Enjoyed Hillcrest neighborhood

Fantastic location to all things in the San Diego area. Neighborhood made us feel at home we were able to walk to many excellent restaurants, bars, and shops. Owner was very responsive, the apartment was clean with full size kitchen. Will stay again.

Perfect little spot

I was in San Diego for a work trip, working long days and needing a nice quiet place to do some computer work in the morning. The place is cozy, comfortable and close to lots of things. The view out of the kitchen window is beautiful. I will definitely rent again next time I am in town!

Free Street Parking.

This place is a great deal. We drove in from the John Wayne airport, and we were concerned about having a safe neighborhood with parking. Every night their was a spot open right in front of the house. We also had a wedding to go to in the middle ofBalboa park; that was a 15 minute walk. Whole food, Trader Joe's, and Ralph's is a short walk north of the house. If you do not know your San Diego neighborhoods, Hillcrest is very nice. There are many adorable little houses that cost over a million dollars. Check out Zillow.

Great place to stay in Hillcrest

We had a very good experience here. It was very practical for us, and we thought it was a good value for our money. If you are looking for a luxury space, this is not it, but the space was clean and good for us and what we needed. It is not a huge space (bathroom is pretty small) but perfect for a single traveler or couple. Location was great - we walked to Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo and it was a convenient drive to the highway. It was quiet at night, and the neighborhood appeared safe. I met Linda, the woman who cleans the property, upon my arrival. She was very kind and helpful regarding the area throughout my trip. James was also responsive to any of my questions. We also thought it was great that there is a washer and dryer available on site.

Convenient for everything

My new husband and I stayed for 8 nights in this well equipped cottage. The shower was hot and powerful. The bed was comfy. The A/C was a huge plus considering not many people have A/C in San Diego. The full size kitchen is great. We were able to keep coffee, creamer, ice-cream, and drinks in the fridge/freezer. We drove 2 minutes to the zoo even though we could have walked and it would have taken just as much time. The beach, downtown, and east county were all close to us as well. Another plus is the washer and dryer. We were able to come home with all clean clothes so we didn't have to do laundry when we returned. We appreciated the hip, trendy neighborhood as it is where I lived before I moved away. Thank you for the great place to rest our heads!

We had an AMAZING vacation!

We loved staying at this property, it is very conveniently located within walking distance to Balboa Park, shopping and dining. James the property owner was very easy to communicate with and was very accommodating and had a lot of suggestions on things to do and see. We enjoyed the quiet neighborhood and loved soaking up some sunshine while sitting on the cute little porch with a pretty canyon view. A new, clean convenient laundry room is a bonus! We took the short easy walk to the park, zoo and dining. Using Lyft had us around the city literally in minutes and saved us the hassle and cost of a car and parking. We are already planning our next trip out and will definitely be keeping this contact and using this unit again.

Excellent location!

My husband and I had a great experience at this property. The location is close to a freeway entrance, downtown, the zoo and the museums. The neighborhood is quiet (*save for our neighbor's children upstairs on occasion), clean, and respected. Large fridge and nice lighting. The only down side would be the comfort of the bed. Maybe the mattress and the padoing is a little bit on the older side but it's no deal breaker. Nice washer and dryers!

Still Loving it After All These Years

It's the perfect place. The apartment has a nice kitchen with a small sitting area. The bedroom has a queen bed with memory foam and is quite comfy. Also in the BR is a wide screen TV and sofa, so this can be used as a sitting room as well. The closet is huge. I love coming here at Christmas, cuz there's room enough to stash all of the Christmas gifts as I get them purchased and wrapped. Bathroom quite small but adequate with good water pressure. the covered deck overlooking the little quiet canyon is lovely with hummingbirds fluttering about the banana tree by the kitchen window, and citrus trees further down the canyon. Have dinner on the deck and listen to the little waterfall pot as the sun goes down. I'm not a morning person, but my hubby loves having his morning coffee out there. The laundry is a fantastic plus, saving multi trips to the laundromat. If ever there is a problem, text James and it will be rectified immediately. He's a thoughtful and friendly host. All of this keeps me coming back over and over to this charming home away from home.

Not great, but not the worst

The best thing this rental has going for itself is the location. You will find that you are close to everything there is to do in San Diego. The kitchen is in great shape and there were plenty of towels provided for our stay. My biggest gripe would be the bathroom and the bed, and the lack of decor. The bathroom is TINY. You can sit down and do your business while also brushing your teeth -- tiny (do not plan to have more than two people staying here). The ceiling above the shower needs to be cleaned big time and I wish a bathroom mat was provided. The bed is a good size, but WAY too soft for my liking (marshmallow soft). There is zero decor in this place as well. It just doesn't have that "cozy, welcome to my home" feel. The outside deck is falling apart and you won't find yourself wanting to sit at the outside table as it overlooks an eye-sore of a "canyon." This is the downstairs studio, and there is a unit upstairs. There was a small family staying above us and you can hear EVERY SINGLE STEP of theirs as each one sounds like a thunderous blow from Zeus himself. You would have thought a crossfit class was taking place every morning. Was our stay the worst? No. Would I stay here again or recommend to a friend? No. But if you're on a budget like we were, it's not the worst option for you.

Great little retreat on a quiet, secluded street.

My fiancé and I spent four nights here and really enjoyed it. It’s cozy, secure, and quiet, and best of all it’s close to so many awesome restaurants and bars. Only 10 minutes from Ocean Beach!

Needs a lot of maintainence work

Host is very laissez faire about the property. There are termites evident on the deck support post as well as on boards to upper deck. Bathroom wood work needs painting. The box spring needs replacing its dirty. I have rented through VRBO many times and he is the only host to tell me to use the website for his secure information, I had to be persistent in order to obtain it. It was spotless thanks to his cleaning lady. I would not recommend this place nor use it again, definitely not accurately represented in the photos.

Another wonderful stay in Hillcrest!

This was our third year staying here, with our two small dogs, and we're already planning to stay again next summer. Perfect quiet location, and just the right size for two people with two dogs. Thanks again for having us!

Delightful and charming

This is a cute rental that feels like home. Situated in a safe, clean neighbourhood we fell in love with the access to public transit, major areas of attraction such as Balboa Park and the Zoo (all walking distances). There is a bus stop at the end of the street that takes you straight to downtown/gas lamp quarter/Petco Park and for those who love to walk, you are able to walk to lots of different amenities. Another perk of this rental is the privacy. It felt very private and the deck is nestled right in the view of a canyon. Very cool! We also appreciated added touched by the owner such as a wealth of information that was left behind for us to learn about and explore San Diego.

Perfect location for my trip!

Very clean, just the right size rental for my trip to San Diego. Very conveniently located to Naval Medical Center San Diego, as well as lots of availability of everything I needed in the immediate area (shopping, supermarket, etc.). Cozy place! If I ever travel through San Diego again, I'll look for availability here first. Thank you.

Great way to get to know Hillcrest.

I was relocating from NYC and stayed here for 9 days while searching for a new apartment. I met James my second day here: he's very warm and friendly and was very responsive to any questions I had. He put together a welcome binder that was incredibly helpful and very detailed. Everything you need to know (contact info, wifi, as well as recommendations) was clearly spelled out. I also met Linda, who cleans the apartments, who is absolutely wonderful as well. The apartment is in the basement level of the main house, which is also a vacation rental. The apartment was immaculate. It is beautifully finished with black slate tiles, a beautiful granite kitchen, and hardwood floors in the bedroom and walk in closet. The bed was very comfortable. My favorite part was starting each day with my coffee on the deck, overlooking the canyon as hummingbirds buzzed around. The neighborhood is very quiet and charming; you wouldn't know you were in the middle of a city. Yet, you are steps away from everything Hillcrest has to offer; restaurants, bars, and the farmers market. Parking was a breeze if you have a car. This is perfect for a single person or a couple. I would definitely stay here again.

Great location

We just got back from a 10 day stay and had a great time. The unit has all that you need plus a nice outdoor space to hang out and view the canyon with our dog. We walked to Balboa park almost everday. Easy drive to Pacific Beach, it only took about 15 minutes to get there. Excited to book again for our next getaway.

Great location

This property was in a great location. Walk one direction and you have grocery stores, and restaurants. Walk the other way and you are in the main area of Balboa Park in 15 minutes. The apartment itself was small but sufficient. It was clean and had all that we needed. The hot water and water pressure were amazing. Parking was never a problem. Wifi was great. We would stay here again.

It was good for a short stay.

My wife, I, and our dog had just moved to San Diego and we decided to stay at this VRBO for 10 days till we found a place to live. It was a super nice little 1 bedroom that was quiet and just enough. The only thing we were not very happy with was the cleanliness. There were cobwebs in most corners, and everything just seemed like it was only wiped down and not cleaned. We had to spend a little time cleaning up just so we were comfortable. James was very great at helping us get a receipt that we needed for my work expense. He was also very easy to get in touch with.

san diego vacation

place is exactly as shown in the photos, clean, tidy, good size. location is really great as it's close to the city and tourist places, safe and quiet neighborhood too. Lots of parking. it's a great place to stay. downside is (same with other reviewers), you will hear a lot of foot traffic from the upstairs rental. also, some ants will join your party when you're trying to have a meal on the dining table, they don't bother me much though. all in all, this is a very good deal and well worth the cheap price you pay.

I have lived in San Diego since 1989 and love it.

I travel throughout Central and South America for work. I usually travel 50% of the time.

Luckily my (website hidden) rental home is pretty much plug-n-play and I have local friends who help with emergencies.

I enjoy travelling for vacation as well as scuba, biking, swimming, etc.

Why they chose this property

Fantastic location. 10min to airport, downtown, convention center, zoo, Balboa Park. And a couple of blocks from all the restaurants, clubs, etc of University Ave in Hillcrest.

What makes this property unique

Convenient to grocery stores, SD Zoo, Balboa Park, Downtown, beaches, SD Airport with plenty of street parking. Yet on a quiet canyon with birds, cool breezes etc.
