About this property

Luxury farmhouse with amazing views set in a rural valley just 7 minutes to Rond

A beautifully renovated country house with swimming pool and gardens set in 5 acres of a lush and verdant valley just 10 minutes from the city of Ronda. La Alcantarilla is a 7 bedroom farmhouse that is comprised of 2 semi detached houses. Often let in its entirety to one group but for smaller groups the 3 bedroom house is made available. Casa Maia is the name for the 3 bedroom house. When Casa Maia is rented, the owners may be living next door in the 4 bedroom side of the property, but their side is never rented to holiday makers when Casa Maia is let.
The nearby village, just a ten minute walk, is known for its excellent bars and restaurants. An area prized for its landscape and popular with walkers, birdwatchers and cyclists.
La Alcantarilla was originally a walnut and apple smallholding, and its rolling land is bordered by a river, veined by a stream and encircled by a Moorish water channel.
The water emanates from a mountain spring and crosses the brook over a Moorish stone aqueduct at the far end of the vegetable garden.
The house is painted in lime white and stony hues, with natural linen curtains and green/blue accents. There is an emphasis on traditional building materials so earthenware tiles have been used on the floor and old pan tiles on the roof. Reclaimed patterned hydraulic tiles decorate the interior and exterior.
The thick stone walls ensure that the house is kept cool during the summer and maintains the warmth created during the winter from the central heating, two fireplaces and log burning stove.
There are bookshelves stacked with DVDs and interesting books, one dedicated just to Spanish themes. There are two kitchens with dining areas for 6, a dining room for 14, a sitting room , and a games room complete with an American pool table, darts, UK free view TV and sofas.
These all open onto outside courtyards and terraces where there are sofas, cushioned areas ,day beds and dining tables for 14 and for 10.
Table tennis is on the lawn below the covered dining terrace.
The walled garden has an agapanthus lined stone path around the wall´s edge, hammocks and sun beds. it also boasts views across the valley towards Ronda. It is filled with roses, sage and lavender and at its heart an an ancient fig tree underplanted with iris. There are many areas to sit and relax, whether sun or shade is preferred. There are tables and chairs under vine covered corners for reading or dining, sumptuous floor cushions under a pergola and sun beds by the fountain. Beyond the walled garden a path leads to the swimming pool garden.
Here find a lawn, sun beds, shady pergola and mini kitchen.
And just beyond the oleander hedge is the play area with swings, toddler slide climbing frame and badminton net.
From here you can wander into the old orchard filled with apple, quince, plum and pear trees.

About the host

Host profile image
I am a London born painter living in Ronda.

Originally a Cambridge University History/Art History graduate I then chose to train at Rambert Dance School to become a contemporary dancer and choreographer.

Torn discs in my back ultimately brought this ten year era of my life to a close, so with a fervent desire to paint and my husband to write a book, we packed the car and drove to Spain for a six-month adventure.

We hoped to buy and renovate an old house to escape to for holidays.
And after a year, we did find an abandoned walnut and apple farm that was perfect for restoration.

Over the last 15 years we have renovated the house, had two children, developed the garden and restored the land. Formerly two houses, we have maintained the integrity of the building and rent out one half for holiday lets while we live in the other. During the summer the entire property is available as a single rental.
My husband started a newspaper a few years after our arrival , The Olive press, which is now online and distributed throughout Andalucia, and the Balearics. I have renovated a property in Ronda, and converted an old school house into 5 tourist apartments with a garden and pool, called Romantic Ronda apartments.

Why they chose this property

We travelled around Andalucia for a year until we found this area and this property.
Ronda and the surrounding landscape enchanted us, and we had lived deep enough into wilder countryside to realise that we needed to be more easily connected to the coast and cities.
The house was almost the only remaining old property in need of renovation in this much sought after valley.
It had been abandoned for 30 years, the house uninhabitable and the land so overgrown that the stream was entirely hidden.
And yet, there was such charm in its delapidation, in the soft contours of its garden, that we were completely smitten.

What makes this property unique

The house nestles in the valley below Ronda, afforded complete privacy by the landscape, sheltered by fruit trees and yet it is also graced with views of the distant Grazalema mountains.
While being a perfect place to relax and step away from city life,it is still within walking distance from Arriate village and so near to Ronda.
Flowers, nuts, herbs, fruit and vegetables flourish on this fecund land. It certainly does invite you to stop and smell the roses.. which we grow in abundance.
