Jackson River Retreat - Great fly fishing & close to The Homestead Resort

This cozy cottage could not be located any closer to the tailwaters of the Jackson River. The wrap around deck and screened in porch will make you feel as if you are sitting right on top of the picturesque, cold water, trout stream. An ideal destination for the pursuit of wild Virginia trout, the river also offers countless other recreational opportunities. Easy river access is perfect for rafts, kayaks and floating in inner tubes. For those looking to stay dry, the Jackson River Scenic Trail is located directly behind the cottage and offers up to 20 miles of scenic hiking and biking access on a well maintained, crushed gravel path. The cottage is situated on approximately 4 acres of land with loads of space for other outdoor and field activities.

The cottage has 3 bedrooms featuring; 1 queen, 2 twins and a full size bed, comfortably sleeping five. There are two full baths, an outdoor shower as well as a washer & dryer. The cottage is equipped with internet & cable TV, but also bring your favorite book or DVD to unplug and relax. We have new decking and porch furniture to enjoy the screen porch and dining al fresco.

We are located 14 miles from the Historic Homestead Resort, fewer than 10 miles from the Town of Covington, and less than a mile away from the Cliff View Golf Club. The Greenbrier Resort is 35 minutes away as well.

Please check this website for the Gathright Dam pulses (approximately once a month). The water rises rapidly after the water has been released.

Anniversary well spent

This was a lovely spot to get away from it all and reconnect with friends. We enjoyed the deck overlooking the river during the day, and the screened porch was cozy at night. Truly a hidden piece of paradise!

Relaxing weekend

We wanted a couple days to relax and unwind from the stress of everyday life. This property was a perfect choice. The Jackson River flows within feet of the property, cooling the air and giving a place to watch wildlife. We hiked the Jackson River Trail did a little fishing. To fully enjoy the trail, I wish we would have brought our bikes. The cottage was spotless and very comfortable. The only suggestion would be to extend the check out time to 11:00 instead of 10:00. We like to enjoy a leisurely late breakfast when relaxing and the screened-in porch was perfect for that. We felt a little rushed to be out by 10:00. Thank you for sharing your lovely place. Very relaxing

Property was great, bed was comfy, home was perfectly appointed for a relaxing River vacay. Owners live next door and they are very friendly. One critique- We were not prepared for how terrible the tap water would smell and had to go buy bottled water after the first day. It was so bad we avoided showering bc the sulfur smell lingered on our skin. Overall, a little slice of paradise and great place to unwind.

Quiet little gem.

We were so very happy with our stay at this peaceful, comfortable and thoughtfully stocked little gem on the bank of the Jackson River. The owners Nella and Jeff are also very responsive to any questions. We highly recommend this place and if we ever return to the area this is the place we will book. Absolutely gorgeous setting.

Outdoor Fun

The property is off the beaten path directly on an idyllic section of the Jackson river with decking and a wonderful screened in porch promoting time with the scenery. A short hike or bike away is an amazing biking / walking / running trail. Everything was clean and the hosts set the example in proactive communications. I recommend this to anyone looking for a calm reprieve to an active in the mountains. We did a trip down the James, a trip down the Jackson, and explored an Aqua cave!

Quaint and comfy cottage in a great riverside location

We stayed at this cottage two nights for our first time in this part of VA. The cottage is exactly as described. Not fancy but charming and comfortable with lots of original artwork, quirky collectibles, good lighting, and comfy furniture. Beds were good and the riverside location was very pretty despite intermittent rain. It was gorgeous when the sun peaked out. The main attraction for us on this trip was the Jackson River trail which is literally across the road from the house. We biked 20 miles to Covington and back. While Covington is not any kind of destination, the trail itself was beautiful and had river views most of the way with nice picnic tables at various points (good for a romantic picnic lunch with river views). We also drove to see the impressive waterfall and had lunch at a very charming art gallery cafe in Warm Springs that has beautiful paintings of the local countryside by various artists. Fairly reasonable priced and also excellent food with a pretty outdoor dining area. Another night we ate at the Cochon D’Or in Hot Springs which was excellent. We did not make it to the Homestead Resort but still found plenty to do and excellent dining options. Had the weather been better we would have tried to paddle — maybe next time. We also did not have time to take advantage of the cozy fireplace or the fire pit at the house, but we did have breakfast in the screened gazebo and sat on the deck to watch the river. A very pleasant stay all around and we may come back in warmer weather.

Beautiful Cottage

We loved this tastefully decorated cottage in Hot Springs, VA. The cottage was clean and had everything we needed for a weekend getaway. It was easy to access yet it provided a private getaway. We will definitely be back!

Love this rustic cottage

We love this little house by the river. So quiet and peaceful. Screened in porch was perfect to eat our meals and play games bed swing was our nap place. Well furnished except could use some new skillets..I know how much abuse rental Properties get especially on cookware. I always pack one from home Lake moomaw was a great fishing experience and very close owners were super nice. We will be back

Great weekend getaway house on the river

We loved the location and house, very peaceful and right on the Jackson river. Screened in porch, fire pit and cozy porch swing were perfect. House had everything we needed for making our own meals and the town of Covington was nearby.

Fall Foliage Weekend

We had a great experience this weekend. The leaves were really starting to pop and the cottage had good amenities and was close to the activites we enjoyed doing such as Falling Springs waterfall, lake Moonmaw, and the hot thermal springs in Warm Springs. Even though the fish weren't hungry, we found other fishing spots close by. Thank you for opening up your place to us!!

We live in Richmond, Va and bought the property when our children were 9, 7 and 5. Our boys grew up on the river. Fishing, swimming, kayaking, hiking and biking were all daily activities. In the evening, after a full day of being outside, we would all relax and play various card and board games. It is a perfect place to unplug and unwind!
It has been and continues to be a favorite place for our family to get together. We hope you will enjoy it as much as we do.

What makes this property unique

We are on the tail waters of the Jackson River, below Gathright Dam & Lake Moomaw. The water is a constant 58 degrees, perfect for the wild trout in the river. We have caught many Brown & Rainbow Trout. The river is perfect to jump in and cool off when it gets hot. Very refreshing!
