About this property

Casa Juliana: Renovated Oceanview Villa, Playa Junquillal, Guanacast

Casa Juliana is a privately owned villa located on a hillside in beautiful Playa Junquillal (pronounced hoon-key-yal), a tranquil village located in the northwestern Guanacaste region of Costa Rica. Golf, tennis, fishing, swimming, surfing, secluded beaches, snorkeling, and incredible tropical vegetation and wildlife ensure a fantastic vacation, with something for everyone in this unspoiled oasis.

Playa Junquillal is conveniently located 36 km-40 minutes from Tamarindo, if you are seeking a little night life, and only 15 km-20 minutes from the Hacienda Pinilla Golf Course (an 18 hole championship course on the gold coast of Costa Rica), if golf is your game. You are also steps away from practicing that backhand on the tennis court located at the next-door Guacamaya Lodge (small court fee), many excellent local restaurants, a local turtle sanctuary, and outstanding horseback riding.

The village of Junquillal remains unspoiled, a haven for those looking to spend their precious leisure time on the road less traveled. Local Costa Ricans (Ticos), as well as international ex-patriots from around the world welcome travelers with a warm hospitality seldom experienced in the whirlwind of the "real" world.

Taste the local cuisine at one of the many restaurants within walking or easy driving distance of the villa or create your own gourmet experience at home by yourselves or with the help of an available local chef. Soak in the ocean views from the second floor balcony or enjoy 'un refresco' (cold drink) at the beautiful wooden bar on the screened in great room on the first floor terrace. Listen to howler monkeys in the trees or watch iguanas laze in the sun. Stroll 300 yards/meters to the pristine local beach. This and more awaits your arrival to this Costa Rican paradise.

Casa Juliana is a private villa that comfortably sleeps up to 13 people and is located on an over an acre of lush, tropical gardens overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The four bedrooms are spacious and airy, and each is equipped with an individually controlled AC unit and ceiling fan. Equipped with 3½ bathrooms, the villa can easily accommodate 2 families. From the second floor terrace to the barbecue grill with a surrounding bar and seating area, the house is architecturally beautiful, crafted from local stone, ceramic tile, and native hard woods.

Master suite: Located on the second floor, this loft-style bedroom has a king-sized bed, a full bathroom with a shower, a large sitting area with two futon sofas that covert to double beds (perfect for families with small children) and a private terrace, complete with hammock, small bar area, and comfortable teak porch furniture. This room has a flat screen TV, DVD player, and DVD library.

Bedroom 2: Located on the first floor with a private entrance from the terrace, this bedroom has a queen bed and a private full bathroom with shower.

Bedrooms 3 and 4: Also located on the first floor inside the main house, these bedrooms are adjoined by a large, full bathroom with shower. Bedroom 3 has 2 twin beds and bedroom 4 has a twin and a double bed. Both of these bedrooms have grand windows looking out onto lush tropical vegetation and palm trees.

Kitchen: The kitchen is equipped with a spacious fridge and freezer, electric stove and oven, microwave oven, cooking utensils, dishwasher, all needed cooking appliances, and tableware for up to 13 guests.

Screened terrace: The large screened terrace has a magnificent bar for informal breakfasts and lunches or for a rejuvenating cocktail at the end of the day. This 850 square foot (85 square meter) great room includes a teak dining table & chairs, and comfortable couches and lounge chairs for informal socializing. This terrace opens onto a stone patio area furnished with teak lounge chairs surrounding the pool area.

Rancho and BBQ grill: The terrace also adjoins an open air rancho-style shelter housing a BBQ grill that is surrounded by a 360 degree wooden bar with comfortable bar stools for visitors to socialize with the chef as he/she prepares lunch or dinner.

Pool: A beautiful 30 square meter glass tile swimming pool and convenient outdoor shower with hot water directly adjoin the terrace and rancho.

Great location and beautiful property
We had a great time at Casa Juliana with our family party of 9. It is a quick walk to Playa Junquillal, which is a stunning beach. We enjoyed the pool and screened in porch. It is very private, but there are great restaurants very close to the house. I would note that the upstairs loft bedroom is beautiful, with the attached living area, but it may not be appropriate for kids or folks with concerns about mobility. The bed requires climbing stairs and the stairs are fairly steep. This definitely did not detract from the beautiful property, but did require us to shuffle bedroom assignments!

Fabulous family retreat!
My husband, myself and our family including grandchildren stayed at Casa Juliana for a weeks getaway. We were 7 adults and 2 children of 4 and 22 months. It is the ideal place for a family that would like to vacation together and have lots of space to enjoy. The in-the-ground pool was well appreciated especially after a day at the beach in the hot sun. Be aware that if young children are in your party, you must be vigilant as the pool is not fenced in. Someone came every second day to clean it. The Rancho BBQ area was a hit with the men. The screened in veranda is a very nice area to spend time in as well as around the pool. The cushions would need to be replaced however as they are somewhat worn and stained. The kitchen has everything you need to make your own meals. We did most of the cooking with groceries we bought in local marts. As we were arriving late on the first day, I asked to have some basic food items to be stocked for us before our arrival. It was there as promised. Be ready to deal with keys, keys for every door. Expect daily visits from local doggos and cats. They are friendly and would stay just for a few minutes and then be on their way. If you are a bird watcher, there are many birds that visit the trees and shrubs that surround the Villa. The beach which is just minutes walking distance from the villa is spectacular. My sons did boogie boarding & grandkids loved the waves. If you love the heat and laidback living you will really love Casa Juliana.

Last minute trip
We booked last minute, therefore didn’t have a chance to communicate a whole lot before getting there. It’s a big place with plenty of bathrooms and has a nice setup for many people. We didn’t realize right away that an email was sent with all there is to know about the property and the area. I looked hard for a book, but there wasn’t one. After getting settled in, we were sitting out in the screened porch (which is heavenly) and the alarm to the house sounded for reasons we still don’t know. I think we alerted the entire coast it was so loud! My kids hadn’t heard an alarm like that before and were completely freaked out. After disarming it, we couldn’t figure out how to reset it and were worried it would go off again. Our kids were scared!! We messaged the property manager right away, but it took 2 days before someone came to look at it. They just turned it off as well and we were fine, but with bars on the windows and instructions to use it, it left us uneasy. We ended up enjoying the property, the many amazing restaurants surrounding it and the beaches were fantastic. We loved walking to the beach for sunsets and the privacy of our own pool. The monkeys in the tree out front was a huge bonus and being able to walk to restaurants made it easy. The bedroom temp on the main level would only cool so much, so we slept without covers. Use bug spray even if you don’t think there are bugs biting. Lovely place and would return again.

Family vacation
Nice place to stay if you want to relax and get away. Close to some amazing restaurants… our favorite was Tides. They have live music and great fish and chips. The best frozen drinks on our trip. The location is remote and it takes a while to get to attractions. Only downside

Great house with private pool
Our family of 4 adults and 3 kids stayed at Casa Juliana for 3 nights in mid- November. It fit all of us comfortably, with privacy. The enclosed outdoor living space was where we spent most time, eating meals or watching our kids swim. Yes, there were some ants and water leaking in the covered area, but this is not unexpected when travelling in Costa Rica. The pool is surrounded by vegetation and private. Our kids swam for hours a day. We loved the quaint little ‘town’, and that we were walking distance to the beach. There are some really great restaurants within walking distance and we were lucky enough to see a turtle laying eggs as we walked along the beach after dinner one night. Our host Georgina was also most pleasant, accommodating, and great with communication. Our family really loved our stay here and would happily return.

About the host

My husband Michael, brother, Chris, and I are very close and this vacation home adventure has only brought us closer. Since he and his wife Elenora live in Denver, and we live in Pittsburgh, Junquillal is the perfect meeting spot for us to get together. We are all very into sports (he's into golf, El' like yoga, whereas we are consummate tennis junkies!), so we always have a game of frisbee or wiffle ball going on at the beach. We also enjoy the opportunity to relax floating in the pool or hanging out listening to music in the screening in first floor terrace.

Why they chose this property

We purchased this home to get away from the crazy pace of everyday life. We are able to get down about several times/year and are never ready to leave when our time ends. It is tucked away, yet easily accessible from the airport in Liberia (and with the new airport going in, we are expecting more flights options!) as well as adventure outings like canopy tours and horseback riding (my personal favorite. I go every time I am there. Erika is great, her horses beautifully cared for and there is nothing quite like a canter on the beach).

What makes this property unique

Casa Juliana is definitely a 'home away from home'. Watching the sunset, playing games on the terrace and lounging in the pool are daily rituals. The villa is perfect for extended family gatherings. We have had several couples and their families stay here for weddings.

One of our favorite jokes is complaining about how crowded the beach is getting if we happen to see a lone beachcomber!
