Farmstay | Mahia Beach | #17503
The Quarters is superbly appointed cottage accommodation on Te Au, the coastal extensive sheep and beef farm of Malcolm Rough at Mahia, Hawkes Bay. Its elevated site gives magnificent views of the Mahia Peninsula and the coastline up towards Gisborne.
The kitchen is fully equipped, though delicious homemade dinners are available. Fresh baked bread awaits you on arrival.
The living areas are extremely comfortable with large glass doors opening to the decks with panoramic views.
On the farm, activities include scenic walks laid out up the coast and to the river. The walks are for all ranges of fitness, with a full river walk of a 10 km return. The river is noted for its fly fishing and great swimming holes. The railway viaduct out there is the southern hemispheres single largest concrete pour, and is quite a sight. Farm tours are available upon request.
A guided evening trip to the glow worm trail in one of the bush reserves is highly recommended. There are 2 QE2 bush reserves on the farm. Guests are invited to put their names to young Pohutukawa trees planted along the farm track to support "Project Crimson" on Te Au Farm.
The extensive and safe Mahanga beach is adjacent and there is access below The Quarters to the coast where one may fish, dive, and jump off the ledges. Seals live here in winter.

Love the rural setting of the Quarters. It is exactly what we want. The view. The tracks over to the back of the property are awesome for the Patrol and it’s always good exploring the hills and valleys. Love the big Rock that lives in the sea below where we stay. That is where I like to be. In the wet it can be a bit dangerous but still love that challenge.
The Quarters has one of the highest occupancies in NZ at around 70%. The majority by far do not have 4 wheel drive. Around 25% are in rental cars as they are overseas guests. Of course these are all sorts of vehicles. No one apart from the recent Australian who wanted to leave as the weather was bad have complained or had trouble getting up. It has just recently been graded, as it is regularly. Regards Malcolm
We left early! It is very misleading for this to be described as luxury accommodation. Great view but the house is greatly in need of maintenance and the bathroom looks like it was renovated in the 1970s and was not clean. The house was very cold and there was no wood or other supplies for the wood-burner. The unsealed driveway running along a cliff with lots of potholes is dangerous. See our trip advisor review for photos. Luxury prices for very basic accommodation...and terrible service.
Phew. It is distressing to get a bad review. This is the first in 15 years and I don't feel is warrented. You only have to read the many previous reviews to see no one else has found The Quarters sub standard. The guests following have been 6 times. They are well travelled world wide and say The Quarters is their favourite place to stay in the world The Quarters has a great reputation with guests and overseas agents many of whom use The Quarters as first reccommendied place to stay in NZ.
