About this property
Taisho Aburaya - Large and comfortable house with great garden
This property is decorated in Taisho Roman style, which was created in the 1912 - 1926, only lasting 14 years. It is a harmonious take on Western and Japanese styles that use floral prints, loud colors and western-style furniture. Recently renovated, this house has a new restroom, kitchen and bathroom, including a nice bath.
Description of the house
The ground floor has a living room, large kitchen / dining room, bathroom, toilet, and a beautiful Japanese style garden. The upper floor is equipped with two bright rooms, one with two double beds and the other three futons, so that a group of six can comfortably rest their heads in this home.
Taisho Aburaya originally belonged to a well-known woman named Nakamura Hisako, more commonly known as the Hellen Keller of Japan, an author, craftswoman, and artist.
The neighborhood
This property is located in between the station and the old town, both accessible within ten minutes on foot. Takayama, being a small town, is calm and relaxing but brimming with things to do! You can enjoy a beautiful walk down old town and visit many craft shops, local sake breweries and even see wooden crafts being created. In the morning, you can stroll through the morning market and enjoy tasting many fresh vegetables with a great view of the river. At night, you can go through Dekonaru Yokocho, which is an excellent bar / restaurant road, filled with food booths and even games for small children during certain times of the year, fun for the whole family!

The house overall is spacious, clean, and was comfortable for our group of 2 couples. The location is wakable to pretty much anywhere in Takayama. If you need more than 2 beds, make sure that you're OK sleeping on real futons on a tatami floor. I was comfortable but my husband would have appreciated more cushioning. The location is very quiet - we enjoyed the garden but were careful to be quiet since it is almost surreally silent all around. Two small caveats - there is a washer but no dryer, only drying racks so we ended up taking our laundry to a laundromat that's very close. And if you're hoping to use luggage forwarding you need to be present to accept the delivery, but we were unable to find any 7-11s or Family Marts that would accept luggage to be sent from Takayama.
