Had a great time. Super cute !
Bear Paw is awesome!!
No phone service no problem!
This little cottage was very clean and had everything we needed. We had easy access to hiking and spectacular views of the lake from the dam. We also took advantage of renting a pontoon boat from the marina inside the community. They were great and even gave us directions to a waterfall. The owners were very responsive and their instructions were easy to follow. If you do rent the place print out the directions because there is no cell coverage in the entire area. That made for a very relaxing time for us. We would definitely stay there again!
Thank you so much for your kind words. We're glad you enjoyed your stay and will look forward to your return trip! To future guests: While we do encourage people to print the access and check-in instructions and the cottage is wonderful for people looking to be "unplugged," some people do have some cellular service in and around Bear Paw. Also, we provide a landline phone with free long distance calling inside the continental US so that you can easily check-in with folks back home, if needed or they can reach you in case of emergency.
Blue Shutters is a great place to get away from it all, it was pure dated relaxation. The accommodation were clean and suitable. The items in the cottage was thoughtfully placed and easy to obtain. The mystique of real college life in the then morden era were embraced in the decorum. The stay was comfortable and relaxing. A must experience for all.
Definitely would be back!!
Definitely would be back! Extremely clean and tidy!!
The Bkue Shutter Cottage was the perfect landing pad for this mountain exploration trip. The cottage was clean as a whistle, and the bed was comfy too. The neighborhood was very quiet during the time I was there. Having a 24-hour guard at the gate made me feel very safe and secure. The owners, Cassie and her husband, were very quick to respond with any questions or issues as well. There is a lot to see and do in the area. Just within the community itself, there are tennis courts, a pool, a nice marina where you can rent a boat and explore the lake.. and looks like the clubhouse hosts concert events in the warmer months. Around the area there are lots of hiking trails.. there is Fields of the Wood, there is Buck Bald (a MUST see for the beautiful view) and the Cherehola Skyway. Murphy is not terribly far away either with the casino there and some good restaurants, cute shops and flea markets. The house itself holds a lot of history with the building of the nearby dam. The clubhouse has a lot of the history about the Bear Paw community and the dam posted around the walls. Very interesting to read up on and take in. Overall, a very fun, memorable trip. Would definitely recommend.
About Callie Moore
Philip & I first rented Blue Shutter Cottage as newlyweds in 2006. He had visited Bear Paw with his family as a child and I surprised him with a weekend getaway there! His mother lived at Bear Paw until she was in the 7th grade, as her father worked for TVA helping to build Hiwassee Dam. The village at Bear Paw was originally constructed as housing for the workers and their families because the area was not really settled back in the 1930s. Philip is a Clay County, NC native, born and raised on a small working farm. I'm originally from Nashville, Tennessee. We both are employed by nonprofit conservation organizations that, in different ways, work to preserve quality of life for mountain residents. We are also avid hikers and general outdoor enthusiasts and would be happy to help point you toward trails in the area suited to your taste and ability!
Callie Moore purchased this Cottage in 2009
Why Callie Moore chose Murphy
We bought Blue Shutter because of its proximity to the lake (it's only 0.6 miles to Mountain View Marina), the availability of trails and outdoor activities nearby in both Cherokee (TN) and Nantahala (NC) National Forests, and the amenities at Bear Paw. It feels remote, but it's also a little community. We also like the historical aspect of it being the original Hiwassee Dam workers' village. Our cottage has been completely modernized, but it's still the charming original structure.
What makes this Cottage unique
It's quiet, but yet there is the wonderful pool, clubhouse with free wireless internet access, tennis court, basketball goals, and a playground for younger children all within easy walking distance of the cottage. The cottage is about 25 minutes of driving from Murphy, NC, and Copperhill, TN and within an hour of Blue Ridge and Blairsville, GA, Tellico Plains, TN, and Brasstown and Hayesville, NC. It's a great getaway spot in an area that is largely overlooked as a vacation destination!
