About this property

Brilliant Bermondsey, by Veeve

Situated within a converted Victorian red-brick schoolhouse, this elegant apartment brings an exuberant contemporary uplift amid the timeless charm of this period property. Effortlessly showcasing characterful features including double-height ceilings, sash windows and parquet floors within a modern framework, this captivating home also reflects the owner’s passion for antique hunting with its retro-themed touches, reclaimed furniture and upcycled features...

The entrance hallway offers an early hint of this apartment’s flair for eclectic design flourishes with its antique wooden printers’ blocks, leather-bound books and F1-themed memorabilia. The fully equipped kitchen takes an eye-catching turn towards the industrial with its reclaimed metal island and chic pipe lighting, whilst double-height ceiling and an artistic sensibility bring a theatrical feel to the lavish living and dining space. Here, the vivid styling is further enhanced by monochromatic rugs, retro chairs and a vintage dining table mounted on a cast-iron base from a Victorian agricultural machine. On the wall behind, the engine cover of a 1997 Benetton Formula One racing car serves as a highly unusual lampshade. Adjacent to this space, the seating area features the timeless 1920s designs of Le Corbusier, including a sofa, armchair and his classic reclining chaise longue, plus an iconic Wassily-style armchair. Original Tate Gallery posters, a theatre spotlight and original artworks of Jimi Hendrix and Eric Burdon add further design intrigue to this arresting space.

Located on a stylish mezzanine level, the master bedroom exudes taste and tranquillity with its plush king-sized bed, neutral styling, white wood floors and spacious storage options. Featuring tiles in the style of a Japanese tatami mat, the en-suite bathroom comprises a walk-in shower, designer basin and WC, whilst marine plywood cupboards add to the sense of zen. The mezzanine space itself makes an impression with its original 1950s wicker flower chair and green feature wall, playing host to a day bed/single bed and wall-mounted TV.

Retro vibes return to the fore in the tranquil second bedroom, equipped with a double bed, vintage London bus blinds, orange lightboxes and a delightful study stocked with Penguin paperbacks and London atlas guides that guests are free to peruse. Tropical plants lend a calmful air to the family bathroom, replete with a bath and overhead shower, wash basin and toilet.

Finally, the climb up to the communal roof terrace rewards you with some of the finest views around of the London skyline. From this unique vantage point, you can enjoy sweeping vistas across Tower Bridge, Canary Wharf, the City of London, St Paul’s Cathedral, the London Eye and Houses of Parliament. Just make sure you have your camera at the ready...

We Love
The lovingly curated feel of this eclectic home with its intriguing mix of the vintage and vibrant.

Cosy London Christmas
Great flat with good design making it feel much bigger than it is. Fun/trendy modern interior, with approachable hosts who had even gone to the trouble of decorating for Xmas. Don't be put off by the communal areas that are rather tired.

Convenient and easy access to the main attractions
Very well located to access quickly London’s main attractions. Two bus stops close by and a couple of grocery stores. The appartement is very well decorated and each room has a full bathroom, perfect if you travel with another couple. We also got the chance to discover à hidden gem in Bermoudsey: Tandoor by the Tower . Delicious Indian restaurant with the oldest tandoor oven in London - apparently. One little thing about this flat: it has not AC so it was very warm during our stay. Otherwise, we recommend Charlotte’s Court!

Why they chose this property

Once a rather neglected neighbourhood in the shadow of the Shard, in recent years this south east neighbourhood has become a bit of a foodie’ paradise with a burgeoning restaurant scene and an emerging hub for new micro-breweries. Having been badly hit during the Blitz and since going through several periods of regeneration, Bermondsey is an architectural mishmash, but one which allows you to appreciate the ever-changing history and fortunes of the city in the last century.

What makes this property unique
