The space
The beautiful penthouse apartment is located within Chartwell Court which was formally known as Dollis Hill Research Centre. Before the conversion into apartments the building was used by the GPO (General Post Office) as a scientific facility. The research team led by Tommy Flowers was responsible for developing and building the world's first programmable computer (called Colossus) at Chartwell. It was later moved to Bletchley Park to help the code breakers. Colossus broke the enigma codes which helped bring World War II to an early end.
Also, on the site is Winston Churchills Cabinet reserve war bunker which can be visited up to 4 times a year. On the grounds at Chartwell Court is a charming large natural pond and recreational BBQ seating, etc. Archaeology suggest the pond started life as an early Roman sandpit. 18th Century maps of the area depict the pond (in its current recognisable shape) within agricultural fields, well before Chartwell Court was built in 1933. It is the only remaining link between Urban and Modern Dollis Hill and is of significant cultural and local historical importance.
In short you are staying within a piece of history, hugely important not only to British Culture but also significant globally as this where Colossus (the world's first programable computer) was built and housed. Bill Gates himself acknowledges the site and the technological legacy of those that once worked there.
