About Don Aamodt
As a farm boy raised on an apple orchard in Stillwater, MN, I grew up loving the outdoors. With my father and grandfather, I spent my childhood hunting, fishing and camping in the woods 'Up North.' Though my wife (who grew up in Sonoma, CA wine country) and I now live in the Central Valley farming region of California, our love for woods and waters of Minnesota ensures that we make time for yearly visits to Strawberry Lake Cabin. With its tucked-into-the-trees setting next to sparkling, spring-fed Strawberry Lake, we've found no better place in the world for recharging together. And we think you'll agree! Don't hesitate to contact us with questions about the cabin and the surrounding area of Detroit Lakes - we're happy to help! What's most important to us is helping you create happy and hopefully lasting vacation memories. If there's any possible way, we can enhance your vacation experience at our property please contact us by phone, text or email...we aim to provide you a first-rate service. If you'd like more information about us or a more personalized booking process, please visit us at the Detroit Lakes Chamber of Commerce website under the 'Where to Stay' - 'Vacation Homes' link. Why Don Aamodt chose Ogema
When I came to see the lot on Strawberry Lake, I was hooked. This lakefront property - though overgrown and in the need of TLC - captured everything I loved about my youth in Minnesota: a thick cover of trees to mark the passing of the seasons and to keep the cabin secluded, a sandy lakefront for launching canoes, and acres of crystal-clear water. The cabin itself is a new construction - built in 2013 - and provides lots of amenities we didn't have back in my days of camping in the MN woods, including a full kitchen with stainless steel appliances, a downy bed for restful nights, and radiant heated floors and walls.
What makes this Cabin unique
Too many to name! Mostly, we love its Off-The-Beaten-Path secluded feeling, in the dense trees, the big front deck facing the water, the private boat dock, and the lofted bedroom that feels like a treehouse - a place where you can escape the rest of the world for a while. NEW unique benefit!...we now have a 14 ft. Lund fishing boat with a 9.9 hp 4 stroke Honda motor for you to rent at the following flat rates: 2-3 night stays: $80.00 (1st tank of gas free) 4 or more night stays: $180.00 (1st tank of gas free) 14 ft. Old Town Canoe, with seat backs, available at no charge.

Spent relaxing time with family over Memorial Day weekend. Les was great making sure the internet worked for us
We enjoyed the canoe and almost had the lake to ourselves
I would go back here every weekend if I could. If you're looking for a peaceful getaway and need a break from your busy life, this is the place to go. It was the perfect size for just the two of us. The cabin was spotless. It had a great view of the lake. You're not right on top of the neighbor. We didn't even see the neighbors. The movie collection was perfect. We just relaxed and watched movies all weekend. The kitchen has every utensil and gadget you would need. Plenty of towels, blankets, dishes, etc. Having the option to do our own laundry was great, too. Les, the caretaker, met us the first evening we were there and gave us the scoop on the cabin and let us know of some good places to eat nearby and things to do and where to go to get groceries. It was nice having him a phone call or text away if we needed anything. I would recommend this place to anyone who needs a quiet getaway... and it was only an hour from home so it was perfect!
Thanks again! We will be back!
winter wonder land
we loved the cabin and access to the lake
Perfectly designed for four people!
Two couples stayed here in the dead of winter so that we could participate in a curling tournament nearby. It was -15 degrees F on the morning of the tournament, but the cabin was warm and comfy. The kitchen had all the amenities we needed and everything was clean and new. We would definitely stay here again next year!
Beautiful lake home that is exactly like the photos
This stay went way above my expectations. The owner Don was very nice and easy to talk to. When I told him that I was renting the cabin to spend time with my family for a late Christmas gathering, he offered to have a tree set up. Don was also helpful with providing information on area attractions. I am originally from the area, so I was aware of this information but for someone new to the area it would very helpful.
Les and Gail are the caretakers of the property and were extremely kind. Due to weather conditions I did not come until Saturday morning, my sister did arrive on Friday but had some issues with her vehicle. Les was very accommodating with the check in.
When I made it to the cabin I was surprised to see that the tree was larger than I expected and was fully decorated. Gail came over with more towels and brought over a fresh baked coffee cake. I was really surprised by this. I grew up in the area and know that the people are really nice, I just never had this type of experience when renting a cabin before. I also want to comment on the fact that there is a lot of dishes and spices available. My sister was making a spiced cider and forgot to bring ginger. There was ginger in the cupboards! Most places maybe have salt and pepper.
I have to say that this is the first family Christmas since our parents died that really felt like a Christmas; I really have Don, Les and Gail to thank for it. The cabin was beautiful and felt like a home. The extra touches with the decorated tree and the coffee cake really brought in the Christmas cheer.
I would definitely rent this cabin again as it is beautiful and the owner and caretakers are lovely people. I can only imagine how much lovelier it is in the summer and fall.
We had a charming and quiet time relaxing and enjoying the warmth and comfort of this cabin. A nice and relaxing time to enjoy the winter quiet.
Strawberry Lake's pristine water clarity makes it a premiere destination for swimming, boating and fishing. This spring-fed lake provides clean, clear water with 12-15 foot visibility to the lake bottom.
Consider a dawn or dusk trail bike or car ride to nearby Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge; then, walk, run or ride the miles of backwoods trails to view the exceptional array of wildlife - Bald Eagle, Nesting Osprey, Trumpeter Swans, perhaps even a Woodcock or Gray Wolf...all of which we've seen in the refuge, and so many more wildlife viewing wonders.
During the Winter months, Tamarac offers more hiking and wildlife watching on cross-country skis, snowshoes, boots or by car. Or, consider riding your 'sled' north across frozen Strawberry Lake and connect with the miles and miles of snowmobiling trails.
Itasca State Park (headwaters of the Mississippi River) is 42 miles from Strawberry Lake Cabin - a lovely 53 minute drive.
Mahnomen's Shooting Star Casino is 31 miles from the cabin - a 41 minute drive.
Pilots and passengers are welcome - Strawberry Lake is a float plane accessible lake.
