Cosy 1bed Pet Friendly Garden Apt on the Wild Atlantic Way in South Donegal
A very comfortable, well-equipped and completely separate holiday apartment in quiet seaside location with great beaches and wonderful views of the sea and mountains . "The Snug" is located off the Main Street in Dunkineely, beside shop and 3 nice pubs ( some with entertainment) and is just 10 minutes drive to Donegal town. The location is ideal for exploring Donegal - whatever you fancy. Choices include great walking routes, several sandy beaches, several golf courses, water sports, fishing, island trips, music & dance. You could plan day trips from here to the Cliffs at Sliabh League, Glenveagh National Park, Bundoran Water World, The Giants Causeway. For those who like to cook for themselves the kitchen has everything you would need, or if you prefer to dine out there are many good restaurants to choose from. The place is ideal for pets, with wooden floors / tiles and a huge enclosed garden.

A good spot from which to explore south west Donegal.
Good local walk on St Johns point.
We failed to get the coke stove burning on a cold evening. As a result the Snug was quite cold
My husband and I enjoyed our stay at The Snug. We took advantage of cooking in the kitchen and sitting outside to enjoy the garden view. It's walking distance to a couple of friendly pub's and a great local butcher. St. John's point is a short drive away and well worth it. It can get chilly in The Snug if you choose not to light the stove, so be prepared with slippers and an extra layer. Thank you Sheila!

We loved staying at this apartment and were only sorry not to be there for longer! It has ample space for a couple - there is a bedroom separate from the living room/kitchen - and is very comfortable. The apartment was clean and the owner and caretaker had thought of some nice extra touches, such as leaving us with a fresh pint of milk and some chocolate bars. The kitchen was fully equipped - we couldn't think of anything that was missing. I'd be happy to recommend this apartment to anyone.
We absolutely loved our time at The Snug. We went to Slieve League cliffs one day (beautiful not to be missed!)Donegal town one day and had a delicious meal at the Blueberry Cafe and explored the town and Donegal Castle. We ordered food from TJs takeaway and ate in Mac's pub. ( Edel is an absolute angel) We went to the Marina Cafe in Killybegs 2 times. Everyone was so so friendly!! We loved our little place in Dunkineely....we felt like locals. Everyone knew of it when we shared where we were staying. Sheila was always very quick to respond to any questions.
We had a great stay, lovely lively village with great pubs and characters. Beautiful near by beaches around every corner! Lovely places to eat. Music and great food at Donegal town!
We enjoyed our stay in this cute apartment. Great location. Nice wood or peat burning fireplace but no fuel was left for a first fire. We would stay here again.
Stayed at the snug, it was exactly as described, the only thing that we weren’t informed of was the amount of rabbits that lived behind the snug😄 we had 2 very inquisitive collies that were mad to chase them. Everything about the property was perfect & my partner was delighted with the cleanliness & the location of same, shop 2 doors up & 3 fine pubs 2doors down ( too near 😂). Everything that we could possibly need was in the snug. For sure we will return again. Thank you.

Easy to find and nice to have off street parking. Very comfortable. The only issue I had was with the WiFi but Sheila fixed the issue as soon as I reached out to her. Great hostess.

Good location
We’re able to visit the cliffs near there and a short drive to Donegal

Nice location, poor management
I feel there are 2 aspects of vacation rentals: the building itself and the service provided. Here we had a split response with a very nice space to stay in but little to no service provided in a way that felt like neglect. The garden apartment itself is cozy and clean with a beautiful view out the back when it is clear. The walled area in the back would be great for dogs to run around in. The bed is comfortable. The street noise is surprisingly loud for a building set back from the road, but I wonder if it gets funneled in.
The management here was very disappointing. We stayed right after Christmas when the caretaker was away, which seemed to lead the owner to just decide that we should be on our own. So we arrived at the apartment and it was quite cold. The heat was not on and there was no fire lit. It took 4-5 hours to warm the interior and we had to buy some of our own fuel to keep things warm, which I personally feel should be provided. There were no bath towels out, so we had to hunt for these. The Wifi was on but there was no internet connection the entire time we were there. Having US cell phones with no international calling plan, we had no way to alert our host to this problem and were trying to find Wifi out and about to do so but many places were closed and we were unsuccessful. We finally made the very expensive phone call around 1830 and, while she was apologetic, she later said we let her know too late to do anything about this. I was very disappointed in her overall effort to insure our comfort, which felt like no effort at all. My feeling is that if you are unable to find a replacement caretaker around the holidays and unwilling to service the location yourself, you should not accept a booking at that time. I would definitely not return here.

This most disappointing review was left by an American couple who stayed for two nights 26-28 December 2018. Their visit coincided with a period of exceptionally mild weather and when I could not contact them and they didn't contact me, I assumed that they were lapping up the glorious sunshine and enjoying the festivities in South Donegal which is where I wanted to be!
We have a most reliable caretaker at The Snug, but she did have a family event on 26th December, which is reasonable. She wanted to light the stove at noon, but with a planned arrival time of between 4 & 5 pm, she opted instead to leave complimentary fuel, including an easy to light and fool proof Firelog, and some briquettes. She specifically went to the Snug that day at lunchtime to turn on the storage heaters and cant understand how she didn't do this right since she has done this countless times before. For that we do apologise as we like to provide a warm welcome at all times.
We were not aware that the WIFI was not working, and I made several attempts to contact these guests with no reponse. However , even in Ireland! you are never far from FREE WIFI , certainly in all of the pubs and restaurants that I have been in, in South Donegal. We could easily have gotten a technical expect to call if we were made aware of the WIFI issue at a reasonable time .
When I didn't receive any message from the guests, I rang them multiple times before finally getting a response at 6.30pm on night before departure. They told me about the WIFI but not about any heating issues.
Some points.
1. In twelve years in business, we always supply Firelogs and Complimentary Fuel to get people started with using the stove. The cosiness of the stove is one of the reasons we get so many repeat visitors at The Snug and our other holiday lets. Guests thank us for this and most replace the fuel at departure. This is our ongoing experience with guests staying at each of Sheilasplaces .
2. The storage heaters are new and heat up really quickly. We have often arrived unannounced in cold weather and have been as snug as could be within an hour.
3. A plentiful supply of towels is kept in the hotpress so that they are nice and warm for use - not hard to find.
4. Contact details for both myself and our caretaker are clearly displayed at The Snug. It would be reasonable to expect a message early in the stay about the WIFI issue rather than 6.30pm at Christmas time

Great place to stay!
The Snug was such a great place to stay during my holiday!! A nice bed- and bathroom and a very cosy living room with all the facilities you need. Next to that there are many beautiful things to see nearby. For example some spectacular waterfalls and beaches. Would definitely recommend this place!

Perfect for a couple
Excellent spot for a couple of relaxing days. Particularly well suited to us because it is pet friendly and had a secure garden that the dogs could enjoy as we enjoyed sitting outside on the raised patio area.
Good friendly village location with a well stocked shop a few doors away and a good "chippy" a little further down the street.
Would recommend it.

Perfect dog-friendly apartment
The garden apartment was a great space for a weekend in Donegal with our friendly golden retriever, Finbar. The garden was very secure and he enjoyed sleeping in front of the fire in the evenings. The small apartment was very comfortable with a well-equipped kitchen and safe parking for the car. The staff in the pub next door were happy to allow Finbar to join us and we found everyone in the local shops very friendly. We visited several local beaches and towns and would recommend Rossnowlagh with lunch at the Smugglers Inn. We were pleased to meet Sheila as we were leaving having found the booking process clear and easy with Sheila answering all our queries throughout - we would definitely visit again and would highly recommend this apartment.

Nice place but a little issue with bugs
The apartment was very nice everything you need was in there and a wonderful back yard. Close to the beaches and scenery.
But she needs to give better instructions on how to get to the bottom apt. It's in the very back to the side around the corner of the building.
As for the bugs. I understand that it's a old building but there are obviously cracks in the foundation because within our 2 nights we killed 15 millipedes 6 daddy long legs a Beetle and a earwig. And I'm not a fan of bugs so I was stressing about it the whole time.
Then on our check out day she texted to see how our stay was and we mentioned the bugs and she never wrote back. Still haven't heard from her. Hopefully by next summer everything will be looked after because it is a nice place.

I'm sorry to read your feedback but to the prospective guests I do feel the need to add some comments.
1. There are just 2 apartments at The Snug. Yes both are completely separate with entrances at opposite ends of the property, but let's be clear, you could not get lost between them! In this case the guests were staying at the "GARDEN APARTMENT". Even without having retrieved the email with clear instructions, it would be reasonable to expect that the entrance was somewhere in the vicinity of the garden. In any event, when I spotted the missed call and rang back within 2 minutes, the guests were already in the correct GARDEN Apartment, so this is surely a non issue.
2. In relation to the list of bugs complete with names and headcount, regrettably Cait, our normal caretaker was in hospital at the arrival date and I accept that the bug population may have been allowed to settle in on this occasion. The especially mild weather that we have been having has led to an increase everywhere. If you revisit earlier reviews you will see that they almost invariably comment favorably on the high standard of cleanliness of the place. This is a testament to the great work done by Cait, especially since our properties are pet friendly.
Rest assured that there are no cracks neither in the walls nor the foundation of this lovely old building. The living room opens out into the garden/patio area and guests tend to leave the door open. When people go to Spain they accept that leaving the door open leaves them prey for mosquitoes, in Donegal the bugs are equally enthusiastic about gaining entry but thankfully much less painful. We always do our utmost to remove ( not murder!) any invaders back to the outdoors. We can only presume that previous guests have done the same and just got on with the business of enjoying their stay in this special little place.

Cosy apartment
The Garden Apartment had almost everything we needed for our trip to Donegal, (wi-fi & DVD player excepted)
The bed was very comfortable, and the secure garden was ideal for our dog. I would happily recommend it to others.

HI Christina. Glad you enjoyed your stay.
The TV has a DVD player incorporated. I wish you had asked about that whilst there.
Totally agree that we need to get WIFI.sorted urgently. We have Wi-Fi in all of our other properties just having more trouble getting a suitable package for The Snug..

Perfect spot for exploring the area near Donegal Town
What a special little garden apartment, with all the amenities for a lovely stay. The bed was very comfortable. In this quiet village, there are lovely walks nearby, neighbouring pubs, cafe and convenience store. Everything was supplied to make us feel welcome and 'at home.' We would highly recommend this spot. We were within an easy drive to the Cliffs and the Folk Village, too.
