About this property

Free 3rd Night thru May! Walk Miles Of Quiet, Pristine Beach... Pet Friendly!

Quiet and secluded...nestled at the edge of native hemlock and Sitka spruce forest, this extensively remodeled home is a short, pleasant stroll down a 1-block-long gravel road to the beach. An immense juniper deck wraps around 3 sides of the house, a perfect place to immerse yourself in the subtle sounds and scents of the forest, just a few feet away, with the ever-present roar of the ocean as accompaniment. Watch for the many birds & deer who visit regularly.

Build a fire in the fireplace in the evenings, make a grab for some cocoa (or glass of one of the local wines), and enjoy the multitude of rainy-day entertainment: eclectic library of books, motley collection of board games or the unbeatable combo of blazing fast internet/wifi and cable smart TV, set up for streaming apps. Or simply curl up on one of the comfy couches or rocking chair, pretending to read a book and allow yourself become mesmerized by the warmth and crackles of the fire (my personal favorite).

We love to cook! The airy, spacious kitchen has its own garden window and skylight and opens onto a cute patio, complete with cafe table & chairs, tucked between the vine-covered cedar fence and native shrubs and flowers. Tons of custom-tiled counter space. Fully equipped with full-sized fridge, range-oven, microwave, and a plethora of cooking utensils and appliances (microwave, coffee-maker, blender, toaster, etc., although no dishwasher). Basically all the gadgets and utensils you will need to cook and serve anything from fresh crab bisque to muffins to hot dogs and s'mores.

Sleeping & Snoozing… The stunning view from the very spacious Master Bedroom (king-sized bed) looks directly into the woods through floor-to-ceiling picture windows on 3 sides and skylights above, accenting natural cedar walls, vaulted ceiling, and hardwood floor. Private entrance opens onto the 1000-sq-ft juniper deck. The Small Bedroom is warm and cozy (double bed) with natural wood paneling, vaulted ceiling, and skylight. Our "Kid's Bunkhouse" is tiny (1-room), adorably cute(!), and is bright and airy with lots of windows and its very own skylight. It sports a set of twin bunkbeds and is decorated a là Kids’ Decor. It sits 3 feet from the bedrooms of the main house, adjoining the fenced kitchen patio and the deck. Sofa-Sleeper: The living room has a queen-sized sofa bed. In cold weather, this location is often the "best seat in the house," offering the appeal of drifting to sleep next to the warmth and ambience of the crackling fire in the fireplace close by. There is also a twin-sized, motel-style cot that can be moved anywhere...

Entertainment & Internet... One seating area of the living room centers around the fireplace with comfy sofa and recliners. Another area focuses on rainy day entertainment: Built-in hard-wood bookcases hold an extensive library of books for adults, teens, and kids as well as loads of board games, card games, etc. Cable TV with a generous channel package, on-demand movies, and streaming apps. Top-speed, very reliable internet and WiFi through Spectrum. DVD player with eclectic video collection. No charge for any of the above.

Extra Stuff… The house has a single bathroom, remodeled with a tile-and-glass shower and lots of custom ceramic tile and wood. A new, extra-large-capacity washer & dryer are available for your use. Charcoal Weber BBQ is also provided. A wooden walkway meandering out into the woods leads to a platform with seating and a small picnic table. All cleaning is professionally done; all you need to do upon check-out is to wash your dishes, clean the BBQ (if you used it), and take the garbage out. We usually are able to keep firewood stocked for the fireplace.

Dogs and their Humans… Well-behaved dogs welcome! Tierra del Mar has an absolutely wonderful dog friendly beach, stretching close to 10 miles of pristine sandy beach. More often than not, you will have the entire beach to yourself. But even at the height of the summer season, a “crowd” constitutes 3 or 4 people, and if you continue just past the immediate area in front of Tierra del Mar (about 1/4 mile walking north), you are unlikely to encounter another (human) soul. No buildings of any sort. No roads. Access is by foot or horseback only. Walking several miles north along the beach brings you first to the vast protected nesting areas of the estuary and then to the natural area of Oregon’s newest state park, Sitka Sedge. Watch for seals in the surf during your strolls. They will often follow along with you for miles, particularly when you have dogs along, swimming just beyond the waves and popping their heads up now and again to watch your progress. Walking south a few miles brings you to the tide pools, sea caves, and the super-high dune of the sparsely visited north side of Cape Kiwanda. The house is only fenced on 2 sides with the 3rd side opening into the woods.

Our favorite place on the coast
This is the perfect home base for a coast getaway. It’s clean, quiet and comfy, and just a quick walk to the beach and the nice trail system at Sitka Sedge. The host is very helpful and responsive. We hope to be back soon!

I screwed up :)
We did not actually get to stay at this place because I screwed up and double booked the weekend. I assume it will be amazing as we are rescheduling the weekend with Susy who was awesome and very responsive.

Perfect location for peace
Such a great place! The beds were amazing. It was very cool to lay in the master bed and look at the stars out the full set of windows as well as the full moon in the skylight above the bed. Even the little roll away cot had a quality mattress and one of the adults chose to sleep on that and said it was very comfortable. The parking is tight and it was a bit challenging backing safely on to the road but there was no road noise in the house. I wanted to stay a week and read ALL the books. Maybe I'll have to come back in the summer and take some of them to the beach. AH the beach - so close and so serene! We played games, laughed and RELAXED! The check out instructions were so reasonable - they took into account that we were on vacation. There was a mixup of the access to the washer/dryer but one call to Susy and it was immediately resolved. Really wish there was one more 1/2 bath in the house as it was sometimes a challenge waiting for the bathroom with a group of people but the shower was modern and wonderful. Wish I would've thought to bring paper plates as the place doesn't have a dishwasher but we made it work. All in all, I would return. If you like hiking, take a short drive to Cape Lookout - its an amazing view.

Short Weekend
Comfortable and as advertised, but one tiny bathroom is odd and the place is very dated/rustic.

About the host

Home-grown Oregonian. Musician. Gardener. Muddy boots type. I love adding a book to the library, finding a new toy for the kitchen, landscaping with native plants and, as well, slogging it out in the rain, rebuilding a fence when a tree has kindly dropped a limb on it (OK, maybe more fun when it's all safely over and I'm warm and dry).

I also love sharing the house with our guests, many of whom have returned again and again for 15 years or more, the memories of themselves and their children becoming intertwined with the house itself.

Why they chose this property

* Long, quiet, pristine beach where you can often wander for hours without encountering another person. Dunes, bluffs, and shore pine forest adjacent to beach are protected land and accessible only on foot or by horseback. No structures or development at all – just peace and quiet.
* Unsurpassed beach for kids, dogs and other humans: The vast majority of the beach being far away from any roads or structures, dogs (and kids) can safely run to their hearts' content.

Within 10 Miles (!): Unique dichotomy of utter seclusion, with no commercial establishments whatsoever, in Tierra del Mar with near-by Pacific City’s (5 miles south) plethora of fun things to do:
*** Pacific City: Excellent pubs, restaurants, and shops in nearby Pacific City. Crabbing, clamming, fresh-water river fishing, boating, kayaking; deep sea fishing and dory boat excursions launched from the beach at Pacific City. Surfing, scuba diving, wind surfing, jet skiing as well as hang-gliding along with equipment rentals for all of the above.
*** On the quiet side: Two capes (Cape Kiwanda and Cape Lookout), each with their unique character. Bird & wildlife sanctuaries. Estuary and protected breeding grounds for birds and wildlife. Waylen Island State Natural Area. Unique whale-watching vantage points. Dunes. Lots and lots of hiking in nearby state forests. Surf fishing, clamming at Tierra del Mar’s beach. Great biking (rentals available) along 3-Capes Road.

What makes this property unique

* Quiet and secluded, tucked away at the edge of native Sitka spruce and hemlock forest, our lovingly furnished house is an easy one block to the beach. The 1000-sq-ft wraparound deck offers a unique reverse-birds-eye view up into the huge trees that stand within touching distance. Wildlife abounds, our landscaping with native foliage blending seamlessly into the woods.
* Kid's Bunkhouse: Tiny, extremely cute (!) complete with its own skylight, set of bunkbeds, and Kids' Decor, it is located a few feet from the main house, opening onto the kitchen patio.
* The house unashamedly reflects my own tastes: Lots and lots of books and board games. Although there is free high-speed WiFi and flat-screen for DVDs for streaming, we intentionally have no television. The quiet atmosphere encourages coming home from hours at the beach to laze by the fireplace, reading, snoozing, watching a movie or re-discovering the art of dominos; maybe later cooking up something purely for fun, or relaxing on deck listening to bird song and the ocean's roar and doing... nothing whatsoever…
