Candeleda Village
Our house is located in Lagunilla, 8 minutes by car from the town of Candeleda, in the province of Ávila (Castilla y León). The region of Valle del Tiétar in which Candeleda is integrated is characterized, in addition to other internal attractions, for being a landscape of exceptional beauty.
Monuments and places of interest:
• Plaza de las Burgas, in the tour of the urban walk.
• During the tour of the old town you can see the traditional architecture of the area, still preserved.
• Building of the Town Hall, in the Plaza Mayor.
• The Plaza del Castillo, true center of Candeleda where in the Middle Ages there was an old fortress.
• Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, Well of Cultural Interest. Its construction begins during the fourteenth century.
• Hermitage of San Blas.
• The singular Sequero de Paprika.
• The Roman Bridge called "The Old Bridge".
Holidays and traditions
• On February 3 the festival is celebrated in honor of San Blas.
• At the end of July the celebration of El Raso takes place.
• During the second and third Sunday of September the festivities are organized in honor of the Virgin of Chilla y Vela.
• Event you can't miss: Las Luminarias
Every December 7 Madrigal de la Vera (7 minutes from Candeleda) burns with the fires, the Luminaries, which are lit throughout the town to celebrate the feast of the Immaculate.
During this party you can taste the products of the slaughter, which is usually celebrated on these dates, while the typical jacks are sung and danced. We were lucky enough to go around this time and we loved the kindness and sympathy of the whole town. We just got full since they didn't stop feeding us!
In addition, it has become tradition to go days in advance to help look for firewood and bushes and, thus, feed the fire. The smell of jara and rosemary in the town during these holidays is very characteristic.
Activities we recommend
• Natural pools: a few minutes from our house and for those who like cool water, Candeleda is known for its beautiful natural pools. Located in the foothills of the Sierra de Gredos, it is part of the place known as the Riveros Recreation Area. It is equipped with all kinds of amenities to spend the day with family or friends.
The Rosarito reservoir and the Santa María gorges are also beautiful places that we recommend.
