Your retreat is nestled on the shores of the mighty Menominee river. The pristine Menominee is over 100 miles long and drains thousands of square miles of northeast Wisconsin and upper Michigan.
Across the river is the state of Michigan, but no one is ever home- no trailers, no cottages- no evidence of human habitation. All you'll see on the other side of the river are deer, families of geese and other wildlife!
Our "cozy" cabin has a master bedroom, a smaller bedroom, a kitchen/dining area and a spacious loft.
An air conditioner is ready if you happen to pick a hot week!
The master bedroom had a queen size bed with TV and a dvd player and a few local channels, dresser drawers-even an electric baseboard heater and electric blanket if the northern nights get cool!
The smaller bedroom has a twin bed with a desk set for your "office" work.
The kitchen/dining area is well equipped with whatever you may need to prepare your meals and enjoy yourself- freezer/refrigerator, microwave, stove. toaster, coffeemaker, etc.
There is also a sleeper sofa in the living area. The loft has a new cedar (queen sized mattress) futon and another that would probably be more comfortable just for sitting. There is a Smart TV if your phone has a hotspot, feel free to add app if not there! There is also a DVD and VHS player for TV as well, along with many movies for all ages. We purposely have NO WIFI! This is our retreat and we want you to enjoy this way too, so UNPLUG!!!!!! ;-)
Surrounding the cabin on two sides is a deck equipped with a gas grill for your use. In the front yard the kids enjoy using the swing. Making "smores" over the firepit is an experience the younger ones will always remember!
Please don't be bothered by the deer and wild turkeys that may walk across your front and back yards.
Recreation:
Visitors on the mighty Menominee enjoy canoeing, tubing and kayaking. Our canoe with paddles is available for your use. Kayaks can be rented in nearby Crivitz. There are strategic spots upriver where you can launch your choice of water toys and paddle or float with the current back downriver to "home". The hiking and waterfalls in the area are the best in the state!!!
If you're a fisherman, you've come to the right spot! You have full use of our fishing boat-a 14' aluminum boat equipped with a 9.9 horse Merc outboard. "Woody" will even throw in the first 6 gallons of gas for you! The river has northern, walleye, suckers, sturgeon and more.
The sturgeon fishing is strictly Cpr (catch, photograph and release) . Who wants to eat a 100 year old fish anyway?! Our largest sturgeon to date has been over 65" long!
The greatest fishing on the river is for the abundant smallmouth bass. Floating the river and casting the shoreline can provide the unforgettable fight of the "smallies". Fish in the 20" size are not unusual.
"Why fish the river instead of a lake?" you might ask. When water conditions are right you have access to over 20 miles of shoreline from the cabin! Do you know how big a lake would have to be to have that much shore?
For those of you who would prefer to use your own boat there is a public landing to launch your boat conveniently located just downriver from the cabin.
Teach your kids to fish!!!!!
Relaxation:
Probably the best part of your stay at Woody's cabin will be the relaxation you will enjoy.
Get up before everyone else in the early morning and take your cup of coffee riverside and watch the sunrise and watch "my river" as it gently flows toward Lake Michigan. You will probably see a bald eagle or two-maybe an osprey and families of wild geese. On occasion we've seen a mink or otter. But more importantly, it's what you don't see or hear! You WON'T see or hear noisy neighbors, dogs barking, no city sirens or car/truck traffic, no horns blowing! WILD SILENCE is golden! And don't forget about those stars!!!!
Many of our guests make good use of our firepit. Woody even has the wood for you ready to go! We feel you shouldn't have to pay $5 for a 4lb. bundle of wood at a store! But please do realize that we do cut ourselves and that's not an easy chore!!
Other notes:
If you must leave the tranquility and go back to "civilization" (maybe you forgot the bacon and eggs!) the community of Wausaukee is just a long 3 miles to the west. Here you'll find everything you'll need- groceries, gas, ATMs, etc. A great fresh homemade pizza is available from one of the local eateries! They even have a new Family Dollar and Subway!
As you may have noticed from the pictures, Woody has some of his hunting and fishing memories on the walls. If you are squeamish about a deer or fish looking over your shoulder as you eat, you may be more comfortable somewhere else!
