About this property

Exclusive Remote Private Island

Be the only guests on an eco-friendly off-grid tropical paradise.

Come stay, chill, and unplug from the outside world for a while!

Situated on the entrance of Dolphin Bay, Jinja Island is surrounded by protective mangroves and fringed its very own coral reef - one of the best preserved in the archipelago.

At night there is incredible bio-luminescence in the waters of Jinja Bay - it sparkles when you swim in it! During the day, you can snorkel the colourful and lively Jinja Island reef.

Although Jinja Island is off-grid, it still boasts some creature comforts. There’s a small house on the island with a hot shower, a flush toilet, AC electricity from solar and USB outlets for charging phones and tablets. You will be provided with clean sheets and towels.

If you stay, you will have the house to yourself, and will pretty much be left to your own devices, but you will not be left alone on the island. The island’s caretaker, Ismael, will take good care of you. He lives on the island in a separate canbaña with his family and will be there for whatever you require (within reason!).

Jinja island is self-catering with everything you need to whip up an island feast for yourself. The kitchen comes with a fridge-freezer, gas cooker, oven, pots, plates and cutlery.

If you don’t fancy cooking, with advanced notice, Ismael’s wife Dormelinda will be happy to make you breakfast, lunch and/or dinner at a set cost using locally-sourced and grown produce.

Guests are welcome to explore the island, snorkel the reef, chill on the boat dock hammocks, swim in the protected bay and/or paddle a cayuco around to Dolphin Bay.

Staying on Jinja Island will be an experience you’ll never forget, and will directly benefit the local indigenous community. I won't be there and Ismael will be your point of contact during your stay.

But be aware that it is this is a tropical island, in the jungles of Central America, with everything that goes with it.

Jinja Island is off-grid. Water and electricity are limited. That being the case, you must be responsible with your water usage and turn off all non-essential electrical items at night.

Host profile image
I'm Graham Hughes, the first person to visit every country in the world without flying. I'm a blogger, vlogger, presenter, writer, filmmaker, website creator and political activist from Liverpool, England. I presented Lonely Planet's The Odyssey for Nat Geo Adventure and was in 2013 the winner of SOS Island, a survivalist gameshow. I've given seven TED Talks, I've appeared on NBC, CBS, CNN, the BBC, ITV, Sky News, Channel 7 and TEN Australia (amongst others) and I'm the founder of Global Scouse Day.

Why they chose this property

I won Jinja Island on the survivalist gameshow "SOS Island", hosted by Les Stroud, at the end of 2013. I moved to Panama in 2014 and lived there for three years and had the time of my life. I had to return to the UK in 2017 to help care for my dad who has advanced dementia. Since then, the property has been looked after by Ismael and his wife who live in the cabana adjacent to the main house. The main house runs off solar power, and we use rain water collection and propane gas for cooking. So grab the bluetooth speaker, put some beers on ice in the cool box and kick back on the boat house hammocks.

What makes this property unique

An entire island to yourself.... what's not to love?! Jinja Island is rustic, remote and, on a good day, paradise on Earth. Jinja Island is located in an area of calm, clear water of the Bocas Lagoon on northeast entrance to Dolphin Bay.

The shore of Jinja Island is fringed by two spectacular tropical reefs and the protective mangroves which surround the island lock tons of carbon down beneath the waves. Jinja Island is a haven for wildlife; attracting hummingbirds, parrots, flycatchers and pelicans.

At night the water glows with bio-luminescence and on a clear, moonless night sparkles with the reflections of a million stars which trace a path from the North Star to the Southern Cross.

The island is just over two acres in size and is totally off-grid. The main house runs off solar power and we have rain water collection. Jinja Island is a truly remarkable place, and if you stay, you will get it pretty much to yourself!
