This is the ideal, quiet location for a small group of family or friends. It is a wonderful place to relax after a busy day cycling, walking or canoeing in the two nearby National Parks in summer; ski-ing, snowboarding or climbing on Mount Ruapehu in the winter.

Kukuwai Lodge, completed in 2014, has been specially designed to be the ideal set-up for a holiday home and to be perfect for the climate on the Central Plateau in summer or winter. The house has natural timber internal walls throughout, which make it feel very cosy and welcoming. It is cool in summer, but lovely and warm in the winter, having big north-facing windows.

For skiers and snowboarders, a 10-minute drive takes you to the start of the mountain road to the Turoa ski-field, or a 30-minute drive to Whakapapa village. At the end of the day, there are drying facilities in the lodge for wet gear and ski boots.

This area is a fantastic, unspoiled region of New Zealand that has much to offer for anyone who loves the outdoors. Raetihi is the perfect location for exploring the Central North Island cycle tracks of The New Zealand Cycle Trail. The Whanganui River is the gateway to the Whanganui National Park by canoe, inflatable raft or jet-boat and the historic ‘Bridge to Nowhere’. For the less adventurous, there are magical drives through the National Park to Whanganui River at Pipiriki or to the spectacular picnic sites on the Manganui River at Ruatiti.

In the Tongariro National Park, there are many spectacular walks, including the Tongariro Alpine Crossing and the Mount Ruapehu Crater Climb. Ohakune has the Old Coach Road which runs through to Horopito, while in nearby Tokaanu there are hot thermal springs on the southern edge of Lake Taupo.

  • Small, but extremely comfy and homy place

Small, but extremely comfy and homy place. Fireplace makes the whole hose warm within minutes and you get to dry your wet boots and gloves:-) Big living room is spacious enough for everyone to relax after long day on the mountain. Great place, however don't forget to bring your own blankets, duvets or sleeping bags!
