- GolfGolf is very well catered for in the area, the Algarve has a deserved reputation for some very fine courses. All within easy reach. The three nearest are: Parque da Floresta: The most westerly in the Algarve. A fascinating course with attractive views of the surrounding countryside lined on the horizon by the sea. The fairways roll up and down through hills demanding accurate shots and good placing. The Par-3 fifteenth hole of 159 metres is simply excellent. Palmares: This course is laid out on the side of a south-facing hill overlooking the Bay of Lagos. There are breathtaking views and five of the holes are placed on the sand dunes with the long par 5 fifth of 550 metres being quite a challenge. Boavista: A delight for the average player. Umbrella pines, blossoming almond, fig, palm and olive trees line the rolling fairways, weaving their way between water hazards and carefully placed bunkers. Spectacular scenery and the clear Atlantic Ocean is visible from most holes.

Notes
- Notes on accommodation: The entire accommodation is kept cool by the use of the innovative 'Coolhouse' system. Please note this is not air conditioning, but has similar effects. This uses pipes buried deep in the ground to cool air, which is then circulated gently into the property. Combined with the specialised dense construction techniques, the benefit is that the villa is cool but without any of the side effects of running expensive air conditioning units. This means you can sleep in the cool without noise and that dry air you have with normal air conditioning. Outside: Private pool, terrace, garden, parking, garden table and chairs, sunbeds, BBQ. Private roof terrace with small table and chairs. Cleaning / Towels / Linen Towels and linen are changed once per week. Property is cleaned before and after all bookings.

Location
Coast/Beach:
The beach at the picturesque fishing village of Burgau is just three minutes by car, whiles the historic port of Lagos, with its colourful markets, attractive marina and vibrant nightlife, is located only ten minutes away. The beaches west of Praia da Luz all lie within the Costa Vincentina Natural Park, which encompasses 150km of unspoilt natural coastline. Some of the most unspoilt, uncrowded and wildest beaches in Europe are on the west facing coast. Quieter beaches face south.
Travel:
AlmaVerde is located 10km west of Lagos on the EN125 and the journey time from Faro International Airport is a comfortable 60 minutes. If you avoid the tolls on the A22 and take the EN125 all the way from Faro it takes about 20 minutes more. Car hire is essential, but easy to arrange and convenient at Faro airport.
Distances:
Burgau 2km.
Lagos 10km.
West Coast 19km.
Faro 90km.
Further Details:
AlmaVerde is the perfect base from which to enjoy the abundant range of sports and leisure activities that the Western Algarve has to offer. Long, sunny summers and mild winters make the area one of Europe’s premier golf destinations. There are more than twenty courses within an hour’s drive, including some of the top championship courses in Europe.
The open countryside is ideal for Rambling, Bird Watching and Horse Riding and, further inland, the ecology changes and the steeper hillsides provides unlimited challenges for mountain bikers. Lagos Marina has the best facilities of any Portuguese marina.
You can also rent dinghies, wind surfers, or go water-skiing from the beaches at Praia da Luz and Meia Praia. For surfers, the rugged west coast beaches, with their long Atlantic rollers, are an irresistible target. For the truly adventurous, there are opportunities for parasailing, paragliding and even learning to fly microlight aircraft. Scuba divers can explore caves and wrecks in the nearby coastal waters, and discover an abundance of sea life. The waters around the Cape St. Vincent peninsula are among the best in Europe for big-game fishing. Well-equipped boats are available from Lagos Marina.
The beaches in the Western Algarve are among the most beautiful and least crowded in Europe. Choose from among the many sheltered sandy coves along the South coast, or venture a little further a field to one of the more dramatic West coast beaches, open to the full force of the Atlantic swell.
With well over 100 restaurants in Lagos and the surrounding area, plus a myriad of cafés, there are options to tempt even the most the discerning palate. The cuisine is mostly Portuguese, but there are also some English, French, Italian, Indian and Chinese restaurants, and one Middle Eastern restaurant. For families, there are two water parks and a marine park within a 45 minute drive of AlmaVerde.

Ask a questionAbout Paul Way
Hi, I'm Paul Way and together with Chris Thompson & Ian Westen own this lovely villa near Burgau. We always thought we'd like a place in the sun, and this is certainly that.
Paul Way purchased this villa in 2007
Why Paul Way chose Barao de Sao Miguel
The Western Algarve is a bit of a secret to many. Empty beaches and fantastic scenery, combined with reliable weather and easy access provided all the incentive for having our villa here. You can choose to go with the crowds if you want to, or if miles of walking underneath the western cliffs is your thing, the area has it all. The weather is of course the best bit, the joke is we ask what it is like just before we open the curtains, and then say, "Another blue sky day!". We were out in November and it was even warm enough to sun bathe. Of course in August - take your hat! We tend to use local car hire companies, they are cheap and right outside the terminal, then it's an hour to the villa. Then straight into the pool!
What makes this villa unique
The villa is really comfortable, most people when they walk in are surprised by the space and the airey feel. The patio and pool and the villa itself form an open and adaptable living area. Some of our visitors have remarked they relaxed so completely, everything you need is to hand. When you do want to go out, you are close to both the south and west coasts, and this far into the Western Algarve the traffic is thinner and the crowds have disappeared. There is plenty of room for this should you so wish. Smaller children will enjoy the playground, and all have access to the tennis courts. You can even hire bikes!
