About this property

Private Apartment, Rural Setting, Easy Access To Countryside, Cities & Culture

Little Swanley is a converted annexe to Swanley House offering private self-contained self-catering accommodation, fitted to a high standard. There is a well-equipped kitchen / dining area at one end of a large living room, the other end being comfortably furnished as a lounge. The bedroom is double aspect, overlooking the orchard & paddock, occupied from time to time by Gloucester Old Spot pigs, alpacas & chickens. Swanley itself is a small hamlet comprising a handful of houses along a quiet country lane; set back from the A38, there is quick & easy access from Swanley to the M5 at either junction 13 (north for Cheltenham / Gloucester) or 14 (south for Bristol / Bath). Little Swanley offers the best of both worlds - proximity to cities for shopping or culture plus a rural location for a getaway break in the countryside. Local attractions include the historic Berkeley Castle, the birdwatchers' paradise at Slimbridge WWT & the tree-huggers heaven at Westonbirt Arboretum.

Covid-19 Aware: Your safety & well-being are of paramount importance to us. To reduce risk to our guests & ourselves, we're factoring in a gap between guests, during which time the apartment will receive a deep clean. In addition, we have invested in extra pillows & duvets so these can be rotated between guests with at least a 72 hour gap to minimise any contagion risk. Our "welcome pack" will now be limited to a bottle of elderflower pressé, a jar of coffee & a pack of tea bags plus a pint of milk. Additional packs (including our own sausages) are available on request. We also provide hand sanitiser, antibacterial soap, wipes & spray for your use, as required. We are aware of travellers' concerns and we want you to be able to have the holiday you deserve without worrying about your health while you're away from home. #staysafe

Relaxing weekend in countryside
It was really nice getaway for bank holiday weekend . All four of us enjoyed this short break and wished we could stay longer. The apartment was lovely overlooking the garden and fields. Very clean and bed was so comfy …don't remember when last time slept so well.. Would like to thank to Joanna and her husband for everything they did to make our stay so relaxing and lovely.

Brief visit to Dursley area
We were very comfortable. There was plenty of space and the accommodation had been well equipped for all eventualities. Our hostess was friendly and helpful without being intrusive. There were lovely views from every window. It was a good introduction to an area we don’t know .

Merci Jo & Simon.

Very satisfied house guests
The apartment is very comfortable, with lots of space, and good facilities. Everything felt clean and well looked after. The location is a pleasant, bucolic, and serene, as well as ideally located (for our needs) between Gloucester and Bristol. The hosts were fantastic, always available and approachable. They let us take part in feeding the farmyard animals, which my children enjoyed thoroughly. Moreover, we left something behind when leaving, and the hosts very kindly posted it to us. We will definitely keep Little Swanley in mind when we return to the south west.

About the host

Hosted by Mrs Jo Barry

Host profile image
Simon & I moved to Swanley near Berkeley 22 years ago, having previously lived & worked in Bristol. With our two young children (now 26 & 28) we were looking for a rural idyll, hoping to give the children a fresh air environment but within easy reach of city action as they grew up.

Why they chose this property

Our menagerie of animals started off as one cat who moved with us but over the years we have built up our collection. Currently we have one dog called Chilli, one cat called Spice (not the original), three alpacas called Alfie, Miguel & Bandit, a hen called Dolly and occasional rare breed pigs (recently 3 Gloucester Old Spots) which we raise for pork, bacon and sausages (no names!). We have loved living here, watching our children grow into adults with an interest in and awareness of rural life.

What makes this property unique

Though we're only a couple of miles from the M5 motorway, giving easy access north and south, Swanley is wonderfully off-the-beaten-track, offering great local walks and a number of rural places of interest such as Berkeley, Wotton-under-Edge, Slimbridge & Westonbirt as well as further afield into the Cotswolds. Little Swanley offers a taste of the countryside with the convenience of easy access to other activities which don't involve putting on your wellies!
