The city of Yaoundé is located south of the Central Region and is 250 km east of the coast of Biafra Bay. This hilly site is divided into three topographic units inscribed in a bedrock of Precambrian gneiss: the inselberg barrier in the north-west dominated by the Mbam Minkom Mountains (1,295 m) and Mount Nkolodom (1,221 m) and the southwest with Mount Eloumden (1,159 m); a set of hills from 600 to 700 m altitude and plateaus; valleys also called elobis.
The different neighborhoods are arranged according to the rugged terrain of the city site. Roads and buildings grow mainly on the heights of different hills, while swampy lowlands often give way to subsistence agriculture, vegetation and many small streams. Some of them are the rivers Mfoundi, Ekozoa, Biyeme and Mefou. Near the administrative center of Yaoundé is a lake called Municipal lake, created in 1951-1952.
The French Cultural Institute (Avenue Kennedy) and the Goethe-Institut Kamerun located in Bastos screen weekly films or provide shows (theaters, concerts) or conferences. You can also visit the Cameroon Cultural Center in the Nlongkak district.
Yaoundé has many restaurants and nightclubs. Some well known nightclubs are Katios, Sanza, Safari, Mvet, Olympic Balafon. There are also cabarets: clay, El Pachinko, Carossel and Le Club Bantou where you can see local artists performing live on stage.
Each year, the famous "wild boar hunt" takes place in Yaoundé. A large number of traditional dances are performed around the sacrifice.
