The newly expanded, open concept, great room, dining room and kitchen are naturally lit with enormous casement windows which provide views of the gorgeous meadow & creek below and the valley beyond. The rooms are bathed in the additional light of skylights and dimmable recessed lighting, chandeliers and pendants which help set the mood for any occasion. Up to 28 people can dine together at 2 custom built, matching 10 foot long farm tables made from antique barn wood. A nearby game table doubles as additional dining room seating. The entire crowd can effortlessly move to and from the great room, with stack stone fireplace & comfortable seating for games and activities. Pull in a couple extra dining chairs and additional guests can join in the fun and memory-making. The kitchen is equally equipped to host your crowd. There are enormous double refrigerator/freezers for storing your perishables. An electric range/oven and a separate wall oven will ensble you to cook for your crowd and when its time to clean up there are 2 sets of sinks and dishwashers to make clean up a breeze. To keep the kids from clogging up the kitchen there’s a separate drink station with icemaker, sink and mini refrigerator designed especially for drinks. In addition, there is plenty of island counter space for several folks to work without it feeling crowded. That’s in part thanks to a separate butler’s pantry with more than ample dry good storage, a wall oven, sink and dishwasher. Wit’s End - Reunion House is more than ready to host your family reunion or gathering.

In addition, your group can spill outside onto the covered porch which has an old school picnic table with benches and an outdoor living area that can accommodate another 7-8 people comfortably. There’s even a bar connecting porch guests directly through the window for refills on drinks and refreshments in the kitchen. In addition, there’s a spacious deck (with Weber grill) onto which guests spill to catch more fresh air and take in views of the mountain valley and creek below.

The terrace level features another comfortable & cozy great room with sitting area, 52” TV, DVD player, custom built, stack stone fireplace, and pool table. The room also features rustic beamed ceilings, triple casement windows & glass french doors. It's a perfect place to send the kids or those who want to watch the game or a movie.

SLEEPING ARRANGEMENTS: While there are lots of well designed places for gathering together, there are also plenty of comfortable, quiet spots to get away from the crowd during your next gathering. REAL MAGIC:
The real magic at Wit's End happens outside. Guests notice the natural beauty from the paved road as soon as they round the last bend, cross under the wooden arch over the driveway, and make their way over the bridge, and approach the house by car. Upon stepping outside you are greeted by what feels like the Black Forest, an almost pure grove of resplendent hemlock trees. Strap on a pair of hiking shoes and more than a mile of easy to moderate walking paths await winding through the Wit's End property and connect with trails beyond our border that go for miles and miles. The property boasts 8 footbridges that criss-cross the scenic Conasauga Creek and its tributary streams. A TREE TOP DECK sits high above the creek and offers a bird's eye view of the creek and the valley beyond. In the meadow below the house there is a CREEKSIDE PAVILION with sitting area, stack stone wood-burning fireplace, and 2 Pawley's Island hammocks. It's another fabulous spot to enjoy conversation or get away from the group to listen to the bold sounds of the creek or watch the butterflies flit among the cacophony of native summer wildflowers. The pavilion also has picnic tables for dining alfresco.

The property's park-like setting has additional sitting areas, picnic tables, swings, and campfire rings in which to help you immerse yourself in the beauty of your surroundings. Situated at the foot of the Cohutta Mountain range, and bordering the US Forest Service, Wit's End is ground zero for exploring the dozens of mountain biking and hiking trails in the area. These trails can transport you back in time to primordial old growth forests that host some of the temperate world's most diverse plant life and carry you to pristine mountain streams, breathtaking vistas, and stunning waterfalls in the adjoining Chattahoochee National Forest, neighboring Cohutta Wilderness, Lake Conasauga Songbird Management Area, and nearby Fort Mountain State Park. The Pinhoti Trail, popular with mountain bikers, is a mere 1000 foot walk or bike ride from the property and the Benton MacKaye Trail, which connects to the famous Appalachian Trail cuts through the area as well. The ever evolving and growing Mulberry Gap Mountain Bike Get-a-way is a mere 2 miles up the road. It would be hard to find a home better situated to take advantage of these wonderful & natural amenities.

DOWNTOWN ELLIJAY:
The great news is that civilization is not too far away if you need it. Downtown Ellijay, with its quaint town square provides shopping and wonderful variety of restaurants is just 10 miles away by paved road.

Quaint wedding
We stayed here for a few days and had a wedding ceremony with our closest family and friends. This property is perfect! It was so calming and relaxing to listen to the creek running through it. Also, the property itself is gorgeous and so is the house. We will definitely be coming back!

Wit's End
Wit's End was perfect for our stay. There were 10 adults and the home was exactly what we were looking for. The main living, dining and kitchen area is spacious with plenty of room to spread out and plenty of comfortable seating. The 2 large tables make meals and games especially enjoyable. The check-in process was seamless and communication with the owner was great. Sitting on the beautiful deck listening to the flow of water over the rocks in the river was truly peaceful. The outdoor space is just as beautiful as the indoor space. Already looking to book Wit's End again next year for our annual retreat.

About the host

Hosted by John & Laurie Moeller

Host profile image
We love the southern Appalachian mountains and specifically this mountain valley. We’ve raised our two girls in this valley and return throughout the seasons to create more memories.

Why they chose this property

Wits End, currently owned by John & Laurie Moeller, sits on the site of the former community of Conasauga. While all that remains today to the naked eye are the remnants of a subsistence farm, including a barn, a chimney and what's left of an old farm house (yes the old white house in the meadow just 100 yards from the driveway), this spot was at two different times the hub of community life. At times it also served as a resting and resupply point for weary east west travelers before the advent of the automobile. In addition, before the white settlers moved into these mountains, Wit's End was the site of a Cherokee Indian settlement named Conasauga.

It's hard to imagine that in this tight mountain valley that an entire community could have existed. However, from the middle 1800s to the early 1900s this mountain valley had a post office, general store, church, saw mill, and a boarding house for weary travelers.

The property sits at the confluence of three streams and the verdant mountain valleys that each stream drains. Here, in a relatively broad valley, the streams join to form Conasauga Creek. What made Conasauga significant was the fact that it was located near the 1/2 way point along the only east-west route between the civilized communities of the great valley to the west and the mountain towns to the east through the infamously rugged Cohutta mountains.

The name, Conasauga, has long ago been removed from maps, but the farm and immediately surrounding area has a rich history. The valley was originally a Cherokee settlement. The derivation of the name, Conasauga, is not clear, but it could mean "grass" or "grassy". It's possible that the name could go back to even earlier times when the Creek Indians occupied these parts.

What makes this property unique

While the house is well designed, tastefully decorated and very comfortable in all 4 seasons for 2 to 12 people at a time, we feel that it's the natural surroundings that set Wit's End apart. For folks interested in history, the house sits on an old farm in the historic community of Conasauga, the site of a former Cherokee Indian settlement. The 20 acre estate does not provide views of any other homes in the area enhancing your feel of being away from it all.
