About this property

Experience our "High Country Living" on a working farm sanctuary - Tasman NZ

Unplug & Recharge on Takaka Hill in Golden Bay.

Sunrise Cabin - sleeps two
Starlight Cabin - Sleeps 2 and can be booked for an extra fee of $90.00 per night. Both camping cabins are available for exclusive hire in our Petersville Village.

Sunrise sleeps two as a double or singles. Starlight sleeps two in a bunk and we can add a single bed if required. Both have covered camp kitchens and a shared flush toilet and gas/solar shower. The firepit is rustic and recycled and sends out a wonderful old time ambiance.

Hidden Valley Farm sits at 840m elevation, where we experience the true elements of nature & a 24 hour panoramic spectacle across, sea, mountain & city scape.

Flee the chaos and embrace the calm with off grid living & minimal modern tech, enjoy the open flame fireside chat under the immortal starry skies to absorb all present day stresses from your soul. The exuberant sunrises will set your day's mood & the tranquil moon will ensure a restful night.

Packages consist of two or more days where you can choose your activities on or off the farm. Solely enjoy the environment at your own pace, with gentle walks among the animals and wildlife on our interesting terrain or get involved in the daily tasks & handling of the sanctuary farm pets, such as the grooming & feeding of the animals in our care. A menu of our out of curriculum activities/workshops are available at an extra cost.

As we are a working farm there are hazards & safety concerns. The farm is an opportunity for adventure, exploring and learning but we insist our guests are open minded, vigilant & safety conscious. We will provide a safety talk and written information.

many farm pets run free on the property and their piles of left overs are there to replenish the soil. We advise good farm gumboots or similar & we provide anti bacteria lotion if required. One of our daily tasks is picking up this goodness for the compost, anyone can join in.

The drive is gravel and guests are advised to park at the Shearing Shed with a short walk to the cabins or drive at your own risk with extreme care to the camping village. Weather conditions may restrict access.

Most things are manual here, we have simple sola power in Sunrise cabin and no power currently in Starlight. We do provide torches.

Cooking will be on a gas ring, Bar BQ or open fire. Both cabins have taps with river or rain water depending on what is available. If you prefer bottled water we require you to bring this with you, or advise you boil the water for drinking. We do hold emergency supplies.

We have a fridge & freezer at the Shearing Shed you are welcome to store items in. You also have a large cold box with add lib ice to keep items cold at the cabins.

Our farm pets may join you at the cabins, this comes with natural farm noises and deposits of nutritious manure, you may need to navigate and suggest outside shoes are left at the door. Please do not feed them at the cabin or encourage them on the decks.

If you have children or a dog we expect them to be supervised at all times. There is a small open pond on the property near the cabins and electric fences to keep Dave our bull in his paddock.

Remember to bring your bedding and towels or order them prior to arrival, so we have them all ready for you. We provide clean mattress protectors and a pillow with protectors.

Simple condiments are provided, your first Bar BQ coals are provided and more are available on request at cost. Please bring a lighter, as these always go missing, so we only provide matches.

We look forwards to sharing our haven with you.

Beautiful location and views in a rustic cabin
A rustic farm experience in a lovely cabin. Amazing sea and bush views and incredible star gazing. The farm is an animal sanctuary with horses, ducks, geese, chicken, sheep, cattle, pigs and peacocks which really added to the countryside experience. This is a rustic experience similar to glamping so if you're after the 5 star experience this is not for you. If it's a farm experience, excellent star gazing and friendly animals then this is the place! Terri and Jim were excellent hosts always checking in (while respecting our privacy) to see if we needed anything.

It's been a dream come true to finally settle on Takaka Hill over looking the Tasman Bay and extensive mountain ranges. Our 400 acre, covers the classic Takaka marble & cast rock, virgin native forests, cave entrances, fresh water streams and typical highland grazing. We run a not for profit farm pet sanctuary, so expect to be covered in cuddles when you arrive, as they mostly run free.

We have two sons; one loves forging on the farm, mountain biking and fishing. The other is a chef in Nelson (Hardy Street Eatery)

Our love of self sufficiency is developing as is the land regeneration (over the next 10 years.) We want to keep life simple and less dependent on the main grid, re-purposing, recycling to cut down our own eco foot print. This style is reflected in our accommodation, with added eclectic vintage items so we can all appreciate how far we have come in our life time.

Terri is a Marriage Celebrant and Event Coordinator and Consultant which is another love of hers, to create beautiful celebrations in the Hidden Valley and surrounding locations.

Jim loves the out doors, he hunts and fishes to feed us, builds to house us and cracks the jokes to keep us in high spirits.

We have two dogs, Yobo, our elderly JR and Tilly our young collie. We also have the farm cat, who's more of a house cat by nature, his name is Zozzy. Check our website out to meet all the other pets.

Terri and our friend and supporter Claire Hutt have started and published a series of children's books, inspired by the farm pets in our care. "Adventures at Hidden Valley Farm" the first book published in 2023, being "Derek the Hungry Sheep" and the second book due in April 2024 "Babs goes to the Fair" The the third book will be "Tilly's Silly Sports Day" due later in 2024. The books are a fund raiser for the sanctuary. If you would like to support or sponsor us please do get in touch.

Why they chose this property

Takaka Hill has the best panoramic views, we are often above the clouds where the starry nights are beyond a spectacle. We like it up here, away from the everyday city bustle below.

Takaka Hill Highway is the longest hill road in New Zealand, often people pass by with no idea of what they are missing out on. We have the Woolshed Café and wool crafts center, Harwood Hole, the deepest cavern in the southern hemisphere, Ngarua caves and lots of look outs and walks. On top of that we have great night skies, the best sun and moon rises. It truly is an escape. Come and join us!

What makes this property unique

Petersville accommodation at Hidden Valley Farm really does offer a get away to relax and enjoy a few days at a very much slower pace. The accommodation is simple, with an eclectic vintage style, similar to camping but with a few home comforts, climb trees, take refreshing dips in the mountain stream, watch the ski at night by a rusty old open fire. it's simply heaven in our minds.

You can enjoy the sanctuary farm pets who mostly roam free across the farm, living their best lives. watching them is a joy and we offer hands on workshops if you really want to experience more, as an extra curriculum activity.

The property marks half way from Motueka to Takaka and really deserves people to stop and feel the fresh air, nature at its best and the views of course.
