About Barbara Thomann
In 1995 George and I decided to change our life and move from Switzerland to the Portuguese Alentejo. We had already known the Algarve for many years but were fascinated by the unspoilt beautiful landscape of the Alentejo. So we bought our farm, started to breed cattle, especially an old endangered species, the Garvonesa cow. In the meantime many more animals, endangered and not endangered ones, as well as an equestrian center with Lusitano horses completed our activities. We love our country life in this wonderful climate and are happy to share it with our friends and guests.
Barbara Thomann purchased this Farmhouse in 1995
Why Barbara Thomann chose Alcáçovas
The property is very conveniently located, not too far from urban Lisbon and close to historic Evora and the vast Alentejano beaches. The large size of the farm with it's private lake offers great privacy.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
Our guests cannot only spend a relaxing holiday but also follow the daily life of an extensively cultivated farm with suckling cows, horses and a great variety of other animals. For guests interested in equestrian activities we offer riding lessons on our Lusitano horses for beginners and experienced riders as well as visits to our stud and training center.

The highlight of our vacation!
Every minute we were at Barbara & George’s beautiful farm was an absolute pleasure. Barbara and George are the most gracious, welcoming hosts! We were invited to join a group of people that were spending a few hours touring the farm, a tasting of their friend Erika’s wine, lunch, and a demonstration of their spectacular Lusitano horses. I also enjoyed an opportunity of a lifetime to ride one of these magnificent creatures. Can’t say enough about it. Truly memorable!
Thank you so much - it was a great pleasure meeting you and having you as our guests, we truly hope to see you again.
The best way to experience Alentejo
My husband and I spent three days at George and Barbara's beautiful place and it didn't feel like enough. There's only one guest house on the property, and if you're like us and rent the whole property there's more than enough space. Not only that but you're the only guest on the entire property. The house is well equipped with a full kitchen, great grill on the patio and everything else you'll need. However if you're like my husband and need to work remotely you'll need to be equipped with a higher speed hotspot. A bunch of friendly dogs follow you around as you explore and meet all the animals on the property: goats, donkeys, cows, pigs, and of course the beautiful horses. The owners are incredibly kind and welcoming. George gave us a tour of the farm including the cork oak grove and you can tell a lot of love goes into this place. He also coordinated a horseback riding lesson, which are taught in the dressage style. Of course the pool is also lovely for when the weather is too hot. Overall we cannot recommend Herdade de Mata enough for a country retreat or a place to stay in Alentejo. It's great for couples and families alike.
Thank you Mary, it was a great pleasure to have you both at our farm. We hope you come again next time you are in Portugal and also bring your family with you. We wish you a beautiful rest of your holiday.
Staying at the Herdade De Mata was by far the best part of our trip to Spain and Portugal.
Barbara, Georg, Rita, Carlos , Migas, Paula, Vincent, Sultan and the entire staff went far and beyond to make us feel like royalty.
The guest house had everything we needed and more. We are already planning our next trip, this time will be more than just 5 days...
Thank you so much to everyone at Herdade de Mata for making our vacation unforgettable
Jorge and Silvia
Thank you so much Jorge and Silvia - you were fantastic guests and we truly hope to seeing you again soon at Herdade da Mata
Excellent stay, without any fault!
We had an absolutely fantastic time at the hacienda of Barbara en Georg. They gave us a very warm welcome and were very heplful and respectful for our privacy! Georg even took us for a ride across his huge farm, felt like we were in Africa again ;) It was very relaxing there and the region of Alentejo is nowhere what we've seen of the rest of Portugal, very remote and calm (if you are into being one of the only tourists there). All in all a precious diamond hidden away in the vast fields of Alentejo!
Thank you Bart, it was a pleasure having you and your family at our Guesthouse. Enjoy the rest of your holiday in Portugal - it is a beautiful country.
We were very impressed about are stay at the countryhouse on Herdade Da Mata.
Barbara and George are very nice people and we enjoyed all the animals and the breathtaking view over the very big property, we like the house, the nature, the staff and the hospitality and the wonderful Alentejo.
It was great having you, we hope to see you again.
Special interest holidays:
Horse/pony riding, riding lessons with professional teacher, assist training of Lusitano horses, guided tours through the farm to see the different animals, fishing in the private lake, birdwatching, walking tours, picnic.
Fantastic beaches on the Costa Alentejana (Comporta, Carvalhal, Melides), approx 60 min drive, endless sandy beaches with nice restaurants, not crowded even in summer months.
Lisbon Airport 90 min drive, very good roads, mainly highway, access to farm on dirt road but well maintained. Use of car essential.
Alcáçovas is a small village with only some local stores. Viana do Alentejo is a 15 km drive with two supermarkets, restaurants and cafés. Evora, 30 min drive, is a beautiful town with all facilities and many Roman ruins of great interest. Beautiful market on Saturdays in Estremoz (1 hour drive).
In Alcáçovas all necessary items (excellent farmacy) are available but for more pleasant shopping it is worth driving to Evora. There you can find all kinds of shops and nice restaurants with good fresh food for reasonable prices.
