Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world and the second oldest European capital (after Athens), before other modern European capitals for centuries. Júlio César transformed it into a municipality called Felicitas Julia, adding the name Olissipo. Ruled by a series of 5th century Germanic tribes, it was captured by the Moors in the 8th century. In 1147, Afonso Henriques' crusaders regained the city and since then it has been the political, economic and cultural center of Portugal.
