The orginal Kawau Island Schoolhouse built in the 1870's is a 6 -7 bedroom waterfront bach. It is rustic and guests need to be prepared to open up the house themselves, turn on water pumps and make up beds.

It offers a real kiwi bach experience on a large scale. The bach runs on a combination of bore water and pump water. The island does not have roads but has great walks and boating, swimming, fishing.

Catch the Kawau Kat, water taxi or private boat to the Schoolhouse bay jetty and walk straight into the Schoolhouse. Please be aware that this really is a kiwi bach - it is in a beautiful location and has heaps of room but it is quite basic in some ways. There is no cleaner available on the island and you will find the bach as the last tenants left it. Please leave it clean and tidy for the next tenants. We live 6 hours away and give it a good clean when we come up. You are welcome to use the duvets but you need to bring sheets and pillow cases and/or a sleeping bag. The lack of a cleaning service and rustic charm is reflected in the price which is good value for the size and location.

  •  A truly beautiful spot, The Schoolhouse was lovely in all its faded grandeur though the kids did boil in the upstairs bunkrooms. Room for all of us...3 families and two grandparents. Fantastically located on the waterfront with the main jetty to jump off at high tide and to watch eagle rays swim about. We'd love the hedge to be cut down though, so you can watch the kids in the reserve and see the kids on the kayaks when you're having a glass of wine, without having to sit on the table.

    •  Glad you liked it! The hedge is a privacy/ view issue . That reserve and beach are pretty busy midsummer but we do trim it - less now that our kids are a bit older

  •  When we arrived, our initial thoughts were that the Schoolhouse needed some TLC (and it does), but as our stay went on, we really did not care one bit. What a special spot! The weather was beautiful, the fish were jumping and we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and didn't want to leave!!!!! Thanks so much to the owners for allowing us to share their little slice of heaven :-)
