We are Ivan and Kerrydawn, a couple of hard workers who have spent our lives doing 'the best we can.' (OK, not always successfully.) We came to the South Island in 1995 for a fresh start; because Ivan had never traveled south of Taupo, North Island; because Kerrydawn had lived and worked in the area in the 1970's and had fallen in love with the South; because we wanted our beautiful children to have a country upbringing away from the hustle, bustle, stress and angst that were starting to mark the North Island. We have moved from farming and truck driving to pest control and Rural maintenance, and wild horses couldn't drag us back; we are now dyed-in-the-wool South Islanders, and staying that way!
Kerrydawn purchased this Cabin in 2008
Why Kerrydawn chose Livingstone
We were offered the original dilapidated building by friends for whom we were doing a renovation; they wanted it off their property. “If you can take it away, you can have it,” they said. So we did. Admittedly, it took a bit, but we did it; have a look at the pictures. I came across the name ‘Schlupfwinkel’ by accident, looking for something else. It is the German word for a hut, with the sense of it being a hidden place, so I thought that was appropriate because our friends are German. We thought it would make a nice retreat for ourselves and family, at the bottom of our property. Then another friend suggested that other people would be excited to have the opportunity to rent it for their own get-aways. So we did. And it did. We have subsequently had people from as far away as Alaska, Switzerland, Korea, South America, Turkey and many more far-flung places. Try it; you’ll love it too.
What makes this Cabin unique
The Schlupfwinkel provides a place for relaxation and a break away from the mad rush of today's crazy world. It is set high on an old gold mining area at the foot of the Dansey Pass in North Otago, South Island of NZ. The view from the Cottage is phenomenal (well, we think so! and so do many others) and to wake each morning with birdsong and fresh mountain air is a stunning start to each day. At night when the skies are clear there is amazing star-gazing to be had (some guests have been known to carry their bedding outside to spend the night under those beautiful stars), and the days can be as full of adventure as you like to make them. Use our lovely rural space to kick back and relax or as a starting point for wonderful adventures in all four directions of the country's compass.

Lovely private cabin
Very cozy . Felt welcome by the friendly operators . Loved it
Lovely, peaceful and private
We thoroughly enjoyed our escape from the City hustle. Ivan and Kerrydawn are lovely and great to talk to. The bed was comfy, the location very private and scenic. Breakfast on the wagon wheel table outside was my highlight. Would recommend bringing a chiller with ice as there's no fridge.
A lovely couple who were appreciative of our little slice of rural NZ. They looked after our space and were respectful, communicative and helpful to us as well. We would welcome these two back any time.
The Schlupfwinkel is set in a peaceful and private area among old gold mining fields. This is the place to sit and watch the stars with a glass of wine or alternately, during the day time, to rest your body and soul in the beautiful valley view. This is the place to write your book, to create that painting, to photograph the stars, or from which to ride your horse on his/her well-deserved break away from your usual haunts. No-one can approach your secluded get-away without passing us, your hosts, Ivan and Kerrydawn. And that's not likely to happen! (Except for the odd possum or two, perhaps.)
The Schlupfwinkel, meaning 'a hidden place; a quiet corner' was offered to us by our German friends who wanted it gone from their property. Since acquiring the basic building, beginning its slide into disrepair, we have renovated and rebuilt the original hut to make it into as eco-friendly a place as possible while still providing all the amenities for your comfort.
The Schlupfwinkel is off-grid, meaning; there is no power/electricity but gas provides hot water and cooking, while solar provides lighting and facility to charge your phone or tablet. There is no Wi-Fi at the cabin, but there is phone coverage (usually!) Make this a base from which to visit Elephant Rocks, where scenes from The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe were filmed, or take a drive over the spectacular Dansey Pass to historic Dansey Pass Hotel and on to famous Naseby, gateway to Central Otago. Ride parts of the Alps2Ocean trail or hide away here for that long planned North Otago fishing trip. Whichever way you look at it, here is affordable accommodation as your base for adventure and discovery in all directions, north, south and west, even east, if you're planning a sea adventure from Oamaru ;-) (It's been done before!)
All linen is provided and there are basic cooking utensils at the cabin, even an outside wood burner with BBQ top for those cosy evenings relaxing. (When we are not under a fire ban.)
The Schlupfwinkel is not suitable for sedan-type cars but we will ferry you to the Schlupfwinkel if you arrive by car, and pick you up by arrangement. Car parking is available at our house, just 300meters away. Otherwise bicycles and 4WD/AWD (higher clearance) vehicles may be taken to the cabin providing it is not wet. Please note that 4WD/AWD vehicles with town tyres are not going to get you there safely in the wet, (so please don't expect miracles out of your on-road tyres) but no problem otherwise; we're here to sort that obstacle for you.
Please remember to pick up your food on your way here. We are 38 km from Kurow and 48 km from Oamaru, our nearest grocery outlets. The Duntroon Hotel 12 minutes from here, has meals if you would like to eat out, or there are also eating places at Kurow, 20 minutes away.
We look forward to meeting you as more of our world-wide guests from as diverse places as Australia, Norway, Alaska and Turkey. See you soon!
