About Chris Gillis
We inherited this one of a kind bungalow from my parents some years ago and has proved to be very popular spot indeed! The cabin is very cozy in any weather, and is filled with local and family memorabilia. Chris' father was a famous jazz pianist. Chris is also a pianist and often performs in town. We ourselves live in a condo in town and keep an eye on details that need attention or that would make renter stay a little more comfortable. By reading our guestbook over the years, it is only too obvious that everyone is enjoying themselves!
Chris Gillis purchased this Cabin in 1964
Why Chris Gillis chose Grand Marais
We mention our guestbook because it is so full of the many things families found to do, in great detail. What animals they bumped into, which videos they watched. It is a little treasure trove, so please do page through. The pond is really just a woodland creek to be enjoyed for it's own sake, kids do get in, canoe or no. It can be hot in high summer and a little wading can go a long ways. We usually keep a little net under the cabin near the water there for frogs and what have you!
What makes this Cabin unique
We are close to town and yet well off the road and tucked into the forest on all sides. The cabin itself is a gem and the glass wall facing south makes for a beautiful bright view. Large grassy (mowed) area in front with the firepit is nice to lounge on right up to the Little Devil Track river. The fishing (and swimming) here is for kids, but there are unlimited places a few miles away for various types of adult fishing. Beaver, Great Blue Heron, Kingfisher, mink and moose move up and down the river at dusk. We have a complete circle turnaround for parking. The woodstove is modern and efficient with ample split birch firewood, and small European wall heat panels heat the rooms. The loft has a full mattress although many people, especially the kids prefer sleeping bags. All linens and towels are provided though. You can see the water from our Artesian well flowing just outside the window, ice cold and pure.

Cozy place in fantastic area
Nice, quiet place in a beautiful area. Served perfectly as "basecamp" as we visited the nearby areas, went on hikes, etc.
Thank you for your review! Hope to see you again.

Sweet Cabin in the North Woods
My husband and I loved this sweet cabin. It was full of fun books, movies, and magazines. The view out every window was of the north woods. We slept up in the loft and it was fun. We would like to stay here again sometime.
Thank you so much for your review! And you're right about every window!
Cute, clean and comfy
We had a great visit in this cute cottage. It had everything we needed. Great location that is close enough to the city. We loved our family time there! Thank you for sharing your cottage with us!
Thank you for a nice review! Glad you had fun.

Gun flint Trail/Northern Minnesota Perfection!
We cannot say enough good things about our stay at the Gillis Cabin! It is secluded and private with the most beautiful north woods surroundings yet easily accessible to the northern Minnesota gem of Grand Marais. The cabin is outfitted with not only all you’d need but all you could WANT! The kitchen has everything necessary to stay in or if you don’t feel like cooking, Grand Marais is less than 10 minutes away with sweet, worthwhile shops and restaurant choices; we’d recommend Hungry Hippy Tacos and Dockside Fish Market for casual but tasty fare. Didn’t make it to Harbor House Grille or Angry Trout Cafe but it’s on our list for next time. Java Moose is great for coffee and tea as a first stop before walking around downtown and to the shore.
The cabin itself is so incredibly light and airy and well appointed with interesting and fun artwork and seriously all you could ever need for relaxation. We didn’t need the wood burning stove but there was plenty of wood if we had. This place is stocked like a home, complete with a-list movies and quality books for rainy days. The baby grand piano from the pictures has been replaced by a beautiful blond upright that was perfectly in tune and just as enjoyable to play! There is a comfortable table and chairs for having breakfast or dinner with a beautiful view out the back window. We played games there one evening while listening to the sound of the rain outside. The view out the back is incredible; your own private wilderness retreat. The stream with the water running over the rock dam is soothing and gorgeous. The sounds of the birds and frogs with the rushing creek make you feel like you’re hundreds of miles from civilization.
This place is truly special. What struck us most was that this feels like a treasured family place. We felt privileged to be able to experience it and hope to be back. A HUGE and sincere thank you to Anne and Chris Gillis for sharing this slice of heaven.
Thank you so much for Seeing our little spot for it's details! It truly is a special place. We wait for the few days in each month where it's open and then go up and relax ourselves!
A stellar review, again, thank you
My new husband and I spent our honeymoon at this cute little cabin in the woods. We had a great time getting away from the noise and busyness of the city, and it was very convenient and getting to grand Marais and other high couple trails nearby. We highly recommend this property. It was cozy, cute, private, and the host was very communicative with us.
Thanks Krista! We got a new toaster! But we're still working on the skeeters! I know they come in the opening and closing of both the doors but this sounded worse somehow. Locals are saying it is simply a bad year.
Glad you enjoyed yourselves anyway! Thank you for staying with us.

Grand Marais has become a well-traveled art & music village with several very decent restaurants. There is such a diversity of things to do now.A couple of miles out county #8 you run into Devil Track Lake which is quite large and has a resort, lots of good fishing and also swimming at the public boat ramp.
