Back again to this excellent cottage, it's becoming a home-from-home for us.
Back again to this excellent cottage, it's becoming a home-from-home for us. As usual we made full use of the very generous hamper of local delicacies supplied by Caroline and Mark. An Autumn visit this time due to the lockdown resulting in our April trip being cancelled. This gave us a different perspective on the surrounding area particularly as the second lockdown threatened to curtail our activities. Despite this we still managed to do all the things we wanted to do, bird watching at a number of sites (RSPB Bempton Cliffs, North Cave and Hornsea Mere), walks in the country side and Christmas Shopping. We were most impressed by the spectacular Autumn colours while walking in the area around the village. As in many parts of the country this year, the woods were particularly impressive. There is a full network of well marked public footpaths to be explored giving great views over the surrounding countryside. Thanks again to Caroline and Mark for such a lovely cottage and we are looking forward to getting back again in April 2021. Review independently collected and verified by Reevoo

The Bolthole might look small from the outside, but this wonderful, private retreat in the heart of the Yorkshire Wolds is spacious yet cosy, and full of luxury. It’s also a cyclist’s dream cottage, with amazing bike rides in every direction from the doorstep (both on and off road, both gentle and challenging) through mile upon mile of stunning countryside and wildlife, and also a secure bike shed and wash, and tips on local routes. The owners are very welcoming and friendly, and have thought of just about everything you might need or want during a holiday, including a large welcome hamper of local treats. Everywhere you look in the cottage, you come across some thoughtful touch. And the stars! The views aren’t just amazing during the day, but at night too as there’s so little light pollution - just step outside the door. The village is also close to plenty of sightseeing options, including Sledmere, Wharram Percy, the Robert Fuller Gallery, and the coast and York too. This is perhaps a lesser-known part of the UK, and I’m so glad that no-one’s discovered it - it’s a very special place, that feels like a proper escape. Firstly I want to say just how fantastic a welcome we received on arriving at the Bolthole.
Firstly I want to say just how fantastic a welcome we received on arriving at the Bolthole. Caroline was so friendly showing us around making sure we knew where everything was. The flowers and welcome hamper were beyond brilliant and the local produce was really top notch. Caroline and Mark have really thought of pretty much everything for your comfort with quality appliances and furnishings. There are however one or two areas we feel need to be mentioned, for example our first night was spent killing a lot of flies. We stopped counting at 15 and this stopped us enjoying our food that night. We also could not open the windows as when we did lots more flies came in. We both realise that we are in the country and this could happen but possibly some fly screens might help with this. Another issue was the heat. The bolthole does hold in heat especially on hot days like we had and this became very uncomfortable at times. Caroline did say to keep the blinds down to help keep the rooms cool but to be honest who wants to be in the dark all day. I think a personal air cooler would be a good addition to the already excellent equipment provided so we could have had both daylight and felt cool. The last area we feel needs mentioning is the matting used in the bedroom, this has a really strong smell and did effect our sleep the first couple of nights. We feel good quality carpet in the bedroom would be more comfortable and more befitting a five star place. All in all the bolthole is a really good place to stay for visiting the local area.

Found East Yorkshire beautiful regardless of rain. Couldn’t fault the property, it is very well equipped, and the hosts were lovely, so friendly and welcoming on arrival, the box of goodies provided was amazing. If the weather had been better we could have lounged outside, and made use of the barbecue. However, fantastic gastro pubs close by, recommend by our hosts.

The Bolthole was a perfect base to explore the East Riding of Yorkshire both regarding the City of York and the coastline. The accommodation was of the highest standard with attention to detail second to none with personal touches provided by the owners a real bonus. Would certainly recommend this property to family and friends for an ideal holiday. Enjoyed visits to York and Beverly to the North Yorks Moors and the seaside town of Whitby.

We had a great holiday in the most comfortable and well planned cottage.
We had a great holiday in the most comfortable and well planned cottage. No expense has been spared to ensure guests are comfortable and have everything anyone could require for a great stay. The welcome pack was the best we’ve ever had and the icing on the cake was the most beautiful flower arrangement that welcomed us into the cottage. Caroline and Mark were the perfect hosts, available if required but not at all intrusive. We would recommend the Bolthole unreservedly.

Lovely welcome and food hamper of local produce.
Lovely welcome and food hamper of local produce. Beautifully finished to a very high standard. The bed is amazing. The only tiny negative is that the flooring is really hard on your bare feet. Made of natural fibres ( possibly coconut husk ) wish we’d brought slippers to replace our shoes when we removed them at the front door.

There are not enough superlatives to describe the Bolthole.
There are not enough superlatives to describe the Bolthole. We can honestly say it is the best place we have ever stayed. The owners, Mark and Caroline have designed and furnished the cottage to the highest standard. The whole place oozes quality, from the huge comfortable bed to the fully equipped kitchen. Not to mention the added touches of the fabulous flowers in the hallway and the quality welcome hamper of locally sourced goodies. The Bolthole really is the perfect luxury retreat. We cannot recommend it enough and can't wait to return.
