About this property

Castle Cottage, Orford

This quaint holiday cottage sits in the heart of the small fishing village of Orford with plenty of activities for guests of all ages - the majestic Medieval castle; picturesque quay offering river cruises or crabbing; award winning Pump Street bakery around the corner in the market square with many other excellent eateries and independent shops.

Castle Cottage is perfect for a small family, couple or friends wishing to get away from the hustle and bustle of every day life for a few days of pe

GROUND FLOOR
You're welcomed directly into the living room with a couple of sofas in front of the fire, a coffee table and some games and books on the shelves.

The kitchen sits at the back of the house and has a wonderful wood burner in it to keep you cosy in winter months. The table and chairs sit in the centre of the room with a dresser to the side and kitchen units running along one wall with Bosch oven and ceramic hob, slimline dishwasher, microwave, kettle and toaster.

A door opens into the courtyard and the lovely modern bathroom is also on the ground floor with a shower cubicle furnished with both hand and rain showers, a WC, wash basin and natural light. Towels are provided.

FIRST FLOOR
There's a door in the kitchen opening onto steep carpeted stairs with handrail, which lead to the first floor where both bedrooms are carpeted too. The main bedroom with king size bed sits at the front of the house, with hangers and a chest of drawers for your clothing. At the back is a second bedroom with attractive day bed which can be made up as a single or twin if you prefer - be sure to ask at check in otherwise it wont be made up. There's also storage here in a chest of drawers.
OUTSIDE
Accessed through the kitchen with an additional path from the road, the little couryard is a suntrap! There's a table and four chairs if you'd like to dine al fresco and a shed with a freezer and washing machine in it for your use. There's also space in the shed for you to store bikes under cover; you can wheel them through the gate and onto the road without going through the house and there are fantastic cycle routes and roads in the region up to Snape or through Tunstall forest.
There's no allocated parking but unrestricted parking near the cottage.

Orford has changed little over the years and is a beautiful spot offering a perfect base for walkers, cyclists, artists or those who wish to wander down to the river to watch the fishing boats go by! It lies within the Suffolk Coasts and Heaths Area of Outstanding Beauty.

The village has an enchanting history, largely having grown since Henry II commissioned the popular Castle to be built in the 12th century. Once upon a time Orford was a bustling commercial and fishing port, however as Orfordness spit continued to grow it became harder for the boats to enter the estuary mouth, just 5 miles from Orford. The quay, whilst still used for smaller fishing craft and river tour boats, was built by the Normans, as was the stunning church in the village centre.

There's also plenty to offer with regards to eating and drinking. It boasts two fabulous pubs, The Jolly Sailor and The Kings Head, as well as some superb restaurants, especially Pinney’s fish restaurant. One of our favourite places to go is to the Pump Street Bakery, which is world famous and offers especially delicious food and drink! There are Tennis Courts and a Recreation Sports Ground with its own Clubhouse and children’s play area. Football is played on the Recreation Ground, which is also the site of the Annual Flower Show in August. Other sports and societies thrive including Bowls, Sailing and Badminton.

The village is 20 miles from Ipswich, 12 miles from both Woodbridge and Aldeburgh, and 5 miles from the famous Snape Maltings complex, popular for its magnificent Concert Hall and nearby Galleries and Shops. Orford and its immediate surrounding area are renowned for culture and good eating

Very disappointing
It could be a beautiful cottage but, it is very 'tired' and could do with a proper clean and a lick of paint! On arrival it smelt musty and very unwelcoming. Overgrown with weeds by the doorstep, cigarette butts in the ashtray, filthy cups that had been put away as clean! A broken sofa which had collapsed in the middle, rubbish and crumbs on the floor, cobwebs in nearly every room, kettle badly scaled up, dirty windows, garden unkempt - I could go on! To top it off, my husband and myself were covered in bites the first morning we were there - possibly flea bites. I did get in touch with the owner and he 'compensated' with a bottle of Prosecco (which neither of us drink) and £58 refund. The crockery etc was so dirty we didn't even eat there. On another point, the listing does state steep stairs - personally I would not be happy with young children or older people staying there.

Orford Castle Cottage
Great location, good pubs and quay. Easy to get to other holiday locations. No parking a bit of an issue.
