The Sanctuary Retreat Holiday Cottages offers you modern clean accommodation in a tranquil setting. Situated on the tourist route between Waipoua Kauri Forest and Trounson Kauri Park, it is the ideal place to stay. You will easily find us in the historic village of Donnellys Crossing.

Wake up to birdsong and the babble of a nearby brook. Take in the picturesque sunsets and the vista of surrounding hills and forest. During the day, enjoy the many nearby activities. A hidden cycle track known to locals is minutes from your accommodation. Just up the road is Trounson Kauri Park with its well manicured walkways, audio stories of the park and visual displays to give you an understanding of the mighty Kauri trees that inhabit the area.

Waipoua forest with famous Tane Mahuta, the areas oldest kauri, is just a few minutes away by car. Borrow The Sanctuary's kayak and head for a glorious day at Kai Iwi Lakes. Take a short trip out to our wonderful west coast beaches. Climb to the top of Maunganui Bluff for breath taking views of the ocean or Motor bike/4 wheel drive from Baylys Beach or Glinks Gully to Pouto.

You can make The Sanctuary Holiday Cottages your base and enjoy day trips ranging in time from 20 to 45 minutes to places like Opononi (former home of Opo the dolphin), Omapere or the Hokianga harbour. Take the rarely travelled scenic route direct from The Sanctuary to Kaikohe and visit Ngawha Springs in just over an hour. You may choose to spend a day enjoying the history of Dargaville, visiting the Lighthouse museum, the Kumura Box or just wandering through a NZ town that takes you a step back in time. There are numerous walk ways just minutes from our doorstep if you are keen on out door exercise.

At night you may wish to meander along the road and explore the glow worms or take a torch and go on a kiwi walk at Trounson Kauri Park. Then again you may just want to kick back and enjoy our onsite sauna. The choices are numerous.

  • We had a good stay at the Sanctuary

We had a good stay at the Sanctuary. The house was well suited for the 8 of us (4 children and 4 adults). The fireplace and large living room were well appreciated during the cold, rainy days. It is in a very quiet spot with a nice view overlooking the surrounding hills.

We had an amazing stay at the Sanctuary. Clean and tidy with an absolutely amazing view. At night, all we could hear was the stream and some kiwis in the distance

  • Clean tidy property

Clean tidy property. Lovely, isolated location with good views. Cellphone coverage further away than advised. Plenty to do in region if you like the outdoors.

A little difficult to find, older property but it’s ok, sadly we had a power cut and as we were up early in the morning to get on our way we couldn’t have a shower as there was no water. But hey this happens and it certainly wasn’t Wendy’s fault and yet she offered a discount on our next stay. No wifi is a bit of a downer as I was trying to google and gps my trip the next day so that was difficult too.
