About this property

Nobleman’s Manor House in rural Normandy. Sleeps 14

An impressive ancient house, with lovingly restored stone floors and antique furniture, La Chevalerie is the perfect base from which to explore the French countryside. You can tour country lanes on a bicycle, take a stroll along the vast sandy beaches, or sip an evening drink by the sea at Carteret Beach. This historical house was one of the first to be liberated on D Day and the area is steeped in history, with impressive war monuments and the famous American Cemetery. Foodies and wine lovers can forage in the weekly markets selling everything from Calvados to Spider Crab and local cheeses, to be brought home and prepared in the large kitchen or on the outside barbecue. The house has plenty of rooms to get lost in; read a book in the study or play Billiards in the Great Hall. Children can play in the garden and soak in the oversize paddling pool, while the adults listen to music on the eight seater sofas by the bar. Truly a unique place to get away from it all and relax in style.

Normandy house
Property excellent very well equipped & clean for weeks stay . Contact with owner first class . She left full instructions at the house and important numbers should they be needed. As we had children under 12 to travel to children’s activities was some distance . We all enjoyed Utah and Omaha beaches not far from property. Supermarket close by car . Other villages close but did not find them within walking distance . Would have been even better with a pool of some sort for kids . Gardens very child friendly. A great place to stay and would certainly recommend.👍

About the host

Hosted by Jane Poyntz

Host profile image
La Chevalerie has been in our family now for two generations and I am proud to be taking over the role from my father as host. My friends and our children have watched our children grow here - the house has an atmosphere of conviviality and it is a joy to host large groups of people in such a peaceful setting.

Why they chose this property

It is very rural in this part of Normandy. If you want to that home from home feel and don't want to be a tourist, then this is for you. We love cycling to the local bakery, speaking our best French and touring the local markets. It is a safe and friendly place for adults and children, with loads of local activities to keep everyone happy. Horseriding, canoeing, cycling, tree climbing and wine tasting or touring the battle fields of D Day are all within easy reach and inexpensive.

What makes this property unique

It is a very unique house and as soon as people walk through the doors, they know they have arrived somewhere special. When we have new guests, we tend to let them stay at the property for the first day because it is so relaxing. It is a good blend of old and new, so you can feel the houses "good bones" but also have guaranteed heating that works instantly if it gets a little colder at night.
