About this property

Atlas resort 2

Digital Detox anyone? (Wifi and Satelite phone but limited cell service)
Come and experience how comfortable, and nurturing off-grid living can be and how numb we have become. Bring your dog and family reunion/ group of friends too! All of the enjoyment of camping, none of the stress. Just bring your fresh food.

Stunning & secluded in the forest, but within 10 minutes of Shawnigan Lake town core, on Koksilah River is this peaceful, modern, roomy lodge with a shabby chic decor. Complete with two bathrooms, a fully stocked kitchen, 3 bedrooms on the lower level, plus a nook and a great room that double as 4th/5th bedrooms. Set up for dogs and kids (baby gates on stairs), full playground.Committed to improving the grounds continually!!!

With huge fireplace (stacks of wood at your fingertips), Satellite internet, and automatic power system, this lodge will comfortably sleep 8-12. As you listen to the rain on the metal roof; you could hear a pin drop, and the river burbling in the distance; frogs croaking, or watch the clear starry sky close enough to touch. Wake up to only the sounds of birds chirping. The private deck/enclosed dog pen off the main doors leads to the backyard with fire pit for toasting those marshmallows, BBQ, picnic tables, hammock, kids deluxe playset, large lawn, and trail entrances. This is just a taste of what it is to explore this quiet getaway.

When you're not busy hiking across the Kinsol Trestle, riding the nearby trails (*bikes available), or perhaps boating on Shawnigan or the ocean kayaking/sailing Cowichan Bay (info available) a short stroll down a private trail leads you to relaxing river swimming. Staff caretaker on site and/or 24/7 support to manage off grid systems so you can relax and just enjoy to the fullest.

Well appointed accomodation
While the drive up appeal needs improvement, the accommodations were more than adequate for our group of 6 (three couples). Property is a short drive to the lake, Duncan stores and many wineries. It is also just down the road from a hiking trail to a tall restored railroad bridge (a must see). The owner provides everything a group needs for cooking. sleeping and entertainment (large selection of board games and many TVs) Internet connection was a welcomed addition as we had been out WIFI range during our time in Canada. Lots of outdoor seating for enjoyment of the surrounding forest area.

Private Location, Wonderful Hosts
The location is quiet and secluded, and the suite is private. It's attached to the owners' home, but they were completely hands off unless we needed them. We went with four people and two dogs and the pups had a fantastic time running around the large, partially wooded property. Kiki, Simon and baby Leif were wonderful hosts and the house was clean and well equipped. Heads up that it can be a bit cold (we visited in April), so pack some warm clothes if you're visiting in the colder months. There is a wood-burning stove available but it can take a bit of time to heat the two-story house. It's also completely off-grid, so the owners recommend that the power be turned off at night. But don't worry, they provide the night lights! Overall it was a great, low-key spot, perfect for a weekend away. It was just a short drive (or walk) to the provincial park, with fantastic hiking locations (including Kinsol Trestle). One last piece of advice - on Google Maps it'll tell you it's located at the beginning of the unpaved road. Don't believe it - when you think you've gone too far, keep going. It really is the "last house on the left". Thanks to the lovely and laid back family for having us!

Great spot to have a great time
If you're looking to be pampered with all the amenities that's perfectly quiet, spotless and with mints on your pillow - go someplace else. This is a fantastic spot with wonderful, laidback and present staff who are flexible enough to accommodate 14 people with an animal and late night fireside revelling. The property is gorgeous and private. The house is fascinating and off the grid. Beautiful solar powered faerie lights guide the way at night. We were plenty comfortable and the place was plenty clean. Thanks to Kiki and Simon again for having us!

Wouldn't and didn't stay here even though paid more than quoted
Not happy when she asked for almost double the money Vrbo quoted and we'd already paid in full Then we walked in. Smelled of pot. Left and didn't stay.

Excellent home close to the lake, great yard. We loved it.
Home was fantastic. Located on a great property, close drive to the lake. The home is private and remote, but close enough to drive to anything you would need. We did lots of cool hikes right out of the backyard, including spending a couple hours on the river which had a great swimming spot. Really cool backyard that is both kid and dog friendly. The house is attached to the owners home, so any questions were quickly answered. The house has lots of space, comfy beds, and was really clean. Kitchen has everything you would need (we cooked a big brunch after the Shawinigan Lake race). Overall we loved the house and will be happy to stay again. Thanks Kiki!

About the host

Host profile image
Totally renovated by a female health care worker who knew nothing about electricity at the outset; interested in spreading the word about eco friendly power and how easy it is these days sharing the secret of this special retreat and stunning surrounding areas.

Why they chose this property

Where can you go where you have the option to 'camp', unplug, sit around a fire and breathe/ relax with no neighbors and optional phone service. Where even the teens don't mind putting down their smart phones and still relatively close to all amenities. In the heart of Vancouver Island
."Had a fantastic time here with a group of 8 on a stag boys weekend. The setup and setting were exactly what we were looking for and as a host Kiki is terminally chill, she is there if you need her but otherwise it is as if she is not there. Our interactions with her were relaxed and helpful. In terms of style, the cabin is exactly as described, "shabby-chic" a piece of forest paradise with a yard you can goof off in or play in with your kids. Many of the guys said this would be paradise for kids and young families. For a group looking for some fun, it is an isolated spot where you can let loose and you don't have to worry about ticking off neighbours. The yard is perfect, enclosed by trees all around but large enough to play field style games like jackpot or beersbie. There's a great sitting spot with patio furniture for while you're bbq-ing as well. The inside is nicely renovated and well thought-out for a group of our size. Kiki has many thoughtful items around the kitchen that she provides (off hand I'm remembering a giant pitcher, mini cereals, dixie cups etc) --she has thought of so much. The place is clean, organized, has tons of extra towels and bedding, and a fully ready to go kitchen. Further, all appliances worked perfectly and a bonus for those fretting about being out of cell service is there is a landline phone for any calls you might need to make. The surrounding area is amazing, the river spot was originally just a bonus to the place but we went down there and had one of the best moments with my buddies I have ever experienced. The river is picturesque, clear and deep."

What makes this property unique

Learn about off-gridding, enjoy ATV'ing and hiking, biking, boating, and just floating.....a short hike to the surrounding excellent swimming holes. Or, just listen to the burbling river around a camp fire beside acres of private wilderness straight out the door..
"We loved it. Getting down to the river is easy as Kiki has a trail setup (it's steep but safe) that allows for easy access and well worthwhile (only 3 mins from the house). All in all I have to say if you have a friend or friends who want something away from the Vegas/Whistler kind of bachelor party or even just a cabin trip do not hesitate to try this. When I have another opportunity to do something of this nature I will go back in a heartbeat."
