About this property

Chilterns of Stirling - tranquil hidden treasure

Chilterns of Stirling is a really special place. The home is set on 3 acres of botanical garden and every season reveals something new and wonderous to enjoy. This hidden treasure is seductively quiet and peaceful, positioned well back from the road. Enter the driveway to be transported to a fairy tale world of calm, relaxation and tranquillity.

The great heights of the 100 year old trees draws your imagination to those days when families escaped to the Adelaide hills from long summers in town, holding garden parties, picnics, playing lawn games and retreating indoors for the evening’s parlor games. It was a time before overseas flights, or air conditioning, and Adelaideans built holiday homes in the hills for a more moderate summer climate and an authentic winter that reminded them of home.

Nature really is all around the home, with a different perspective of the garden from every room.

In some rooms the rhythm of the flowing creek eases your breathing in time with its gentle bubbling. Across the expanse of the lawn magpies and kookaburras warble and laugh, and the occasional bunny scurries into the hedges. Ducks peacefully dip in and out of the creek, waddling from the bank along the length of the water under the bridges and through the garden.

The creek has a personality of its own. After the rain it is full of energy, as if it has been caged. During the summer months it slows down and trickles along, almost as we do. Listen for the sound reverberations along the creek, take a walk along and find them. It’s a bouncing, drumming sound above the wooden bridge and below the stone bridge.

Across the bridge, the rotunda is a perfect viewing spot to enjoy the garden from. In a garden like this you can’t help but breath in deeply, and take in the scent of the eucalypts. Sometimes you’ll hear the call of koalas from these magnificent trees.

Inside the home the rooms have their very own personalities too. There is a sense of grandness that comes from the large scale of the home.

From the lounge, look out the French windows to the shade of the cascading gardens as the blue wrens frolic in the bird bath. Enjoying a family lunch or dinner, the garden is both left and right, providing beautiful natural light.

In the evenings or on those rainy days the games room provides the perfect place to savour a glass of wine or whiskey over a game of pool or chess.

For those who love to entertain, the large modern kitchen is equipped with all the items you could need to escape in your own world of creativity and turn out an incredible masterpiece. In the kitchen pantry we like to showcase some of South Australia’s finest suppliers in our condiments, sauces and a few other little treats that can change from time to time.

The master suite with king bed and ensuite provides privacy in their very own wing of the home. Lined by camelias and looking out to an incredible oak and private rose garden, it’s a very special room.

Settling in to the blue room and pink room, you’ll drift off to the hypnotic sound of the creek in super comfortable queen beds, waking up to the view right over across the garden, lawns and creek.

We offer you a choice with way you’d like bedroom 4. It can either be two single beds or one king bed depending on your group’s needs.

Idyllic retreat
Highlights were: a view to lush green gardens from every window. The warmth inside. Every comfort you'd want. Raspberry and violet jam. A great coffee maker. Chilterns at Stirling was the perfect place to spend time with family in the Adelaide hills. The gardens are truly amazing. We loved our stay there and highly recommend it.

Why they chose this property

The pretty village of Stirling, just 20 minutes from Adelaide, is considered a key gateway for the region. But before continuing on to explore further afield be sure to take the time to enjoy this well-loved Hills town and its neighbours Crafers, Piccadilly, Aldgate, Bridgewater and Mylor. Nearby attractions include wineries, Cleland Wildlife Park, Mount Lofty Summit, Mount Lofty Botanic Garden, Woodhouse Activity Centre and Warrawong Wildlife Park.

What makes this property unique

Welcome to Chilterns of Stirling, we hope you’re settling in, getting comfortable and finding your way around. There’s quite a lot of ground to cover, so take your time and enjoy the journey. If you’re here for a short stay or longer, we hope you’re left with a feeling that you want to come back again some time. There are so many parts of the property to get to know and we want you to love it as much as we do. Chilterns of Stirling is a special place. Originally it was a market garden from the early 1900s, as many properties like this were at that time. We’ve heard from local folklore that the property was filled with orchards and patches that grew fruit and vegetables, contributing to the food bowl for greater Adelaide. Gardeners tell us that the driveway has serviced heavy transporting vehicles and they lament planting in the driveway, given its density and how much it was compacted from the trucks. Around 40 years ago the property was subdivided and this main house was built, whilst the owner lived in the house next door. You’ll find a steady flow of nature’s visitors here, from ducks, rabbits, koalas, kookaburras, magpies and possums. They’re all very benign and will keep their distance from you, except the kookas and maggies will happily partake in your scraps. I’ll never forget my first impression of the property when I saw it – it was so enchanting as it all emerged from the unsuspecting front gate. We hope you’re equally enchanted and delighted during your stay at Chilterns of Stirling.
