Bellagio is a municipality that extends for about 29 sq. km at the top of the peninsula in the middle of the Como lake, it is composed of some hamlets: small villages that together make up the municipality that has name“Bellagio“; as cities are divided into neighborhoods, municipalities are divided into hamlets. „San Giovanni di Bellagio“ is an hamlet of Bellagio, and the busy town centre - commonly called simply „Bellagio“ by non-resident- is actually the hamlet „Borgo di Bellagio“. Therefore to call San Giovanni part of Bellagio is not arbitrary but correct. San Giovanni is an ancient fishermen village, is at about 1,5/2km from the most famous and busy center, connected to this by a driveway ( most of it - not all of it - has a sidewalk, and in the last 500 meters it is one-way for cars), but also is connected by small pedestrian streets, often cobblestones and steps, covering them involves more time than the driveway but more pleasant for those who love walking. It is also possible to go from San Giovanni to the center through the splendid gardens of Villa Melzi, paying a daily ticket or a convenient multi-day pass. In the summer months San Giovanni has a regular public navigation service that connects it with the villages of the center of the lake ( Varenna, Menaggio, Tremezzo, Lenno) and with the town center, from 9.30am to 6.30pm. From spring to autumn the main villages of Bellagio are connected by a regular tourist train service. The public bus service operates throughout the year, about every hour, from the morning to the late afternoon there are buses on the line „Como - Bellagio“, crossing from San Giovanni.
