About the host
Hosted by Karen
I'm Karen & worked as a LA teacher before coming on board as an educational diagnostician (assessing children for special needs). I resigned my LA position June 2012, and as of August 2012, I am now teaching a special needs class in nearby MS. My husband, Donald, is a retired security officer from a LA state inmate facility. He and I have owned rental property for the past 25 years and we renovate our own properties. We renovated a house in MS a couple blocks from the Gulf which Katrina claimed in 2005. We looked on the bright side and bought a house in Pigeon Forge 2006: Bear Creek Lodge. We are building back on our lot in Bay St. Louis, MS, so remember us if you are planning a trip to the mountains or to the beach. We are blessed to live on LA/MS line where we can go back & forth for important things: LA: grandchildren and church; MS: beach and school children. The most important things in our lives are God, our children, grandchildren, family and friends.
Why they chose this property
I feel the presence of God daily, but when I take a scenic ride through Smokey Mt. National Park or Cades Cove, I think of how great my God must be that He spoke this existence into place. I've vacationed here for many years and owning a piece of property here was a far-away dream, but God made it a reality in 2006. He gave me a piece of the mountain. We invite you, our family and friends, to visit and enjoy a piece of the treasure with us. We want to share!
What makes this property unique
The real estate agent took us to look at many homes. Some had the great rolling view, but being from LA, the roads to access some of the properties were way too steep and curvy for me. Then, we saw Bear Creek Lodge. It was easily accessible and had a slow ascension--not the steep, curvy roads. Bear Creek Lodge didn't have the rolling view, but the traditional mountain view from the 2 back decks was awesome. It was a breath-taking mountain view looking down the side of the mountain. We could glance the small branch/creek flowing near the bottom and we could hear it, but it wasn't accessible. After purchase, the first thing we did was pay someone to clear enough of the underbrush to make the creek visible. My husband and some help then built over 100 steps leading down to the creek. Today, it's now a traditional mountain scene that one would see on a long mountain hike, but instead of the hike, at Bear Creek Lodge, all one has to do is walk/climb the steps. Guests have shared with me their experiences of walking down the many steps to the creek and countless children have played near the stream.
The inside of the cabin is spacious and offers privacy for families to stay together under 1 roof and still depart on speaking terms: 3 floors with 2 bedrooms and 1 bath on each floor, affording privacy to everyone.
