THE HISTORY OF YARRAMALONG

Yarramalong (Place of Cedars) was first permanently settled by the families William Stinson (Stinsons Lane) Erekiel Waters, (who came from Maitland in1856.) Prior to this the hills and valleys had been logged by timber cutters driving oxen teams from around Wollombi and Maitland.

The Stinson family settled in Stinson’s Lane, the Waters family in what is now Yarramalong Village.

Other early settlers included William Beaven of Brush Creek, who was the first person to be buried in St. Barnabas graveyard. Others who came to live in the valley include the Hill, Boyd, Palmer and Fernance families, many of whose relatives are to be found in the local area.

As the numbers living in the valley increased, the need for a church building became apparent. Earlier, services had been held in the homes of the settlers. So originated St .Barnabas Church.

- The early pioneer Australians, (mid 1800’s) from which many of the residents originate.
- The Cedar Heritage (The red cedar trees were logged from this Valley in the last century, and the sawmill still exists) also still existing surrounded by beautiful flora and Red Cedar trees.
- Indigenous/nature history with abundant wildlife (Platypus – Wallabies/Wallaroos and wombats etc).
- Historic Wyong River which winds itself throughout the valley.
- Horse Heritage – Horse Studs/ Riding schools etc.
- Alpaca Farm.
- Manor House – lunch, afternoon tea / dinner plus entertainment.
- 150 Year Old St. Barnabas Church (restored) with original Cemetery.
- One of the oldest Cemetery’s in NSW.
- Local Public School established 1870.
- School of Arts, built in 1904.
- Popular destination for artists', cyclists & Sunday drivers.
- Local arts & Crafts.

When returning to Sydney, also try the Tourist drive from Bumble Hill . Follow the Road through to the T section on George Downs Drive, turn left and follow the sign to Sydney (a shorter trip). This will bring you back to the F3 at Calga (after Peats Ridge.)

A poem by a guest from 2010.

Teapots and canisters, lavender and lace,
Hydrangeas in vases, bound books in case
Verandahs of cedar and chairs made of cane;
You will find "Charlies Cottage" down Ravenswood Road
The kitchens so rustic with its old fuel stove;
There's so much to see, the eyes do rove
Round the shelves-to see an era gone by
What memories,or secrets, here do lie?

Peaceful, quiet,calm and serene
Are before me in the lovely scene;
A long chair with pillows invites me to lie
And happily watch the world go by

- poem by Marg Ress (Byron Bay - Jan 2010), a guest.

Plan to go back
Our stay at Charlie’s Cottage was the refreshing change we needed to begin 2022. The cottage itself exceeded our expectations with the charms of yesteryear. The owner’s additional touches (guest dressing gowns) added to our experience. We were entranced with our trip back in time and I was delightfully reminded of my Nan with the laundry tub and the scents of long ago. Morning on the veranda was a treat, as was our dinner delights prepared in the oven provided. We thoroughly recommend this property (no bats in sight or sound) for those who wish to reconnect, refresh or remind themselves of what is important in life. The minimal reception allowed the opportunity to bond without the intrusion of social media and unnecessary news. We plan to come back.

Do not waste your money
I booked months in advance and was told to message the day before about check in. The owner was extremely hard to get onto and unorganized. I was given no instructions about how to access keys to the property early enough as there is not service or WiFi at the property so didn’t receive the message. The cottage is appalling, a giant slop almost sinking, it felt dangerous to be in there with the floorboards feeling like they were going to break through at any moment. I don’t believe this property is safe enough to continue subletting. My partner and I ended up walking out right after inspecting. Don’t waste your money.

Dreadful. Hazardous. Close to uninhabitable, except for bats.
A really unhappy two night experience. Agree completely with the review previously posted entitled “Overpriced and underwhelming”.

Overpriced and underwhelming
Charlie's Cottage has potential but is overpriced and needs refurbishment. We are always grateful to be able stay somewhere with our dogs and expect to pay a little extra for the privilege. However, this one strays deep into shabby - no chic. It is also missing small touches such as soap or a sponge for doing dishes. Other examples include: - small dead bat on the kitchen floor - grubby electrical cords and piggy back plugs in the kitchen - kettle doesn't turn off and leaks - ancient paintwork is wiped off but because it's so old the underlying surfaces are emerging through and they are all very gritty - bathroom reflects the above kinds of details BUT the hot water is great. Listing notes "television" but there is no reception for free to air and no mobile phone reception. There is a limited selection of books, CDs and DVDs - all quite dated. While this is fine, it should be clear in the listing.
