“2013 SILVER Winner Golden Piwa Awards" BEST IN QUIRKY & FUN!

ACCOMMODATION: Originally the bunker from the mountaineering film set of "Vertical Limit."

Yes, watch the film - it was an ammunitions bunker storing nitro glycerin on the top of a mountain in Pakistan. In actual fact, the film was shot on the top of Mount Earnslaw, which you can see in the distance from the deck. The bunker has been flown around New Zealand under a helicopter, also appearing on Mt Cook with film crew poring over it.

Now too heavy to fly as it has been converted into a funky cosy cabin, tiny house style.

The basic layout is the main cabin inclusive of: shower/laundry, fire place, kitchen, lounge area, opening onto a deck adjoining a 1940s caravan (the bedroom has a queen size mattress) in a large private garden setting surrounded by a hedge and mountain vistas. For two children there is the option of using the L-shaped settee as two single beds in the lounge.

Bathroom amenities are basic with a out house toilet, (photo attached) and a hot running water indoor shower.

There is an outdoor fire made from the metal bucket of an old digger, so you can sit under the crisp starry nights of the New Zealand sky with the warmth and crackle of a fire before you retire to the cabin. There is the option of having extra guests camp in the half acre garden for an additional fee per person.

It is not just a very comfortable place to stay but the entire surreal landscape at your back door.

ACTIVITIES: Gateway to the outdoors you can just kick back and read a book OR: skydive, horse trek, 4wd excursions, fly fishing, sailing on the lake, kayaking, kite surfing, jet boating, canyoning, paragliding, a half hour walk around the wetland or two days walk through to Milford Sound, you name it! To book any of these activities contact:

Special conditions: Smoking allowed outside only. Check in after 3pm and check out is by 11am If bookings are more than 2 persons it is an extra $20 per person

  • The Funky Bunker is certainly a unique and quirky property

The Funky Bunker is certainly a unique and quirky property. It is centrally located in the town of Glenorchy and it was a pleasure to wake up and see the stunning snow capped mountain backdrop every day. The accompanying caravan was warm and comfortable for sleeping two but the bunker sleeping arrangement for our 20year old son was a little too basic for our liking. It was really good to have laundry facilities. The smell of the composting toilet was a little funky, unfortunately.
