About Gary and Sharron Stevenson
Hi there, Nice to meet you. So a bit about us... we have lived in Wainui, Gisborne since 1980, when we purchased a small 1 room batch on our present site. With only a ‘long drop’, a tap attached to a corregated iron water tank and a 3 month baby we slowly built our house. Three more sons later we eventually had a comfortable home. Once the boys had left, in 2011 we decided to travel and began housesitting in Australia and then England. Once we were on the other side of the world we decided to explore and so purchased an old van and drove to France. We just kept driving - for a year we travelled Europe and Morocco, clocking up 23, 000 miles. After returning to NZ for a couple of years we again went back to UK, lived and worked for a year in beautiful Cambridge where we housesat various places. We then purchased a more upmarket Motorhome and off to Europe we went again for 16 months. We returned to NZ, imported our home on wheels and for the past 2 years have enjoyed exploring our own country. We are now back in our home and rather than get a real job have decided to rent it to make ends meet and so others can experience our wonderful location and get just a taste of beach life.
Why Gary and Sharron Stevenson chose Wainui
Gary was raised at Makarori, is a keen surfer since age 8 and we both love the beach, When we saw the property come up for sale we knew it was us!

Far exceeded expectations
What a perfect spot, sea view, so tidy, comfortable accomodation and heaps of space for 5. Excellent hosts who go out of their way to make sure you have everything you need and accomodate our last minute changes. Having an outdoor shower after a sea dip was icing on the cake.
So glad you had a great time. You are most welcome again. And thanks for leaving the house super tidy. Congratulations on your teams win also :)

A piece of paradise for families
We were so lucky to find this gem! The property was family friendly, beautifully clean and comforting. The location is incredible right on Wainui Beach and close to so many other gorgeous coastal spots. We loved our stay having some incredible adventures. Thanks for sharing your home with us we truly appreciate your lovely property. The neighbors were incredible and helped out with local knowledge of the area and made the stay even better. We would love to come back again soon.
Beautiful house, very clean, well equipped kitchen, nice location
The hosts are very welcoming, and really want to give you a good time. The house is kept very clean, and you can feel at home here. It is so nice for the kids to go to the beach, and come home again, as much as they like! There was quite a lot of driftwood on the beach, which the kids used to build a hut with. Some people took pictures of it! It is only a short distance to the city, from where we got our supplies for the week, absolutely great! Thanks Gary and Sharron!
We wondered if the stunning driftwood house was your family’s effort - very cool. Glad you had a great beach holiday. You are welcome anytime.
There is an old lighthouse at the south end of the bay, which takes 2-3 hours for a return walk, mostly on sand. At the north end is Makarori headland which has a lookout over the next bay called Makarori. It is about 2 hours return mostly on sand, then a path and steps up the hill.
