Guest Access

Guests have access to all shared spaces, the whole property, the river alongside the boundary of the property, and all bedrooms they have booked. The property is surrounded by working farms, so while guests can of course stroll along the road, they cannot enter any surrounding buildings (e.g. wool sheds) or paddocks.

Interaction with Guests

This is our holiday house, so when you're there, we're at home in Wellington.

The Neighbourhood

The best thing about the Quarters is that it's in the middle of nowhere – here you can truly escape the real world. There are a handful of neighbours (mainly farmers) and generally all you can hear is the babbling creek, the native birds, and an occasional flock of sheep being moved along the main road. There's no mobile coverage, and no internet.

Getting around

You'll need a car to get from Masterton, the nearest town, which is a 45 minute drive away. Wellington is just over two hours away by car.

NB the last fifteen minutes of the drive out are on shingle road.

Special conditions: The most important thing is that our water supply (rainwater) is shared with the neighbouring farm and this is a fairly dry part of the country, so please use water sparingly. New Zealand countryside rules apply: mainly, if it's yellow, let it mellow. Given the nearby working farms, it's advisable to not bring dogs (or any other pets) unless they're accustomed to such things. And if you do bring animals, please not indoors. No smoking indoors (and please remove any butts from outdoors).

  • Property great for enjoying the last of the summer days

Property great for enjoying the last of the summer days. It was lovely and peaceful and therefore great to catch up with our friends together. We just didn't venture far due to the fact it was the start of the hunting season and lots of forestry around!

  • The location was beautiful and peaceful

The location was beautiful and peaceful. Be aware for large groups there is only one toilet, and access to some bedrooms is through other bedrooms or through doors to the outside. It is a shearers quarters after all. Unfortunately when we arrived sheep had been in the garden around the building and it made the outside unusable for a day or so, as lots of sheep poo around! Up the road there are lovely friendly horses and the kids we had (aged 5 - 10) were able to roam free safely.

    Owner/manager responds:

Cheers - so glad you enjoyed your stay despite the sheep poo (they busted through the fence from the neighbor!). Bathrooms facilities include: one internal bathroom off the lounge with a toilet, bath and hand basin, second bathroom has shower and hand basin only. There are two additional toilets accessed with the back of the house (no internal access) - both flush but are in the process of being upgraded.

  • We had a fantastic time here for our midwinter Christmas get together

We had a fantastic time here for our midwinter Christmas get together. It was so cozy and warm with the fire going and the farmer next door delivered us some more wood and a wild pig that he'd hunted!! The bach is rustic but very comfortable / spacious- we loved that the kids could run around without having to be on edge all the time. Good size rooms - i think they were in process of getting curtains and also a freezer. We'll all be back in summer to enjoy this great little tucked away gem!!

  • We stayed with 2 other families & had 4 kids, 4 yrs...

We stayed with 2 other families & had 4 kids, 4 yrs and under. We stayed in early Sept, summer would have been a better option as was really cold. As a kid friendly property, there needs to be a proper fireguard installed on the fire. I was disapointed to be told to use the high chair I had to get it out and clean it! Being so cold we only used one of the three toilets. Two toilets are accessible at the back on the property and one needs to be flushed with a bucket of water.

    Owner/manager responds:

Yes the place is very rustic and carefree. Toilet with the broken cistern is in the process of being upgraded.
