bit about their roots!
Carolyn Potter purchased this Apartment in 1999
Why Carolyn Potter chose City Centre Dublin
I bought this property because it is right in the very centre of things in the city centre. It is on the northside (only just north of the river!), and because I am a Northsider I was attracted to it, Everywhere you would want to visit is walkable from the front door. Also this particular apartment, although it was just one bedroom, was significantly more spacious than most that I looked at and it was also in a nice well maintained block. It fitted the bill for holidays or short break in Ireland. We refurbished the property a couple of years ago, and completely refurnished it, and it now offers everything you would want in a home from home setting. We also installed WIFI, and cable TV so there is a full range of entertainment options available. There is a small DVD library there too.
What makes this Apartment unique
The main benefit of this property is it's location. Although it is right in the heart of the city it is not on a main traffic route. It is situated on a little used stretch of a one way system, so there is very little street noise. The apartment is on the third floor and in all my visits there I have never heard any noise coming from the neighbouring apartments. It feels a very comfortable and safe place to be . In this part of the city centre there are several apartment blocks and they have been well catered by foodstores. There are several major supermarkets withing a couple of minutes walk and many other small convenience stores, not to mention the myriad of bars, restaurants and other venues right on your doorstep. I am often asked if the apartment is safe. I frequently travel there by myself and walk back to the apartment late at night. As I woman alone I feel very safe there. There are several layers of security between the front door and the street, and the streets themselves are quiet, but busy enough to feel safe walking down alone late in the evening. Obviously, this is a city centre, and I am relating my own experience. I can't guarantee that you would never encounter problems, I am just saying that I never have.

Dont stay here
There are only a few good things to say so Ill start there. The location is walkable to stores and food as well as 15 minutes into the city center. The couch folds out to a big sized bed. Those are the best points. There were people regularly smoking crack and shooting up heroin on the side of your hotel. Not a good neighborhood. The water pressure in the shower is almost non-existent. Also, limited hot water. The place is in a building that smelled like mildew everywhere. The building is a large apartment complex that is noisy with people coming and going at all hours, slamming doors and yelling. Plus the drunks and drug addicts in the alley below yelling all night. There was only one set of keys so you cant have 2 different agendas or someone cant get back in the apartment. You also were required to clean the apartment or threatened a fine. Not convenient when we had to catch a plane at 5:30 am so we didn't sleep because we were having to wash towels and clean. The previous people left an empty box of cereal and an empty jar of coffee and other empty grocery products and spoiled condiments so we had to take out trash right as soon as we arrived. The towels smelled like mildew as well. The bed was hard as a rock and the pillows were as flat as the blanket. Overall, I would not recommend this property. Loved the city, hated this property. No wonder they wouldn't give the address until right before check in. I usually have great luck with VRBO, this one falls very short.
Well to be honest, your opinions are very much in the minority and so many of the things you say are just incorrect.
Firstly, nobody asked you to wash your sheets or bedlinen before you left. We ask you to leave the apartment in a clean condition, i.e, clean up your mess and remove your trash, but not wash your linens. Regarding 'spoiled condiments' it is only your opinion that they were 'spoiled' just because they had been left by previous guests. Most of our guests are very happy not to have to purchase a whole packet of salt or a full bottle of cooking oil for a relatively short stay, and are happy to use some condiments that have been left by either myself or earlier guests in the knowledge that they have a long shelf life.
Secondly, you were offered a second set of keys and apparently declined them.
Thirdly, the apartment was checked after these comments and there is no musty smell anywhere. Sometimes you may notice cooking smells ( but definitely not mildew!!!) from other apartments in the corridors outside the apartment . That is outside our apartment and obviously not under our control, but they do not intrude into the apartment and is normal in all apartment buildings.
Fourthly, the mattress is firm. Most people prefer a firm mattress and it is perfectly comfortable.
Regarding the people outside? Obviously this is not under our control. This is quite a good area of the city, but it is a city centre and sometimes undesirable things happen even in the best areas. I have personally never seen this happen. I have seen a few old guys sitting across the road during the afternoon with a can of beer but never felt threatened by them. Also, there isn't an alley by the apartment so I don't know what he is talking about.
Finally, we are in no way hiding the location of this apartment. The location is marked exactly on the locater map on the website. Just look it up.
First European trip
The flat was a comfortable size for 2 adults and a teen. We really only needed a place to sleep and shower as we were up and out before dawn daily and not back till late every evening.
The refrigerator is dorm size not apartment size, not an issue for us but something I hadn’t realized ahead - had we not eaten out for every meal that may have been a small complication to work with. Took a bit to figure out the right setting for the washer/dryer combo so that the clothes dried and not just come out hot and wet. The shower wasn’t too difficult to figure out, the wall directions are very clear.
What we didn’t know was where the trash was, thankfully my husband ran into someone else taking theirs out and followed them. It’s in the parking garage behind a locked gate/door- which is what the 3rd key is for.
The cleaning crew had everything unplugged in the living room and figuring out what went where was confusing- my son got the router plugged in so that we had use of the WiFi but we couldn’t figure out where/how the tv plugged in- again wasn’t a problem as we simply watched shows on the laptop we’d brought.
I would definitely stay again, was in a handy location to get to the tours most of which started off by the statue of Molly Malone.
Place was clean and very secure you go through 4 locked doors till you’re inside the flat.
This was a nice place. the bathroom was a little different and the door combination pad didn't have labels so keying in the number was an adventure, but we call those items "character" and move on. If want to be close the temple bar area this is the place.
Great location, good value.
Nice place, great location and value
This is a very nice apartment in a great location. Food stores nearby (Aldi and Lidl). This place is a great value compared to other places in Dublin city centre.
This property is in an excellent location for seeing Dublin, but would not recommend it. We had a major difficulty gaining access upon arrival and had to pay an additional fee to obtain the key. To be fair the owner did reimburse us 50% of that amount although we had been promised 100% repayment.
The beds were great and clean. It was quiet and comfortable, but the shower was an issue and the closet very untidy
Unfortunately ,the guest has only given half of the story. Basically, he supplied his flight details to my representative who agreed to meet him at the apartment to show him in etc.
He says that when he arrived at the airport his bags were delayed, but my representative sat for several hours waiting for him on what was a public holiday in June.. She checked his plane had arrived but after several hours there was still no show, and no communication as to where he was. She had other commitments so reluctantly left the apartment.
When he finally appeared he managed to call her, but as she was otherwise committed she had to arrange for someone else, to go and meet him and let him in, hence an additional charge was made. It turns out he had gone off for lunch , ignoring the fact that someone was waiting for him.
I was aware of the need for the guest to gain access to the premises, but bearing in mind that he had caused the problem by going to lunch whilst someone was waiting for him to arrive, I felt that it was fair that he share half the cost.
I always treat my guests fairly and with respect . This was an entirely avoidable problem and in my opinion he was more than fairly treated.
This property is located right in the very heart of the city centre on the north side of the river Liffey. It is located in a residential block on Parnell Street, which runs parallel to Henry Street (2 minutes walk) which at one time was labelled the busiest shopping street in Europe. O' Connell Street which is normally considered the centre of the city is only 5 minutes walk from the front door.
It only 2 minutes walk to the Dominick stop of the new Tram line called the LUAS. This new line takes you straight across to St. Stephens Green. (The line opened in December 2017) This allows quick and easy access to the south city and it's amenities.
There are numerous bars, shops restaurants and attractions on the doorstep, and the world famous Temple bar is only a leisurely 12 minute walk away over the River Liffey. In addition there is a multiplex cinema directly next door to the apartment building. You would find it hard to be closer to the heart of the city.
Dublin is a small city and all the major attractions are located within walking distance.
Travel out of the city is also possible, and numerous sightseeing trips are organised by travel companies operating in the city centre. The pick up points for those tours are generally within walking distance of the apartment too.
