About this property
Romantic, 17c Listed Stone Cottage In Ancient Oak Woodlands
Once an inn,Tafarn Trip is a listed stone cottage built around 1630 with thick walls, beamed ceilings, a slate floor, a huge inglenook with a bread oven, and a turned stone staircase. Upstairs there are original post and panel partitions and wooden floors with some original irregular floorboards. The cottage is beside a pretty lake with a rowing boat for guests' use and there are miles of woodland walks from the front door. The woods are home to a multitude of wildlife including owls, woodpeckers, pied flycatchers, buzzards, nuthatches, ospreys, rare bats and elusive wild goats. Mountain walks start just a few minutes away in the Moelwyn range. The beginnings of various routes up Snowdon are 30 minutes by car. The huge sandy beach at Harlech, with its castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site; the secluded coves of Borth y Gest; and the fine swimming beach at Criccieth; are a short 20 min drive away. Two pubs, which serve food, are within walking distance (10 min) and shops only 8 mins drive. Fine dining is to be found at Portmeirion (details in our welcome pack).A wild swimming lake is a few minutes walk along forest tracks, a good place to cool off on hot days. There are pretty gardens at Plas Tan y Bwlch, a short walk through the woods. Also at Plas Brondanw, home to Clough Williams-Ellis, near Llanfrothen; and at Portmeirion with its Italianate village designed by Clough Williams-Ellis. Above the lake the Ffestiniog steam railway makes its way, visible from the cottage garden. It is a short walk to Tan y Bwlch station. Catch trains from here to Blaenau Ffestiniog or Porthmadog. From Porthmadog the Welsh Highland steam Railway follows a scenic mountain route to Caernarfon. There is plenty of opportunity for fishing and golf nearby.
The cottage has been carefully restored with attention to period features. The kitchen/dining room is equipped with a fridge including a small freezer, modern gas cooker and microwave. It is furnished with freestanding pine units, an antique marble topped sideboard, a Victorian pine dresser and a table and 5chairs. High chair on request. The lounge is comfortably furnished with 2 two seater sofas .. A window seat and a Georgian pine settle provide further seating. The multi fuel log burner adds to the warm feeling. A parcel of logs is provided and further logs can be purchased locally at additional cost. There is a radio/CD player but no TV or reception for TV; however we do have a TV license. Downstairs there is a walk in shower and toilet next to a utility room. Upstairs are two double bedrooms and a long room with a single bed which connects them and the bathroom. The single bed may be used if we are notified in advance. A cot is available. Bed linen and towels are provided each week. Beach towels are available, on request, at extra cost. Please state when booking.
On the other side of the driveway to our neighbours' houses, is a wildflower meadow leading to the lake. There is an outside storage area for mountain bikes at the back.
Because of the proximity of the lake and the drive, the property is only suitable for children over 10 or babes in arms.
Parking is available on the side of the road opposite.
Central heating and electricity are included in the price as is free WiFi and free telephone calls to UK landlines.
The cottage can sleep a maximum of 4 adults plus a babe in arms and a child over 10.
No pets or smoking, sorry.
