About this property

Secluded comfort: Grass Tree Coastal Retreat, Eastern Kangaroo Island wilderness

Our comfortable 3 bedroom island home accommodates 2 large families or 2+ couples, which offers seclusion, nature in abundance, and spectacular views across sparkling seas to the mainland.

What to do at home...
Relax on the fully screened deck in the daybed or pod chair, or in the open plan living space. Or if you prefer to be more active, explore the walking trail through the bush and experience the different types of vegetation on the property leading down to the rocky coastal reserve, bordering Lashmar conservation park. You will hear the birds, and see creek beds and wildflowers, ancient grass trees and if you're quiet, the occasional kangaroo.
Enjoy meals with family and friends on the spacious deck or at the indoor dining table. Have lunch and taste some local wines at nearby Dudley Wines or source local goodies from Penneshaw shops and cook up a storm in the generous kitchen.

Amenities
This comfortable home has all mod cons - reverse cycle airconditioning to either heat or cool the living area and all 3 bedrooms, ceiling fans and screened windows to allow sea breezes in. There is a TV nook with smart TV and large screen, which can be turned to face the lounges if needed, without disrupting the view.
The kitchen is generously proportioned with dishwasher, microwave, stove and large island bench which seats 4 and still provides plenty of workspace. If you prefer to barbecue, there's a large gas fuelled bbq on the deck, under the fairy lights. And a coffee machine and milk frother take care of morning caffeine!
The bedrooms are comfortable with quality bedding and linen provided, electric blankets, heating and cooling, and beach as well as bath towels.
There is an indoor lounge and outdoor area with daybed for 2-3 people to relax on, as well as a pod chair overlooking the ocean view.

Nature close at hand
Watch the eagles and superb wrens fly by and the kangaroos grazing at dawn and dusk. We have KI bird and wildflower books to help you identify your finds and even a shipwreck book if you would like to learn more about the island's history.

What to do nearby and further afield:
Visit Antechamber Bay and the Chapman river for beachcombing, walking, picnics, fishing or a game of beach cricket. It is around 2 minutes drive from the house, with remarkably clear water and hardly anyone else on the beach most days.

Ten minutes further away is the Cape Willoughby Lighthouse which offers superb views and interesting tours and information about the history of the lighthouse, its keepers, and shipwrecks around the Island.

2 minutes in the other direction sample wines or eat pizza at Dudley Wines. Or continue on to False Cape Wines cellar door, to Penneshaw for a meal at the local pub, or Millie Mae's Pantry for brunch. A good supermarket and petrol station (which doubles as a hardware and fishing tackle shop), plus several cafes and restaurants will meet most needs. The Shy Wren is recommended by guests for wine and tapas style food in a gorgeous spot on the seafront. And try the supermarket's homemade sourdough loaves with some KI honey, or locally made olive oil and dukkah!

Further afield, a half hour from the house, climb Prospect Hill to spectacular views of the island's North and South coasts, or visit beautiful Pennington Bay for surfing and beach waks. If you're not a confident swimmer, park and walk down to the bay before the big beach, which offers a more sheltered lagoon and rock pool perfect for the kids too.

Then on to fishing village American River or our kids like to visit Clifford's Honey Farm to try honey icecream and learn about the island's pure strain of Ligurian bees!

Along the South coast a little visit rugged D'Estrees Bay for scenery, walking and see if you can find the Tadpole and the ospreys' nest.

Day trips from the house can include a day on the North Coast seeing:
- Kingscote, for food, coffee or supplies
- KI Spirits for gin blending or tasting
- Emu Bay where you can drive on to the beach
- Emu Bay Lavender Farm for good food and gorgeous products
- magical Stokes Bay, to access a beautiful beach through a cave entrance, with a sheltered swimming lagoon and rock pools for the kids to explore, or
- beautiful Snelling Beach, where the Middle River meets the sea.

A day trip along the South Road (or 2 days!) could include:
- stops at Seal Bay or Raptor Domain to get up close to and learn more about the local wildlife
- Vivonne Bay, voted one of the World's best beaches a few years back ( Antechamber Bay is still my favourite!)
- Flinders Chase to visit Remarkable Rocks and Admiral's Arch)

We have done lots of bushwalking on the island so are happy to provide tips on good walks - just let us know if you have any questions.

Fantastic!
Three generations of our family enjoyed a relaxing and invigorating stay. The surroundings have a naturally rugged beauty and we were regularly entertained by the wildlife. The house really adds to the experience. There was plenty of room for all 6 of us and the scenery from the windows is truly amazing. I would highly recommend your accommodation to others.

Absolutely wonderful location and view. Quiet and back-to-nature. Lots of animal activity, especially around dusk. And the dark sky was fantastic. The home was fully equipped. Just add people and food and it is like home.

We are a professional couple with kids who have spent many happy times on the Island, and have family who live there. So we bought a home in a beautiful secluded patch of wilderness, which we like to share with other travellers from time to time.
We hope that you will love this truly special place as much as we do, are comfortable in our lovely home, and make happy memories of KI with your family there too.

Why they chose this property

This home has everything - seclusion, nature, wildlife, views, walks, creature comforts, even a coffee machine and quality bedlinen. It is off the beaten track but close to wineries, beaches, iconic tourist attractions and a little town with all of the supplies you could need

What makes this property unique

Awake to the sound of birdsong, not traffic, and the sight of kangaroos and wallabies foraging for grasses in the early morning . If you arrive at night, you'll have to slow down on the driveway track to watch the wallabies and kangaroos hop by. If you're up at dawn, or go for a walk in the bushland, you'll see more. And if you gaze out at the view you'll see myriad birds such as eagles, kites and superb wrens flying by.
