Wouldn't go back

We were a little surprised that this hotel was given a four star rating. Yes, the location is great, in chinatown in the central city, close to bars, restaurants and shopping. The building itself is a cute brick heritage building. Inside, the rooms are arranged around an enclosed central courtyard, which looks good but makes things incredibly noisy. The first problem: We got to our room and the temperature on the aircon was set to 16 degrees - it was FREEZING - not so welcoming. The room was tiny, there was actually no place to put my suitcase (it ended up in the bathroom, which was probably bigger than the kitchen/bedroom). Lucky we planned to eat out because the room was way too small to cook. Even worse the room was not clean - the bedding and cushions had unidentified stains on them, the shower was dirty with mould and grime. We were given one roll of toilet paper (had to ask for more on the third day - our room was never serviced). The Airconditioning was really loud, but necessary because the bed was right next to the internal courtyard wall, so if we opened the window all the noise from people walking around/eating would have been amplified even more. The fridge was also quite old and pretty loud too. Lucky we had earplugs. The TV channel selection was ridiculous - I heard Aussie TV was bad but surely its not that bad! The staff were nice but it was not enough - would definitely not go back.

Staff saved weekend

Interesting building in good, central location. Most areas of interest in walking distance. The breakfast buffet looked appetising and was in a lovely central space. The only problem was that the ventilation duct transmitted a disturbing backgound noise in the room we had booked. It may not be an issue for people less sensitive to noise. Staff were incredibly helpful, including walking to local shops at 4 a.m. on a mission to get earplugs, and upgrading us to a quiet (and large) suite for our second night at no extra cost. We'd definitely return.

A welcome break from the bland

The Somerset on Gordon is in a good location at the top of Chinatown's Little Bourke St. Staff were friendly and efficient but the thing that sets it apart is the building itself. Set up as single men's quarters in the 19th century, it's a charming old brick building designed around a quadrangle, home to an enormous palm. It's been tastefully refurbished, and although the rooms are pretty small, it was a great place for one person. The rooms have a stove top and microwave and basic pots and pans etc. I enjoyed my six days there.

We arrived after reception had closed and the apartment we'd been allocated was definitely unloved - the TV didn't work, there was no food bin in the kitchen, the shower door was missing and one of the armchairs was broken. When we went to reception to check in the following morning, they were very helpful and said they'd move us to another apartment if it couldn't be fixed. So, that evening we moved in to a second apartment, which was much better. But two days before we were due to leave, the manager called us when we were out for the day saying the owner of that apartment was returning early and needed it, so could we move into yet another apartment. The apartment staff very kindly moved all our stuff into the third apartment to save us from coming back from our day out, and the manager refunded our payment for the rest of our stay. All in all, it's a lovely building and all the staff we dealt with were very helpful. But, having stayed in three separate apartments in a week, we can confidently say that the standard of apartments varies a lot.

Adequate city centre stay.

Able to check in early by friendly cheerful receptionist. Room was quite spacious and adequate. Comfy bed with a good bathroom and a reasonable kitchen area. It was a basement room so somewhat noisy early in the morning from outside mainly from dustmen collecting bottles from various restaurants. But on the whole a good budget residence so close to the city centre. But not good for a rest maybe after a long flight.

Loved that it was so quiet. Huge community space inside the unit and access to outdoors. an ironing board would have been handy, but other than that it was a fantastic location for the theatres and Chinatown.

The apartments are dark, dated and run down. Privacy is an issue as windows at the front of the apartment faced the narrow street providing a clear view in from the offices/bar over the road. The curtains didn’t fully cover the windows either. The windows at the rear of the apartment faced onto the common area which meant they had to be shuttered so that people could view directly into the bathroom. It is important to note that this place doesn’t have air conditioning so a warm week would be extremely unpleasant.

The location was superb, we really liked the apartment the age of the place and history, one criticism and only a small one was we had to wait for about 10 mins as reception was not manned and we were let in by a couple who were also staying there. Having said that we would not hesitate to stay again.

I have stayed in these apartments a few times over the past years before the sale of the Gordon Place side to Coppin and away from Quest. I love the history that goes with these apartments. While apartment 8 (middle floor) looks pretty except for a couple of quite dirty/rusty electricity fascia plates that would be easy to replace, the floorboards creak EVERYWHERE. In the lounge, dining, kitchen, bedroom and ante-room between bedroom 3 and the bathroom. Odd things like having to walk through one bedroom to get to the bathroom and waking your fellow travellers up. There was nowhere to hang one towel, let alone two or four. The towel rail was broken. Then though there might have been four people staying there were only three knives and three forks. Spoons, glassware, crockery etc - plenty. These apartments just need a bit more love. They are in a wonderful location, have enormous history and are close to a good number of the theatres and restaurants. The bed was very comfortable and I slept really well - and the deal we got through Expedia made these things above more bearable. I hope they can do some more renovations. These apartments have an opportunity to shine and be very popular.

The building itself is beautiful but the apartment was very tired and dated. No aircon!! We were then told they would bring up a portable one but that didn't happen. The first apartment we were given had a dirty toilet, the second was cleaner but only just. The shower had hair in it! Also there were cupboard doors not attached, the heating panel was just sitting on the floor and the list goes on! Such a pity as it's a great location and a beautiful building. We would not stay here again.
