About this property

Oceana maximises the benefits of its superb position with the enjoyment of tropical living.

Secluded amidst tropical trees and shrubs, including frangipani, bougainvillea, ginger lilies, banana and coconut palms, and approached via a private driveway adjacent to the house, Oceana maximises the benefits of its superb position with the enjoyment of tropical living.

The internal design is stunning, with elegantly curved doors and windows in natural wood reflecting a cloister-like ambience within the coral stone walls. The matching jalousie shutters throughout the house add a further touch of refinement, and provide a cooling sea breeze in the living areas to complement the ceiling fans.

The living room opens out onto the expansive covered terrace through two sets of French windows. Beyond is the large pool deck, the gardens and the azure sea. The picturesque, partially open-air dining room looking out towards the sea is an impressive feature of the house, with its own internal garden and cathedral ceiling. The spectacular black granite dining table on carved coral pedestals is complemented by a matching built-in bar, the perfect place for cocktails as you watch the sun set on the sea.

There are three bedrooms in the main house. The lower bedroom wing has its own hallway and door for additional privacy and quietness. Across the hall is a twin bedroom, where the beds can also be arranged as a king size, with a private patio. At the end of the hallway is the Queen Bedroom Suite, with sitting area, which opens through French windows onto both the pool deck and the covered terrace.

At the top of the stairs you enter the Master Bedroom Suite, with superking size four poster bed and separate dressing room. The en-suite bathroom has a large corner bath tub, a separate shower and twin basins. Running the length of the Master Suite and approached through two sets of French windows is its private veranda, offering truly spectacular westerly views of the Caribbean Sea. The fourth bedroom is in a separate self-contained cottage in the grounds. All bedrooms have air conditioning, ceiling fans, walk-in closets and en-suite bathrooms with marble throughout.

Guests of Oceana at Sugar Hill have the use of all the Sugar Hill amenities. These include a clubhouse with large pool, restaurant, fully-equipped, air-conditioned fitness centre and members lounge, as well as the first class tennis facilities. Sugar Hill is a gated community with security guards both at the gate and on patrol 24 hours a day.

Location

Barbados is a truly phenomenal holiday destination, and geologically unique; a coral island, initially pushed from the sea as two separate land masses by volcanic activity many years ago. Over time these two land masses merged together creating the isle we now know as Barbados. Barbados lies on the boundary of the Caribbean and South American continental plates making it unlike any other Caribbean Island. Within the core of the island, made up mainly of coral sediment, numerous caves and underground lakes can be found. Arguably the most famous of these is Harrison’s Cave; a network of caves, waterfalls, pools and fantastic stalagmites and stalactites.

Descendants of the indigenous Arawakan-speaking tribes tell that the original name for Barbados was ‘Ichirouganaim’ meaning ‘red land with white teeth.’ The reason for the later name Barbados is controversial; some believe that the Portuguese, en route to Brazil, were the first Europeans to come to the island. Others say that it was this Spanish which gave it the Spanish name ‘Los Barbudos’. The word Barbados means ‘bearded ones’ but it is really personal preference as to whether ‘bearded’ refers to the long, hanging routes of the bearded fig-tree (Ficus citrifolia) indigenous to the island; to the allegedly bearded ‘Caribs’ who once inhabited the island; or, more romantically, to the foam spraying over the outlying reefs, giving the impression of a beard.

When visiting Barbados, the first thing you are sure to notice are the gorgeous and renowned flat white sand beaches. On the west coast of Barbados, miles of coral shore beaches and fine white sands stretch along a hypnotising turquoise sea. The West Coast of Barbados is also fringed with countless breath-taking Coral Reefs to provide excellent snorkelling and scuba diving opportunities. The South Coast also offers something for everyone, and is a curious mixture of the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Here you can swim in calm waters, snorkel over the inshore reefs and tidal pools, and at the southernmost tip of the island, you can windsurf.

The East Coast of Barbados has fantastic and lively surfing opportunities, blown briskly by the strong and constant trade winds; the constant breeze of these trade winds give Barbados its mild and pleasant tropical climate. Along the east coast, huge Atlantic waves crash along the shore and so the beaches are better suited for walks and sun-bathing, with a few enchanting places to have a dip in the sea – as the waves break over rocks and reefs, small pools are formed close to shore forming delightful natural swimming pools!

Whilst on Barbados, a taste of the island’s rum is a must! The isle has been producing rum for over 350 years, and it is recognised internationally for its quality. Many tours and taste sessions are available at the local distilleries.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages

If you're looking for a family holiday, Barbados is certainly a destination you should be considering.

If you're travelling with infants, we suggest a trip to Accra Beach. This beach has an artificial bay, that creates a placid wading pool for those who aren't a particularly strong or confident swimmer. Here, little explorer’s will find small fish without having to worry about a tide sweeping them away.

We're a massive fan of Barbados Wildlife Reserve. Not only is the surrounding park spoilt with exotic plants, but you will also find the likes of armadillos, caiman, monkeys, iguanas, an array of birds and tortoises. You'll have to drag the kids away!

Inland Barbados is delightful to explore, enchantingly quiet and rural, there are endless fields of sugar cane dotted with old plantation houses. Barbados has a rich and interesting history and has preserved and restored many of its historic buildings – you can visit a plantation house for a trip back in time, see the towering lighthouses that once led ships and explorer’s safety, or explore the historic towns that are an important part of the island’s past and present.
