About this property

Seafront Villa with own beach platforms and pool on the Peninsula.

The Kas Peninsula Villa Ates is located on the Bay side of Kas Peninsula (Cukurbag Yarimada in Turkish). For food, Hotel Barbarossa is next door. Great bar, restaurant.

This side of the Kas Peninsula is sheltered: less windy and the sea is perfect for swimming, also early and late in the season. It is a very peaceful location, which is popular by people who like to enjoy their holiday without the street noises, noisy bars and mosques and still be only a 10 minute dolmus ride from the town centre.

The picturesque harbour town Kas (Antiphellos in the Greek era) is renowned for its natural charm at the Turkey Rivera. It has an attractive harbour front along which tea gardens, cafes and restaurants are to be found in abundance. Leading away from the harbour is a warren of winding cobbled streets full of colorful shops offering all manner of carpets, ceramics, arts and crafts. Kas has remained relatively unspoiled since, until recent times, it was only possible to reach there by sea or on horseback.

Sights: On the outskirts of Kas there is a small and reasonably well-preserved Hellenistic amphitheatre. From the highest row of seat you have a fabulous view of the sea. On the hill between the theatre and the market there are a few free-standing Lycian tombs. On the other side of the street from the theatre, there is the barely recognizable ruin of an ancient temple. In the hills immediately behind Kas there are a large number of Lycian rock graves that date back to the fourth century BC. You can see these graves from the town centre, and during the high season they are lit up on some evenings. Kas is centrally situated in relation to many interesting antiquities, cultural attractions and areas of natural beauty, which makes it an ideal base camp for day trips and excursions. The most popular day trips and excursions are mentioned below. It is definitely worth going on a boat trip to the ancient Lycian city of Kekova, the remains of which are mostly submerged.

You can go swimming and snorkelling during the trip. Lunch is usually included and is consumed in one of the little restaurants on the waterfront in Kekova. After lunch you have time to go and see the castle of Kekova and the Lycian graves. You can also go on a boat trip to one of the many little islands just off the coast. If you hire a car, you can visit the ruins of the ancient city of Myra, the St Nicholas basilica at Demre, the waterfall between Kas and Kalkan and the stunning Saklikent Gorge all on the same day. Try to be at the gorge around lunch time if you can, so you can lunch on the floating platforms on the river. Lovers of antiquity should also make a point of visiting the highly recommended ruins of Tlos along the way. A trip to Xanthos, which is inland from Kalkan, is also definitely worth doing.

Beware
We did not spend a single night in this filthy, filthy house. After checking in at 11 PM, we immediately contacted VRBO's utterly useless service to try to find alternative accommodation before finding a hotel ourselves. To be brief, the house is not as represented. In fact, on check-in, I pulled up the listing to even be sure that we were in the right place. The photos of the house's interior had been removed from the listing. The house looks as though it hasn't been cleaned in years; the state of disrepair is shocking. There is broken glass and refuse around the exterior, rodent droppings and dead insects inside. The floor and surfaces are covered in a thick coating of dust and grime. There are places where repairs like plumbing have been made in the past but not patched up, so you'll find holes in tiling, etc. This helps explain the rodent droppings. The list is too long for this review. A further worrying discrepancy from the VRBO listing is that the house is being used as a hotel. Each bedroom was numbered with a lock on its door. There were hotel electricity card slots in each bedroom/hotel room as well as mini fridges (which were also filthy, explaining certain dead insects). Although the beds were freshly made, the towels were grayed and threadbare. Needless to say, we were unwilling to put our heads down on the underlying pillows and mattress that were surely in the same condition as the rest of the house, filthy. Since we did not use anything in the house, such as WiFi, showers, toilets, sinks, stove, etc. I can't say if they were functional. The bathing platforms are seasonal and were not installed. This was a very creepy place to arrive after dark. There is a long, uneven staircase down from the road through overgrown plants, litter, old construction cast-offs and broken glass. Inside the house, the few working lamps were fitted with amber coloured bulbs, so there is very little light. When we returned the keys the next day, in the daylight, we were able to see the full picture. It was once a beautiful place but has been transformed by overuse and neglect. It's a shame. Had it been clean, we would have loved to stay there. It's full of charm and in a beautiful setting, but not a luxury villa as represented. As a side note, VRBO's traveler protection policy did not protect us. I won't be "booking with confidence" in the future. I sincerely hope that this helps someone else to avoid an expensive nightmare.
